Read their inspiring mission statement:

Our founders created the first commercially viable seaweed farm in the United States in 2009, with the goal of diversifying how our coastal waters are used and providing a domestic, fresh, healthy alternative to imported seaweed products.

Now, more than ever, we need food sources that can positively impact the economic and environmental health of our coastal communities. Here in Maine, climate change is already making landfall, and our future depends on finding new ways for lobster fishermen to work on the water while improving the health of our oceans.

CEO Briana Warner works with fisherman all over the state of Maine to gather kelp for Atlantic Sea Farms. We identify, and work with, fishermen throughout the coast of Maine to help them start their own kelp farms. We provide technical assistance to help these farmers get farm leases, set up their gear, learn how to seed and harvest, and support their business planning. We also provide free seeds to all of our farmers. These folks are the soul of our business and we are proud to introduce you to them.

Tide To Table Profiles: Atlantic Sea Farms

Atlantic Sea Farms is a maker of seaweed specialty products located in Saco, Maine.

In the chilly waters of the Gulf of Maine, Atlantic Sea Farms works with a close community of Maine lobstermen. They grow and harvest skinny kelp and sugar kelp and processes that kelp into culinary products. Through their program Kelp to the Kitchen: Bringing Seaweed and Chefs Together, they also partner with industry personnel to educate others on the culinary uses of seaweed.

Atlantic Sea Farms supports their community of kelp farmers by providing free kelp seeds with a buy-back guarantee that they will purchase the fully raised seaweed at harvest. Additionally, Atlantic Sea Farms team provides training, auditing, and support services throughout the season, and assists with farm siting. As a result, the number of Maine kelp farmers has boomed. In just 2 years, Atlantic Sea Farms partner farmers have come to represent more than 80 percent of cultivated seaweed in the United States.

Atlantic Sea Farms is working to make kelp aquaculture a profitable and viable long-term diversification strategy for working waterfront communities. According to the seaweed company, Maine lobstermen already possess the boats and on the water skills required for growing high quality kelp. Fermented Seaweed Is Cheeses Unexpected New Friend

Close your eyes and think about kelp. Whats the first thing that comes to mind? Maybe its a tray of fresh sushi, a too-bright green bowl of seaweed salad from your local Asian restaurant, or an episode of SpongeBob. But seaweeds global market value has been increasing dramatically, and Atlantic Sea Farms CEO Briana Warner wants to challenge Americans preconceptions about eating kelp.

When she took over the Maine-based company in 2018, Warner had a clear goal. We shifted our mission to be focused around working with lobster fishermen to diversify their incomeboth to adapt to and mitigate some of the effects of climate change, she says. Scientists have discovered that the Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99 percent of oceans worldwide, placing the future of its lobster population and dependent fishermen in doubt. With kelp, Warner saw an opportunity: By providing local lobstermen with free kelp seed , not only would the local economy improve, but so would the waters. Planting seaweed actually reduces carbon and nitrogen levels in the oceans, offering a safer environment for wildlife.

A Focus On Sustainability

Recently, Warner has pivoted the company to also include helping farmers diversify into kelp to help counter climate change. Growing kelp locally provides a domestic, fresh, healthy alternative to imported seaweed products. It also helps the environmentkelp farming requires no arable land, pesticides, or herbicides and helps reduce ocean acidification effects around farms.

The timing of kelp farming is also convenient for growers. Seaweed is grown in the winter, which is the off-season for lobster. Warner notes that more than 4,000 lobstermen on the coast of Maine can potentially use this crop as an added source of income. Today, Atlantic Sea Farms has 24 partner farmers along the coast, most of whom are lobstermen or fishermen diversifying their income.

Seaweed And Greens Salad

In this hearty side salad that blends sea greens and land greens, fresh salad greens, carrots, radishes, and cucumber get a boost of salinity and texture from three different types of nutritious and delicious seaweeds: kelp, dulse, and Irish moss. The trio of mineral-forward sea vegetables is nicely balanced by rice vinegar dressing. Dulse, a red seaweed that commonly grows in the Northeastern Atlantic and around the UK, and Irish moss, which has a frilly, bushy shape, can be purchased at seaveg.com. Sustainably farmed kelp from Maine can be purchased at atlanticseafarms.com.
