How Do You Carry The Dressing

Regarding the dressing itself, I prefer homemade. But time constraints and laziness more often prevail. I look for something at or below 80 calories per serving. For a quart jar of lettuce, I need about 2-3 oz. The amount varies according to the viscosity of the dressing.

My favorite is the Honey Mustard Great Seasons Brand from Walmart. I have tried many brands of diet Honey Mustard Dressing, and declare this one the winner.

I also like Kens Raspberry Pecan and most any of the diet balsamic vinaigrette dressings. Beware of the extremely low-calorie dressings. I think they taste like flavored water but suit yourself. Im not willing to eat crummy food in the name of saving calories.

Keep add-ons simple. If I ate lunch at home with a large refrigerator at hand, I would be much more creative.

For now, I like to mix toasted almonds with smoked sundried tomatoes or dried cranberries, blueberries, or other dried fruit. Bags of these combinations will keep for weeks in your desk drawer.

Massage Your Salad Greens

Yes, this tip is exactly as it sounds: When using sturdy greens like kale, Swiss chard, and cabbage, go ahead and massage the leave and dressing together with your clean hands. Do this for a minute or two to infuse the flavors of the dressing directly into the vegetables.

Massaging also helps to soften the greens and minimizes any bitter flavors. This trick works for both vinaigrettes and creamy dressings.

25 Easy Fruit Salad Recipes To Add To Your Menu

If possible, keep ingredients in separate containers and assemble once you are ready to eat it. This is a great way to let your family pick what they want on their salads and create a salad bar at home.

I like to prep my ingredients and store them in airtight containers in the refrigerator. If stored properly, many salad ingredients will store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Mason Jar salads are a great option if you want to meal prep and keep your veggies crisp and fresh as long as possible. To make a mason jar salad, layer the ingredients in the order as depicted below:

Why I Love Healthy Tuna Salad Recipe

Just before Marc and I went to Thailand, we took the train to Almaty. It was a long ride. We needed food, but I wanted to be careful not to bring anything that would spoil.

This no mayo tuna salad was the perfect option protein to keep us full and an oil-based dressing to bring the flavor. Plus, it stayed pretty cold in a our makeshift cooler . Were so classy when we take the train.

There really isnt much else to say about this. Its just healthy tuna salad without mayo, which is very similar to my chicken salad without mayo, and its just as delicious.

Choose A Dark Leafy Green Base

For the base of your salad, you want to choose a dark, leafy green such as spinach, kale, swiss chard, collard greens or a combination of any of those or other greens. You can also choose mixed salad greens but I like the heartier greens like kale since they hold up better once they have dressing on.

  • red leaf lettuce

If you plan to eat your salad right away without leftovers, any greens work great though, if you plan to eat it the next day, Id go with something like finely chopped kale or chard.

I used a mixture of spinach and kale for my base.

Nutritional Benefits of Dark, Leafy Greens

Leafy greens are nutrient-dense and one of the healthiest foods you can eat. They are a vital source of antioxidants, fibre and phytonutrients, help prevent disease, and promote healthy digestion, brain and heart health. Leafy, green veggies are rich in vitamins A, C, K and folate and minerals calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium. Theyre also very low in calories so you can go ahead and load up to create low-calorie but filling and nutrient-rich meals.

    Heat Your Salad Dressing

Theres no rule saying that salad dressings must always be cold or at room temperature. If youre making a kale-based salad, for example, a warm dressing can gently wilt some of the greens, which many people find a more satisfying texture to bite into.

Some dressings work much better for this than others. Anything creamy is a no-go. But oil-and- vinegar dressings are ideal for this tip. Warm them on the stovetop in a small pot on low heat. You can also microwave dressing in a microwave-safe bowl: Use a medium power for a few seconds at a time until youve reached the desired temperature.

+ Salad Toppings To Keep Things Interesting

If youre here looking for salad topping ideas, its probably because you want to get out of the boring salad rut. Salads dont have to be a meal you dread but eat in the name of health. They can be nutrient-dense, fulfilling, and balanced.

When putting together a salad, its important to keep in mind high calorie and low calorie salad toppings to balance your bowl. It can be easy to add hundreds of calories and many grams of sugar if youre heavy-handed with dressings and nuts. But, if you can get the ratios right, salads are a flavorful and versatile meal, especially for volume eaters.

  • Assemble the Salad: Combine the macaroni noodles, mayonnaise, celery, green onion and eggs.
  • Refrigerate: For best flavor, cover and refrigerate salad for at least 4 hours before serving, but preferably overnight.
  • Taste Before Serving: The macaroni will absorb the mayonnaise as it chills in the fridge, so you may find it needs a little more mayonnaise. Possibly more salt and pepper.

How To Add Fiber To Your Salad:

Sprinkle ¼ to 1/3 cup of Fiber One in place of croutons. It may seem weird at first but it really is good and adds lots of crunch and fiber. Its also good in place of tortilla strips or fried wonton strips.

Eating salad at home is much more interesting. I may add marinated mushrooms or artichoke hearts, sliced pickled beets, hardboiled eggs, tomatoes, etc. You probably have your own favorites.

Addendum: I no longer eat Fiber One. Not sure why. Probably for the same reason I just up and quit eating Frosted Flakes every morning years ago. Now I add one tablespoon each of chia seeds and flax seeds.

    Dont Forget About Protein

For most people, I recommend getting 15 to 30 grams of protein per meal and having at least three meals a day. If youre adding meat, poultry, or fish to your salad, its a lot easier to meet those protein needs.

If youre looking to keep your salad vegetarian or vegan, you can certainly still hit your protein requirementyou just need to be a little more creative and cognizant of serving sizes. Sorry, but a tablespoon of beans does not equal enough protein. Beans are an excellent protein choice because they are chock full of fiber and other nutrients, but you need at least a half cup of them to come close to getting enough protein with a meal. A tablespoon of lentils, for example, only contains about 1 gram of proteincompare that to a half cup of them, which contains 8 grams.

Thats still typically less than what Id recommend for an entire meal, so your other salad add-ons become even more important: If youre including goodies like nuts or seeds, cheese, grains, and certain veggies like brussels sprouts, asparagus, or broccoli in your salad along with those beans, youll be more likely to get sufficient protein with your whole meal.
