But ya know what? We can still be barbecue superstars! I promise! Ive absolutely got you covered â and no matter how much time you have, youve got options!
So no matter how much time you actually end up with, youll still show up at the party with something terrific!
A Red White And Blue Layered Fruit Salad
This is just that Base Model Fruit Salad above, with a little upgrade package. It honestly requires hardly any extra time at all!
There are two main tricks to success here:
⢠A Clear Bowl â To really get the wow factor pumped up, you truly do need a clear glass bowl or even a footed trifle bowl. You want people to see all that patriotic fruitiness! I got my glass salad bowl ages ago , but its similar to this one, and I use it for lots and lots of things beyond fruit salads.
⢠The Right Fruit â You need to have the same amount of each color of fruit, so each of those pretty stripes is roughly the same size. Remember how I mentioned that white fruits can be tough to come by, especially for Memorial Day, at the kick-off of patriotic foods season? If you couldnt come up with much in the way of white fruit, for example, then you might need to stick with our Base Model fruit salad because with that one, you can get away with just tossing a few banana slices in at the last minute and theres still enough white for people to get the whole red-white-and-blue vibe you were shooting for.
My son and I quickly tossed something like this together last Fourth of July, and when we stood back and saw how pretty it was we snapped some pics , and immediately knew wed be sharing the idea with all of you.
Almost a year later, with the 4th just a couple weeks away nows the time!

What Are Salad Plates
While they’re not defined by an official size, most salad plates range in diameter from 4 to 9 inches and are smaller than their accompanying dinner plates. They’re the ideal size and shape for a delicate serving of tossed greens, colorful chopped vegetables and crunchy nuts and seeds topped with a light homemade vinaigrette. Don’t forget a for garnishing the dish with your cheese of choice. When for a formal gathering, place each dish to the left of the dinner plates and above the forks. If you’re using , the dish should sit at the upper left corner of the cloth and should not touch it. Additionally, be sure to consider opting for square salad plates. Their modern look elevates the dining table.
Choosing Fruits For Your Red White And Blue Fruit Salad
RED FRUITS
Red is so easy! Think of all the options
- Watermelon
- Cherries
WHITE FRUITS
White is waaaaay less easy, except at the real peak of summer when youre more likely to be able to get your hands on white melons like golden honeydew or white crenshaw. Those are a prized find!
In a pinch, you can usually get regular, green-ish honeydew to look more or less like white . Thats generally going to be your safest bet, a fruit you can always count on finding at the store.
Bananas are, of course, very white but they also very quickly turn mushy and brown. So, you usually only want to use those if youre assembling your fruit salad at the last minute, or if you can just layer a few bananas on top right before serving.
Apples and pears are white if you peel them, but I just dont think they feel summer-y enough to wheedle their way into my summer fruit salads . And besides, just like bananas, apples and pears both have their own issues with turning brown.
So, in terms of white summery fruit, youve basically got:
- White melons
- White peaches, if you can find them and have time to peel them
BLUE FRUITS
Blue â were back to easy! Particularly since theres a berry with the word blue in its name. Slam dunk. All you really need are:
- Blueberries
- Blackberries

I dont really know what a Christmas salad is. But I do know that a festive looking salad when I see one anything thats red, green and white! This is a great salad for making a ahead because blanched vegetables stay wonderfully crisp in the fridge.

What makes a salad a Christmas salad, anyway?? I didnt know the answer to that and I wasnt going to google it! So I took matters into my own hands and made up a salad with classic Christmas colours red, green and white.
Yes you can make it ahead! Actually, its perfect for making ahead because the greens are beans, snow peas and asparagus which I blanched the night before then stored in the fridge overnight. They stayed lovely and fresh. I made the dressing and kept that in the fridge too. Then to serve, I just added the dried cranberries and crumbled over feta .
OK, Im signing off now. Keeping this sweet and short because.well, to be honest, Im writing up my 7 course Christmas Special and Im running out of steam!! And I figure salad is not where I should be investing my energy .

The Red White And Blue Fruit Bouquet Centerpiece
This is how you ratchet alllllll the way up to full-on fruit salad magnificence. When you show up at the party with this, it says, You guys are awesome friends and I went all-out for you.
Its not hard. Truly â not hard at all! It just takes some extra time.
Use the same strategy as I outlined in #4 above, placing a small vase or drinking glass at the center of your serving bowl. But, instead of creating a display of purchased party decorations at the center, youre gonna make fruit kabobs!
Were basically just using the same concept we introduced waaaaaaay back in one of our first blog posts, when we detailed how to make fruit bouquets and fruit kabobs.
The only things you really have to know are:
⢠Choose the very bottom piece of fruit carefully â you want it to be sturdy enough that it can help support all the other fruit above it and doesnt lose its shape and go sliding down your skewer. Red grapes, for example, tend to work much better than chunks of melon.
⢠Snap some of your skewers a bit shorter than others, so your fruit bouquet has skewers of varying heights.

Easy Fruit Salad Centerpiece
This is so much more than just a fruit salad. This is a centerpiece, a showstopper. This is WOW.
And its seriously soooooo easy! Heres what you do:
Before you pile fruit in your serving bowl, place a small vase or drinking glass in the center.
Then, add your fruit all around the vase.
Grab some festive patriotic decorations, and arrange them artfully in the vase.
One little tip here: Id recommend NOT using decorations coated in glitter. Festive â yes. Great for eating â no. I learned this little gem of wisdom the hard way, after I photographed this salad for you, and found my beautiful fruit salad was sprinkled with not-so-edible glitter. Facepalm. Shouldve been obvious, right?!?

Easy Stress Free Seven Course Christmas Menu
You can read about this menu here, including a step by step of the order in which I prepared, baked, reheated and plated up each dish. I made all these dishes for a Christmas Party with my friends and these are photos of the actual dishes that I took to the party. Im sharing this in the hope that it might inspire your Christmas menu!
Why Use Small Plates
Separate the fresh, raw greens from the cooked protein, vegetables and carbohydrates of the main course by giving it its own serveware. When serving the salad before or after dinner, separate table settings are recommended. Salad plates aren’t just for your leafy greenswhile they can be used in conjunction with appetizer, dessert and bread plates, they can also be used in place of them. Anything served in smaller portions is appropriate to be placed on them, as it’s harder to make a large look hearty and full with portion-controlled serving sizes. The beauty of dinnerware like salad plates is that they’re so easily switched in and out, and no dish has to be used for only one type of food. Personally, I almost never mix a dressing into my fruit salads. Summer fruits are just so gorgeous on their own, and theyre so bursting with their own natural sugars that I feel like they dont necessarily need anything more.
But, I do sometimes like to offer a fruit dip / fruit salad dressing on the side â in case other partygoers want to get a little reckless and crazy.
If youd like to offer a fruit salad dressing as a side option, I definitely, definitely recommend our Healthy Sugared-Vanilla Yogurt Fruit Dip.
