If I ever want to dial up summer memories from when I was a kid, I make my grandmas potato salad. I have several potato salad recipes on this blog, but this one with its simple ingredients and simple preparation always tugs at my heartstrings.

Ive shared quite a few of my grandmothers recipes and this potato salad is yet another favorite.

Its an old-fashioned potato salad with a mayonnaise-mustard dressing flavored with pantry seasonings.

We always had it with hard-boiled eggs mixed in and they pair perfectly with the soft red potatoes.

I have to admit my all-time favorite recipe is my loaded potato salad its more amped up but this one, my beloved Gigis salad, will always have a place on our summer dinner table.

How To Make Old

Peel the potatoes and then cut them into bite-sized pieces. Place them in a pot and cover them will water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat and cook them until tender.

Drain the potatoes and let them cool to room temperature. Once cooled, place them in a large bowl.

Cut the hard-boiled eggs into chunks and place them in the bowl with the cooked potatoes.

Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well to combine. Chill the potato salad until youre ready to serve it.

It took us years of twisting her arm to get her to give us this recipe, and even then she spoke so quickly that we had to ask her questions for years after to make sure we were doing it the right way.

My grandma had been making this potato salad for decades before I was ever born. Its creamy and tangy, with a touch of sweet ,and will make you forget about every other side dish at the barbecue.

Family members fight over this at every family get together, and there are NEVER any leftovers . Im not exaggerating, this potato salad recipe is incredible.

If you dont follow the recipe to a tee, its going to turn out differently than hers does, and therefore wont be as good. Im going to give you some basic tips below that you need to follow to make sure it turns out delicious.

How To Make Old Fashioned Potato Salad

BOIL THE POTATOES: First, boil the potatoes until tender.

COMBINE: Next, combine the boiled eggs, sour cream, mayonnaise, onion, pickle, garlic powder, and celery salt. Add the potatoes.

CHILL: Chill the potato salad in the refrigerator for at least two hours or overnight before serving.

    How To Cook Potatoes For Potato Salad

    One of the biggest potato salad controversies is do you cut potatoes before boiling for potato salad? My mom says, no.

    My mom cooks her potatoes whole with the skin on. I follow her lead, or will quarter them before cooking. The other method to cooking the potatoes is peeling and cutting the potatoes before cooking as suggested in the comments below. But, my mom says that method allows the potatoes to absorb more water, and so I do what mama says.

    To cook the potatoes, add them to cold water and bring to a boil and reduce to medium heat, rather than adding the potatoes to hot, boiling water. Boil the potatoes until fork tender and the skin just begins to crack, about 20-25 minutes.

    Another cooking method a reader suggests is steaming the potatoes in 1 inch of water for 30 minutes, which works too. Just be sure to watch you dont boil your water away and burn the pan.

    But first, lets talk about the potatoes. Years ago, I read a post by a well-known food blogger who said you should never use Russet potatoes for potato salad because youll end up with a sad, soggy mess. That was enough for me to keep my mouth shut about how I make mine for years

    Of course, there are a zillion ways to make potato salad, and some recipes use waxy red ones with the peels still on them. They are good recipes, too!

    Well, I DO use Russet potatoes, and heres why. They are a low-moisture, starchy potato and one of the secrets to why this recipe works so well. The Russets happily soak up and hold all the yummy flavors in the dressing.

    My Instant Pot makes this whole process quick and easy. In fact, I have the very best results when I make this salad with still-warm potatoes and eggs. Heres how.

    Start by putting unpeeled Russet potatoes in the Instant Pot. I used eight average-sized potatoes, but since potatoes come in many sizes, put in enough to make a single layer in the bottom of the pot. Add a cup of water.

    Medium-sized whole potatoes take about ten minutes to cook. Dont overcook the potatoes you want them cooked through but not mushy. When they are done, put them aside to cool a bit. I put them in my kitchen sink. Yay! You dont need to wash the pot before moving on to the eggs!

    A creamy, flavorful, Old Fashioned Potato Salad made with potatoes, eggs, mayo, mustard, sweet relish, celery, and spices. Perfect for the upcoming cook-outs, picnics and summer parties. This traditional potato salad reminds me of the one I grew up on.

    When summer approaches here in WV, this is a recipe that I find myself frequently making. This is the perfect side for burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, steaks, chops, and ribs.

    It is cool, full of flavor, and easy to transport to parties. Make this recipe a day ahead of time for the flavors to blend. Bacon, ham chunks, and even chopped up rotissere chicken breast can be added to make it more like a main entree instead of just a side dish.

    I use red skin potatoes or russet potatoes. If you are going to add bacon, the red skin ones really work the best. This is a more colorful potato salad.

    Combine the ingredients for the dressing in a large bowl. Add the potatoes to the dressing and carefully fold to combine all ingredients well. Transfer to a dish with a lid and chill.

    Old Fashioned Potato Salad is the perfect side to serve for Memorial Day and Fourth of July. I am also making it for a graduation party this week.

    This recipe can be doubled for a larger crowd. My husband and I are empty nesters, so I also created a scaled down recipe for this potato salad.

    Recipe Tips For Best Results:

    • Soak the potatoes – If time allows, soak the chopped potatoes in cold water prior to cooking them. This removes a lot of the starch and gives you a creamier, better tasting potato.
    • Cutting the potatoes – It is highly recommended that you cut the potatoes into same sized pieces so that they all cook evenly.
    • Grating the onion – You can use a standard cheese grater or run the onion through the food processor until it resembles a pulp.
    • Mix it up! Like I said above, this is an easy recipe to modify and make your own by changing the quantity and types of ingredients.

    • If the soup is frozen You can simply put the frozen soup in a medium or large sized pot, and heat over low temperature until the soup is thawed. Then reheat on medium temperature it until it has heated through.
    • If the soup is refrigerated Place it in a medium or large sized pot and heat over medium heat, until the soup is heated through.
