Why Does Salad Give Me Diarrhea? 14 Causes and Solutions You Never Knew

I was pretty close to scheduling an appointment with a gastroenterologist when I happened to speak with a friend’s husband who told me that his wife had stopped eating salads because her body could not handle digesting raw vegetables. Since nothing else was working, I tried giving it a shot.

I had my last salad about six weeks ago. Since then, I try to bring lean proteins, brown rice, and cooked vegetables into work for lunch . I’ve found that by forcing myself to rely on home-cooked meals, I can control portion size and the cooked vegetables are noticeably much easier to digest than my usual fiber-rich salads.

Over the past two months, I’ve felt much better. My bloating issues have diminished substantially and I am no longer embarrassed to wear form-fitting clothing. I feel confident knowing that my appearance won’t drastically change over the course of the day.

Diarrhea After Eating Salad At Restaurant:

The causes of salad diarrhea can be many. Including:

1. Unwashed Vegetables:

Not all restaurants take care of hygiene and cleanliness. So the answer to why does salad give me diarrhea can be the restaurant you visited didnt clean the vegetables properly.

Raw vegetables are filled with different types of bacteria and parasites. If these are not washed properly, bacteria or viruses reach your stomach and cause diarrhea.

3. Stale Vegetables:

The fungus can be another reason for diarrhea after eating salad.

Low-quality or stale vegetables, that are often used by shopkeepers, chefs, and hotel owners can cause diarrhea after eating salad at restaurant.

4. Sensitivity to Ingredients:

Restaurant owners add various spices and ingredients to their dishes and salads to enhance the taste and grab more customers.

Can I Have Lettuce Intolerance

Why Does Sauerkraut Give You Diarrhea?

While its pretty rare, it is possible to have a lettuce intolerance. However, rather than an immediate allergy to lettuce, you might instead have a delayed lettuce hypersensitivity, which is, essentially, a reaction caused by your immune systems reaction to a food. This causes distress and often some pretty severe symptoms, including rash, itchiness, and stomach pains.

When this hypersensitivity occurs, the immune system produces specific antibodies that fight off the allergens found in your food. This causes the release of histamine and other naturally-occurring chemicals, which then cause inflammation and the discomfort you feel after eating lettuce.

But This Summer I Learned That Salad Unfortunately Just May Be My Bodys Enemy

I usually buy lunch every day and, up until a few months ago, my go-to choice was usually one of those build-your-own salad places, where Id load up on kale, avocado, and other raw veggies, topped with an olive oil dressing.

But in the beginning of 2017, I began to notice a strange pattern of bloating.

It started when I was sitting at my desk at work and I realized that my pants did not fit. It felt like I had just finished a Thanksgiving meal: I was fatigued, felt extremely full, and had a full-on muffin top. The kicker? I had only eaten a healthy, protein-rich breakfast and a salad that day. Luckily, I was wearing a long shirt which allowed me to discretely unbutton my pants.

The next day, the same thing happened. This time, I was wearing a loose top and only felt comfortable after I unbuttoned and unzipped my pants.

Some days I would feel like myself, but most of the time it looked like my abdomen had ballooned to almost twice its normal size. Even though I rarely over-ate and worked out regularly, I was never happy with how I looked or felt.

It is important to realize that there are many different reasons people get diarrhea after eating a salad, so it is important to do a more in-depth search on the internet. But Im Amazed By The Guilt That Seems To Drive My Patients To Force Down Foods That Make Them Feel Digestively Awful Because They Feel They Should

Theres something amiss in our wellness culture when people feel so guilty about the fact that eating a bagel may feel infinitely better than eating a giant kale salad that they wind up in a clinicians office essentially seeking permission to stop eating the kale salad.

I attribute this largely to a public dialogue about food and health that has appropriated such virtuosic language that its easy to see how feeling bloated, gassy, and miserable after eating a kale salad could seem like a moral failing to someone on a quest for better health. If kale salads are part of a clean diet and wheat flour is deemed toxic or inflammatory, then its not hard to imagine the impulse to seek a dispensation from a doctor or dietitian to eat a so-called bad food that feelswell, good.

The increasingly narrow portrayal of whats healthy as defined by fad diet books or social media influencers is often at odds with the wide variety of dietary patterns that actual scientific research tells us are healthy. And it can really do a number on your emotional wellbeing.
