First of all, make sure you have at least one oven-safe bowl that you can prepare your homemade baked tortilla bowls in! The bowl is crucial to getting your taco salad bowl to hold its shape, so look on the bottom of the bowl or on the packaging to be sure it says oven-safe somewhere.

Then, if you can, I recommend choosing a fairly deeper bowl than average. Because, with a deeper bowl, your baked tortilla bowl will have more room for your fixins! So, Id aim for around a 1-quart to 1½-quart size bowl.

Finally, its important to choose a tortilla thats large enough to fit your bowl. I recommend using tortillas that are at least 8-10 inches across! Then, be sure to push your tortilla down to the bottom of your bowl so its as flush as possible, and gently fold creases along the edges to fit the shape of the bowl.

Sturdier tortillas will work best, but just be patient if you have some trouble with the tortilla tearing on the first few attempts! Once youve got your raw taco salad bowl ready, just pop the bowl into the oven and bakeno oil needed!

My Love Affair With The Taco Salad

I have long been a fan of taco salads. Ever since the days of old where I started my first job at Wendys when I wasnt even 15. I used to love their taco salads. Now, they didnt have an edible taco salad bowl like this, but they were still so good, I actually posted a copy cat recipe here on my blog. Step 1. Preheat the oven to 375F.

Step 2. Find the items to use as the tortilla bowl molds.

Here are the options:

  • Empty metal food cans
  • Mason glass jars
  • Tin foil

The easiest thing to use as a mold is tin foil 🙂 What you need to do is take a large sheet of tin foil and crumble it into a ball!

Next, smoosh it on the table on both sides to make a flatter bottom and a flatter top . Put the taco mold on the baking sheet.

Step 3. Microwave the tortillas for 30 seconds so they are warm and pliable

Step 4. Brush The Tortillas With Oil

Lightly brush the tortillas with olive oil on both sides.

Step 5. Prick the tortillas several times with a fork

This is done so the tortilla doesnt puff up when baking.

Step 6. Drape the tortillas over the taco molds

Put the tortilla on top of the foil ball and press the tortilla sides down to drape them. This is going to be the tortilla shell bowl

Step 7. Bake for 10 minutes

Remove from the oven when the tortilla is brown and crisp.

Step 8: Flip the tortilla bowls over and take out the molds.

Voila! Heres your amazing baked tortilla bowl made from scratch!

    Holy Moly! It seems like Christmas was just a few weeks away now here it is almost May already. Where does the time go! In a salute to cinco de mayo this is a recipe for a beef taco salad in tortilla bowls.

    Taco salad is a Texas-Mexican-inspired dish that was very popular in the late 1960s era and continues to this day. But it is not just for a cinco de mayo holiday as it can be enjoyed any time of the year. The tortilla bowls are pretty easy to make but I did have to experiment with different size bowls until I got it the shape I wanted. I found that the oven temperature was the best at 350°F for 20 minutes for a nice crisp bowl.

    The first time I ever tasted a taco salad I was 26 years old. That experience has been on-going as it has turned into my love for the taco salad. It is a salad that adapts well to many flavors and can be spicy or mild and with whatever is on hand in the refrigerator, cupboards and freezer. Chicken, fish, shrimp, they are all doable and delicious.

  • Brush a thin layer of canola or vegetable oil on both sides of 8 flour tortillas.
  • Place a 4 ramekin or similar size oven-safe bowl, face down, on a cookie sheet. Lay a tortilla over it.
  • Place a piece of heavy-duty aluminum foil on top of the tortilla and press down, scrunching the foil and tortilla around the ramekin until its shaped like a tortilla bowl . Now flip the whole assemblage so its open end up. Repeat for however many tortilla bowls youre going to need .
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees and bake for 5 minutes. Take cookie sheet out of oven, use tongs to carefully remove each ramekin and then return the tray to the oven to cook for 5 more minutes.
  • Remove from oven, carefully lift each shell out of the foil and place bottom up, foil down on the cookie sheet. Gently secure the rim of the tortilla inside the foil so it doesnt burn.
