Fresh Fruit Salad with Honey Poppy Seed Dressing — Lynn’s Recipes
  • Prep Ahead I think this is one of those recipes that tastes nice after a couple of hours. Prep ahead 2-3 hours beforehand, refrigerate, and mix occasionally for the fruit salad to develop.
  • Store Store leftovers in an airtight container the fridge for up to 24 hours. It is best if you remove as much air as possible so probably easiest with a ziptop bag.
  • Freeze I dont recommend freezing this recipe.

Winter Fruit Salad Recipe

Normally I always think of fruit salads as a summer side dish but theres still a lot of fruit in season during winter so why not take advantage of that and make a winter fruit salad?

Plus Ive had Thanksgiving in mind and the fact that its usually a lot of not so healthy foods so I thought it would be a good idea to throw some fruit in there this year to help balance it out a little.

You know, feeling okay about eating that 800 calorie slice of of pie loaded up with whipped cream because I did eat all of my fruit salad first :).

Just like any fruit salad this is so easy to make and it adds so much gorgeous natural color to your table.

How To Make Easy Winter Fruit Salad

Tips For Making The Perfect Fruit Salad

  • This fruit salad is a great base for any additions you like. When it comes to fruit you can use anything you have on hand. Some fruit I like is raspberries, strawberries, blackberries grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, bananas, oranges or papaya.
  • For the softer fruits like the berries or bananas if you choose to add those, you will want to add them when you are ready to serve it.
  • The dressing is a great final flavoring for the salad. If you are bringing this salad to a get together I suggest waiting to add the dressing until you get there.
  • If you have leftovers of this fruit salad it goes great over Greek yogurt for breakfast, in oatmeal or add it to a smoothie.

How Do I Cut A Pineapple

Arent sure how to cut a pineapple? I dont blame you. Those pokey fruits can be a beast. Pineapple cutters seem like a great idea, but pineapples come in all sorts of sizes and their cores are of varying thickness so it doesnt always work in practice.

Lay the pineapple on its side on a large cutting board. Cut about 1/2 inch off the top and bottom .

Stand the pineapple upright. Use a sharp knife to slice that unruly, pokey skin off the sides in slices. Try to leave as much of the flesh intact as possible, but remove all that nasty skin.

The core of the pineapple is usually hard and inedible. Feel around one end of the pineapple to see where that hardness begins. I usually use a dull butter knife to make a little indentation to outline the core. If you are cubing your pineapple simply cut large chunks off, leaving the hard core behind, then slice and dice into cubes. If you are creating rings, youll cut slices and remove the core out of each individually.

Ill often add a can of well-drained mandarin oranges in a pinch, and if Im using blueberries, I mix them in very gently to avoid turning the whole salad blue.

This salad is great to bring along to potlucks and backyard barbecues, and its well received by kids and adults alike.

In fact, one of the easiest ways to get my kids to eat their fruits and vegetables is to whip up a fruit salad. We make this one all the time, and they always go back for seconds.

The salad doesnt keep well though, so I recommend adding the dressing just before serving and enjoying it all in one sitting. Trust me, it wont be hard!

Fruit Salad with Orange Poppy Seed Dressing
  • Yes! The fruit salad is best if assembled and allowed to chill 30 minutes in the refrigerator after you add the dressing then served within 2 hours.
  • You can certainly assemble and refrigerate the salad longer than two hours in advance but the longer it sits, the more the dressing will macerate/soften the berries still delicious, just not peak freshness.
  • You can prep the fruit salad up to days in advance but not fully assemble by chopping the fruit and preparing the dressing .

How To Make Fruit Salad Ahead Of Time

Fruit Salad with Honey Poppy Seed Dressing
  • The most time consuming part of a fruit salad is chopping the fruit BUT this can be done whenever you have time. With the exception of the bananas, you can chop all of your fruit a couple days in advance and store them in airtight containers in the refrigerator. You can also peel and segment your oranges and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
  • You can whisk your Honey Citrus Poppy Seed Dressing ingredients together in a separate bowl and refrigerate separately. When ready to serve, let your dressing sit at room temperature for 15 minutes or so its pourable. Drain any excess liquid from the fruit, add Dressing and evenly toss with fruit.
  • The fruit salad is best if allowed to chill at least 30 minutes after you add the dressing and served within 2 hours but it is still delicious if allowed to chill longer.

Tips For Fruit Salad Leftovers

  • If storing leftovers of this fruit salad, remove the bananas and store the rest of the salad in an airtight container. I like to add freshly sliced bananas to my new servings of fruit salad.

I serve it with a wonderful homemade dressing called Maple Poppy Seed Dressing or a vegan salad dressing found here. Its so hearty its wonderful as a main dish. But its also good served with homemade bread, or as a side for your favorite soup or main dish recipe.

Nowadays you can get all these fruits pretty much year round. It makes eating this delicious salad a lot easier than in the days where you could only eat salad in the summer or fall after harvest.

Spinach and Fruit Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing is so much more than just spinach and strawberries! Actually, its a take off on Panera Breads Strawberry & Chicken Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing and another recipe called Winter Fruit Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing.

While I usually make it with spinach, any kind of lettuce or greens will work. To make this salad vegan simply eliminate the cheese. To make as a main dish add grilled chicken or steak.

This is a marvelous salad to serve for your family or company dinners. You also ensure they get plenty of healthy veggies and fruits in their diets. I highly recommend adding Spinach and Fruit Salad with Poppy Seed Dressing to your repertoire.

Its healthy, low calorie, gluten free, and has spectacular taste. Our family loves this salad. Its one of the few salads that I can eat almost every day and not grow tired of it! You can switch around the lettuce, nuts, cheese and dried fruits on occasion to add more variety. Every way works ! Enjoy.

Heres what I did.

Ingredients In Summer Fruit Salad With Honey Lime Poppyseed Dressing

  • Strawberries
  • Honey

Other additions to this may include things like plums, nectarines, apricots, mangoes and blackberries. If adding other fruits use the same amounts as directed in the recipe, so you have enough dressing.

Cut your fruit up however you desire. You can slice the peaches or cut them into chunks like I did here. I halved the grapes and the cherries, too. The strawberries I cut into quarters.

Place all of the fruit in a big bowl and top with the dressing.

I added a little extra lime zest to the top of my salad, and stirred it right in before I served it. I refrigerated the salad for about an hour before we ate it. Not a necessary step. Just personal preference.

What Are The Ingredients Of A Fruit Salad

This easy fruit salad is perfect in its simplicity. In this fruit salad, I have combined:

  • pineapple
  • blueberries
  • bananas

I chose these fruits because of they create a beautiful symphony of flavors, textures and shapes and the perfect fruit salad in my opinion. The key to the best fruit salad is to use ingredients that wont turn brown or get mushy or release too much moisture .

If you dont like any of the aforementioned fruits, are allergic, or simply want to use what you have on hand, then to free to swap some of them out. I dont suggest omitting the pineapple, however, because it is both wonderfully juicy and sweet. If you cant get a hold of fresh pineapple, then use canned packed in its juice not in heavy syrup OR swap it for mangos for their juicy sweetness.
