Is A Salad Spinner Necessary

Oxo Stainless Steel Salad Spinner – Longer Lasting, Less Plastic (Review)

A salad spinner is not a necessity, but it does make meal prep a lot easierand not just for greens. You can wash and dry a multitude of lettuces and other greens, like kale or collards, but you can also efficiently wash and dry fresh herbs, berries, and bulky vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes. You can even wash and dry your hand-wash-only laundry. Its an efficient way to complete the task, but you may want a separate spinner.

Best Steel: Oxo Steel Salad Spinner

  • Doubles as a serving bowl

  • Must dry after use to avoid rusting

  • Cant see greens unless colander is removed

If youre looking for a salad spinner thats efficient, but also modern and attractive, the Oxo Steel model is a great choice. It has the elements expected from Oxos trusted brand, plus a sleek design that looks as good on the table serving your freshly spun salad as it does on the counter as a tool. The 4.95-quart basket capacity is ample to clean and dry at least one head of lettuce or two for smaller types, like radicchio or red leaf.

The patented pump-action plunger makes one-handed operation easy, and the built-in brake mechanism skids your spinning to a halt quickly. When finished, the plunger neatly locks into position, making for easier storage. The bowl is made of food-safe stainless steel and the cover is acrylic, so you wont be able to see your food spinning other than through the top. This model has a base coated in non-slip material that keeps the spinner stable during operation, but youre are not limited to spinning with this model. It easily doubles as a sturdy colander, even with hot pasta or steamed vegetables, and because of its gorgeous design, it begs to be used as a serving bowl on your table.

Generally Faster Is Better

Salad spinners are like little centrifuges. As a salad spinners perforated basket spins, youre observing several types of force in action. The water on the lettuce experiences centrifugal, or center fleeing, force. As the lettuce travels in a circle, the water continues to go in a straight line, escaping through the sides of the basket and leaving dry lettuce behind. The walls of the basket provide centripetal forcethe force that keeps the lettuce moving in a circle around the center of the spinner.

Centripetal force is measured using the following equation: Force = mass * velocity^2 / radius.

Amount of Time Taken to Dry Percentage of Water that Remained
Zyliss Swift Dry
35 seconds 13.59%

And if youre thinking: will a too-fast salad spinner damage fragile herbs or, say, berries? In theory, it could. However, none of our favorite salad spinners bruised the cilantro. Theres also always the option of lining your salad spinners basket with paper towels to act as a buffer when drying more fragile foods.

Serious Eats / Madeline Muzzi

When it came to how they generated velocity, the salad spinners fell into two broad categories: well refer to them as free-spinning or fixed rotational.

How Do You Use A Salad Spinner

OXO Large Stainless Steel Salad Spinner

The answer to this will depend on the type of spinner you purchase, but as far as basics go, prepare your ingredients by chopping up vegetables, greens, fruits, or whatever you plan to wash and dry in the spinner. Place those ingredients in the basket and run cold water over the basket to thoroughly flush the dirt and debris. Place the basket in the work bowl and affix the lid. Start spinning via crank, plunge, pull-cord, or twist-knob, depending on your style of spinner. Stop once you see water in the bottom of the bowl with dirt or debris in it. Remove your ingredients and move to the next one.

The Spruce Eats / Vicky Wasick

The humble salad spinner may seem like an unnecessary kitchen tool, but we beg to differ: It’s revolutionary when it comes to yielding crispy, fresh greens. The centrifugal force created by spinning draws the liquid from spinach, arugula, and more, warding off lingering moisture that might make your salad soggy or even moldy and pulling out dirt particles hidden in ribs and crevices.

Our tester chose the Oxo Good Grips Salad Spinner as our winner because it’s durable, intuitive, and versatile basically, it’s everything you might wish a salad spinner to be. For another near-perfect product, wash mint, cilantro, and other small produce items with the compact Oxo Good Grips Little Salad & Herb Spinner.

To help you find the best salad spinner for your kitchen, we tested them side-by-side and evaluated each on its ease of use, design, size, ease of cleaning, and overall value. Lots of salad greens, fruits, and vegetables were washed and spun to make sure these salad spinners are truly the best.

Here are the best salad spinners, according to our tests.

Straight To The Point

Our favorite salad spinner is the OXO Good Grips Glass Salad Spinner. It dries lettuce efficiently and is easy to use . For a more inexpensiveas well as lightweightpick, we recommend the Zyliss Swift Dry Salad Spinner, which is a longtime Serious Eats favorite.

Most of us will only ever use a salad spinner for one task: drying lettuce. However, dry lettuce is important.

This is because salad dressings are oil-based and, as you probably know, oil and water dont mix. If theres water left on your salad greens, the dressing wont adhere to the leaves and will instead collect at the bottom of the bowl. A good salad spinner is the most efficient way to remove a lot of water quickly.

We last tested salad spinners in 2016, where we named the Zyliss Swift Dry Salad Spinner our favorite. Since then, notable brands have come out with new models. That, coupled with the fact its been six years since we last reviewed them, meant it was time to retest salad spinners.

So, we put 10 models through the paces, starting out with a small wish list. Our ideal spinner could handle enough lettuce to make a large salad to serve four or more and we didnt want to have to take out a small loan to buy it . We focused on models priced from $20 to $65, with a stated capacity of five quarts or more.

Spinning Mechanism:Brake Mechanism:REASONS TO BUY

The OXO Good Grips Little Salad and Herb spinner brings the same high-quality design of the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner but in a much smaller package. The larger model has a 4.95-quart capacity basket, while this version’s basket only has a 2.44-quart capacity. Besides the obvious reduction in volume, what this really translates to is a much smaller storage footprintwhich in a world full of kitchen gadgets is a huge plus. If you are a single person or don’t find yourself washing large quantities of greens all at once, we found this device’s size ideal for our salad and greens consumption. As with the other OXO Good Grips spinner, this device has a comfortable and easy-to-operate push button and a highly effective brake that takes minimal effort to engage. Spinning off both water and dirt with ease, this OXO model left us with few complaints.

One of the few design flaws we found with this little spinner was a sticky storage latch. To make storage even easier, you can depress the push button and lock the button flush with the top. While this is a handy function, we found that the latch would occasionally get stuck and would need to be fiddled with to release. If you are looking for a high-quality option that won’t take up large amounts of precious storage space, look no further.

Oxo Good Grips Stainless Steel 5 Quarts: Our Top Pick

OXO Salad Spinner Stainless Steel Review

OXO makes some great kitchenware gadgets that really go the extra step in user-friendly design and quality components. And the OXO Steel Salad Spinner is a good example of just that, as our favorite model for heavy, daily use.

The patented pump mechanism gives easy, one-handed operation with a large plunger made of a soft, non-slip polymer. A few pumps with your palm easily engages the gears and quickly expels excess water. Then it neatly locks into the down position for a smaller storage profile.

OXO Steel Salad Spinner,

The brake mechanism is patented as well. A push of the large, soft button stops the basket on a dime, shaking off the last few drops of water and fluffing the greens from the fast stop.

A clear acrylic lid allows you to watch the action. And heres a feature we really love: the two lid sections easily come apart for cleaning unlike most models on the market.

And if youve ever dropped a clear acrylic bowl onto a tile floor only to watch it crack or shatter, youll love this large stainless steel bowl! Made of food-grade stainless steel, its lightweight but sturdy, has a non-slip base that keeps it stable, it wont break when dropped, and it also makes a handsome serving bowl.

The slotted sieve is made of BPA-free plastic and is sturdy enough to be used as a colander as well even with hot foods like pasta or steamed veggies, it wont warp or lose its shape.

How We Picked And Tested

People use their salad spinners to wash and/or dry all sorts of things: lettuce, berries, spinach, herbs, bathing suits , so its important that a salad spinner be easy to use. Spinners come with either a handle at the top, a pump, or a string to turn the inside basket. That mechanism should work smoothly and shouldnt require too much effort, or your arm may get sore. We found pull-cord-based models, like the Zyliss Easy Spin, to be lacking. User reviews are consistently low and our own editorial teams experience with this style convinced us that the cords are ultimately too fussy to use and, more important, hard to keep clean. Our experts agreed with us. I do not like the ones with the pull string, says Jennifer Chandler. I feel like its waiting for something to break. Georgeanne Brennan agrees, saying, I do like the crank and not the cord. With that decided, we kept to pump-action models, like the Good Grips, and handle-based models where you manually spin the bowl with a crank, ratchet, or rack-and-pinion system.

For our original guide, we soaked and spun one 10-ounce bag of adult spinach in each spinner six times. We weighed the spinach dry, after soaking, after three spins, and after six. Additionally, we washed and spun a pint of raspberries, checking for any bruising, as well as a bundle of dill to see which spinner baskets were most difficult to clean. Wobbliness and ease of use were also evaluated.

Analysis And Test Results

Our lead tester identified five categories of importance to contrast performance and features between the ten spinners. The five metrics used were water removal, dirt removal, ease of spinning, ease of braking, and ease of cleaning. These factors helped to create a holistic appraisal and understanding of each product.

The Best Overall Salad Spinner: Oxo Good Grips Glass Salad Spinner

OXO SteeL Large Salad Spinner 1 ct

This newer offering from OXO was among the top performers in all of our tests. It dried lettuce efficiently, handled delicate herbs without bruising them, and was able to fit 10 ounces of mixed greens without compacting them. The spinners design, versatility, and stability put it ahead of the pack. On first impression, its bowl felt too heavy . During use, though, this weight provided an advantage and kept the salad spinner from wobbling. The glass base also doubled as a nice serving bowl.

Q: How Do Salad Spinners Work

A: Nearly all salad spinners share the same basic construction: a basket set inside a larger bowl, topped with a lid that houses a spinning mechanism that is powered by either a cord, crank, or pump that uses centrifugal force to spin the basket, sending the residual water on the leaves out while holding the greens in.

Our Pick: Oxo Good Grips

After two rounds of tests over two years, the OXO Good Grips is still the best salad spinner weve found. Its pump mechanism is easier to use than other models, spinning steadily but not too forcefully. The shape of its bowl, wide base, and nonslip ringed bottom make it sturdy. It has one of the best brake mechanisms weve found, and a clear bowl and basket leave an easy view to see whether the greens are truly clean. Storing the Good Grips is a snap, because it has a flat lid and retractable pump. Its well-designed inner basket and two-part lid were also among the easiest to clean of the eight models we tested.

The Good Grips uses a pump mechanism: You just press down on a large button in the middle of the top and the machine does all the spinning for you, making it the easiest to use. We preferred this effortless, steady speed to the crank spinners on the Culina and Starfrit, as well as ratchet spinners like the one on the Kuhn Rikon, which require quite a bit of exertion to get the basket up to any sort of speed. Also, crank models need two handsone for spinning and one for making sure your spinner doesnt fly off the counter. Terry Hope Romero also likes the OXO for its pump. I love that doesnt have that stupid string, she said. If that breaks, then what do you do? This setup is a lot less likely to break.

The Good Grips also has a wide, flat base with a circular rubber ring that helps make it more stable than any model we tried.

The Best Inexpensive Salad Spinner: Zyliss Swift Dry Salad Spinner

What we liked: The Zyliss Swift Dry was the winner of our 2016 testing and remained a favorite. This powerful model featured a pedal-powered spin mechanism that was intuitive and easy to use, generating a lot of force without much effort. Of all of the salad spinners we tested, this was the fastest. It dried five ounces of mixed greens in just 30 seconds. It also had silicone bumpers on its base that provided stability, a brake button, and a handle that locked flat for storage.

What we didnt like: This salad spinner had more going on under the lid than its competitors. The pedal-style pump operated two plastic gears, which rotated to spin the basket. The lid itself featured a detachable plate designed for easy cleaning. However, this plate was looser then wed like and can separate from the lid if bumped. Some customer reviews reported this spinners gears stripping over time.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

Review Of OXO Large Steel Salad Bowl Spinner SKU 14171908. News Years Resolution Eat Healthier!

There are very few flaws. The only consistent flaw in other editorial reviews is that its not particularly easy to store. Its a large salad spinnerits colander has a 5-quart capacity, and the bowl has a 6-quart capacityand the lid isnt completely flat, but its the only model we looked at that has a locking pump, making it the easiest to stack overall. But thats a small drawback were willing to deal with in light of its many, many excellent features.

We do wish it spun a little quicker, but as we learned in testing, it still does a great job drying greens and its more restrained RPM means its great at drying other things, too.

Last, its push mechanism does take up some room in the bowl, and we wish it could be allocated to whatever you want to put inside. But considering the machines large size, its not really necessarythe Good Grips is still very, very roomy.
