How to make Tuna Salad Taste Delicious

Let me show you how easy it is to whip up this yummy lunch! Once you have all of your ingredients out and ready to go, tuna fish salad is as easy as stirring everything together in a large bowl.

Full, printable instructions can be found in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Tuna. Drain the cans or pouches of tuna. And then transfer it into a bowl and use a fork to separate the pieces.
  • Mix-ins. Add the chopped hard boiled egg, diced celery, chopped sweet pickles, diced onion and mix well. These all add great flavor and crunch! You can also add in your own favorite including dill pickles, green onion or even diced cucumber. Feel free to leave out any ingredient you dont like.
  • Dressing. Gently fold in the mayonnaise. Stir in more or less, depending on preference. Add a little salt and pepper to taste and serve cold. If youve got fresh herbs on hand, like parsley sprinkle them in. Also, feel free to get creative and stir in a dash of your favorite spice mix.
  • My favorite way to serve tuna salad sandwiches is on fluffy, buttery croissants, but I also often enjoy this salad mixture with whole wheat bread or crackers.

There Are A Number Of Seasonings That Pair Well With Tuna

Starting off with a few shakes of salt and pepper is great, but Tablespoon says you can go even further with your tuna salad by looking to the spices of your favorite cuisines. For example, evoke the flavors of the warm region of Tuscany, Italy in your salad by adding herbs like thyme and basil along with sliced olives and a dash of lemon juice. The warming spices of Indian cuisine are also delicious when blended into tuna salad. Possible upgrades include adding a bit of spicy curry powder, earthy cumin, or citrusy coriander.

Premixed blends are an easy way to add flavor to this salad, and are especially convenient if you have a limited number of spices in your kitchen. Look for Cajun or Creole seasonings that have a spicy kick from cayenne pepper along with onion and garlic. Old Bay is another seasoning that tastes delicious with your tuna salad. According to All Recipes, the Old Bay blend contains celery seed, pepper, dry mustard, and paprika, and improves the flavor of all kinds of dishes, especially fish and seafood.

“The Flavor Bible” by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg lists even more dried and fresh herbs to try with your tuna salad, showing just how versatile this fish really is. Some of the herbs they suggest include fresh chives, dill, cilantro, parsley, tarragon, and chervil. With any of these herbs, maybe it will finally be the best tuna salad ever!

What’s The Best Tuna To Use

Any can or jar of tuna will work in a sandwich. Just make sure you drain the water or oil before mixing with the ingredients for tuna salad.

I prefer using water-packed tuna in tuna salad, because Im already adding mayonnaise to the recipe. I save oil-packed tuna for dishes where the oil matters a bit more, such as in this Salad Nicoise, because oil-packed tuna is richer than water-packed tuna.

That being said, tuna salad is no time to get pickyjust use what you have on hand.

Why I Love This Deli Tuna Salad

Now, I know tuna salad is a basic dish. Tuna, mayo, maybe some onion or seasonings… no recipe required, right? Okay, yes, you’re right.

But I’m a tuna salad connoisseur. My family used to tease me on vacation because no matter where we went, I ordered tuna sandwiches. At one point, I even made an illustrated chart ranking all the tuna salads I had ordered on our trip. But I digress.

The best tuna salad I’ve ever had, was the one my grandma picked up at the deli counter of the Foodland near her house in Pittsburgh. It was a light, pale pink color, heavy on the mayo almost creamy but without the mayo flavor coming on too strong. It had crunchy bits of carrot and celery throughout, as well as flecks of white and yellow, hard boiled eggs chopped right into the mix.

Over the years, I’ve tried to replicate that tuna salad somewhere, my mom has an index card on which I scrawled “REBECCA’S TUNA SALAD” my very first recorded attempt at making it myself over a decade ago.

But there was always something missing. I’d add paprika, or oregano, maybe toss in some capers or finely dice the onion instead of doing a rough chop. Maybe more salt and less pepper? No, more pepper and less salt? The end result was always kind of close but that x-factor, that thing that brought it all together, remained a mystery.

If it doesnt get eaten up first because it really IS that good, tuna fish salad will keep in the fridge for a few days. Because it has fish and mayonnaise in it, be careful to not leave it out on the counter for too long.

Make that tuna fish sandwich and put the tuna salad back in the fridge in an airtight container to keep it as fresh as possible! The best tuna salad is fresh and safe to eat!

To get started, youll need to drain your tuna. After cutting the lid with a can opener, press the lid against the tuna and tilt the can to drain all the liquid out over a sink. Remove the lid and place the tuna in a medium sized bowl.

Then, add the mayonnaise, celery, red onion, parsley, and dijon mustard to the bowl. Use a fork to mix everything together, while breaking up any large pieces of tuna. Season with salt and pepper to taste and thats it!

    Is Tuna Salad Keto Friendly

Absolutely! There are very few carbs. Even better, there are so many healthy Omega-3 fats in tuna. So it is actually a very healthy, keto-friendly food. Keep in mind that the sweet pickle relish will add some carbs though. If you are trying to keep it completely low-carb, sub the sweet pickle relish with dill pickle relish.

Tips For Making Spicy Tuna Salad

    • Add sesame oil: If you want a bit more flavor in your tuna, consider adding a touch of sesame oil to the mix. I like to use toasted sesame oil and a little goes a long way. It will add some nuttiness and earthiness to the tuna salad.
    • Use avocado: If you dont like mayo, avocado is a great substitute. Just mash it up and use it in place of the mayo. You can also keep the mayo and add some chopped avocado to the mix as well.
    • Sesame seeds and Furikake: If you have ever had tuna poke, one of my favorite things to use on top is Furikake, a Japanese seasoning mix that contains sesame seed, nori, salt, sugar, and a special seasoning. Its delicious and is a really great addition to this spicy tuna salad. Sesame seeds also work to add crunch.
    • Use a different protein: If canned tuna isnt your favorite, you could always use a different protein. This salad works with chicken, salmon, cooked shrimp, tofu, chickpeas, and even hard boiled eggs.

    Tuna Salad: A Simple Pleasure

I have memories as a child sitting atop Mt. Chocorua in New Hampshire with my camp friends after a days climb. Lunch was always oranges and tuna or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And for dessert? Well, lets just say a Hershey bar never tasted so good!

And now, in these times, that sandwich brings just as much pleasure . Spare me the bells and whistles Ill get to them in a minute.

Right now, a classic tuna salad sandwich is all Im after. That means canned tuna, mayo, celery, lemon juice, and if you like, red onion. Period. Slather it on some good bread and Im that happy camper again. In fact, Im taking my sandwich out to the back porch to eat in the sunshine.
