In searching for ways to remove oil stains, I remember I read somewhere that you can revive old oil by adding a little more oil.

I tried vegetable oil and olive oil, and the only thing I accomplished was making the oil stain worse. It got larger and more apparent.

A neighbor recommended I try WD-40 to remove oil stains. She said she used it all the time.

WD-40 might be a tad extreme, but since we already WASHED and DRIED these oil stains on high heat, what do we have to lose?

What To Know Before You Clean

Oil-based stains go beyond cooking oil. “Mayonnaise, deodorant, motor oil, and cooking oil are all examples of oil-based stains,” says Stapf, so you can treat them all in the same way.

Depending on the size and severity of the stain, you may need to repeat the removal process. Here are a few things to remember:

Act quickly. Once you notice an oil stain on your clothes, ideally you want to act immediately. A set-in oil stain is much harder to remove than a fresh one. Plus, grease stains darken as they set, making them even more noticeable over time.
Check the garment’s care label. Generally, you should use warm-hot water to treat oil-based stains, but if you’re dealing with a special fabric, double-check for any specific instructions.
Don’t rub the stain. When removing any excess oil, the key is to blot, not rub, says Stapf. “If you rub the stain before blotting, it could push it further into the fabric and make the stain harder to remove.”

Salad Dressing Stain Removal From Clothing And Other Washable Fabric

Step 1: Scrape off any excess salad dressing from the fabric, being careful not to spread it further.

Step 2: Run the fabric, inside out, under the cold water to flush out as much of the dressing as possible, if it is a cream based dressing.

Step 3a: If this a cream based dressing follow subsection a of Step 3. Pretreat the creamy stain with liquid laundry detergent containing enzymes, soaking for 30 minutes in cold water, or in the alternative pretreat with an enzyme pretreater. Do not use hot water. .

Step 3b: If this is a vinegar and oil based dressing follow subsection b of Step 3. Rub a small amount of hand dishwashing soap into the fabric. Then, rinse the stained area well, flushing away the dishwashing liquid solution and oil from the vinaigrette dressing.

Step 4: Pretreat with a laundry stain remover.

Step 5: Launder in the hottest water allowed for the fabric to thoroughly remove the stain, using either chlorine bleach if the fabric will allow it, or color safe bleach if not.

Hint: Make sure the stain is gone after washing, but before you place in the dryer or you may set it. Repeat if necessary.

S To Remove The Salad Dressing Stain:

As soon as you notice the stain, blot the mark with cornstarch or baby powder. This will start to absorb the oils in the dressing that can lead to those nasty stains.

Wipe excess powder from the stain with a napkin. Repeat the blotting if necessary.

Once youve removed as much of the stain as possible, pre-treat with a laundry stain remover or a liquid laundry detergent. Enzyme products, such as Kids N Pets stain remover or Biz detergent, tend to work well.

Wash in the hottest water recommended for the fabric with your regular laundry detergent. The hot water along with the detergent will break down the oils in the dressing and remove the stain.

After the wash cycle, check to see if the stain is gone. If its still there, repeat stain removal attempts BEFORE you dry the clothing.
