Is Deviled Ham Spread The Same Thing As Ham Salad

Ham salad and deviled ham are very very similar some would say they are the one and the sameit kind of depends on where you are from.

Both deviled ham spread and ham salad are made of very similar ingredients a mayonnaise-based dressing with relish and ground ham, served on crackers on cocktail buns.

How To Make It

This Ham Salad recipe is so simple to make in about 2 minutes flat with the help of a food processor or powerful blender.

  • Place the ham and pickles in the food processor or blender. Pulse to chop.
  • Transfer the ham mixture to a large bowl.
  • Add the mayonnaise, mustard, parsley, chopped scallions, onion, salt and pepper.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Serve as a Ham Salad Sandwich or a ham salad spread with crackers.

    How To Make My Old

First, chop up your ham into cubes.

Youll want to do the same for your boiled eggs too.

Place your cooked ham in a mixing bowl.

    Add the mayo.

See how easy this is already?

    Then the pickle relish.

    Add in your mustard.

Dont stress if you dont have this exact type of mustard. Just use what you have on hand and roll with it. Some of the best recipes came about by folks using what they had on hand.

Finally, season with black pepper to taste.

Here we go. Ready to stir!

It doesnt look too pretty right now but hang in there with me.

After you have everything all stirred up, add in your chopped boiled eggs.

Stir gently. Your ham salad spread is now ready! This recipe makes about three cups of delectable ham salad.

You can refrigerate it for a while to allow the flavors to blend well or you can just eat it right now.

Guess which one Im gonna do?

    Optional Ingredients For Baloney Salad

There are a few delicious options that folks also enjoy in bologna salad if they have them on hand.

    • Diced Celery adds crunch, texture and additional flavor. Celery is also popular in many salad recipes.
    • Diced Onion adds flavor and texture.
    • Cheese a lot of folks enjoy their bologna salad with cheese. Grated cheddar cheese or American cheese are popular options.
    • Peppers for added flavor, crunch and texture. Diced sweet green pepper, diced jalapenos, diced banana peppers and drained diced pimento peppers are all great options.
    • Boiled Eggs diced hard boiled eggs make the salad heartier and add texture. We seem to like putting boiled eggs in lots of things here in the South. You can add diced boiled egg, with or without egg yolks, to suit your taste.
    • Yellow Mustard its a popular addition for many to add about a tablespoon or so of mustard to their baloney salad recipe.

If you like to add anything else to your baloney salad, leave me a comment and let me know what you like to add.

Even with the optional ingredients you still end up with a simple ingredient list that you can find at your local grocery store or Walmart.

    What Is In Ham Salad

Ham salad ingredients are very simple. Here is what you need:

    • Ham: This can be a fully cooked leftover ham or even use ham steaks for the base.
    • Mayo: I prefer traditional mayo or even avocado mayo for a healthier alternative. Some of the older recipes your parents and grandparents grew up on may have included miracle whip as well.
    • Dijon Mustard: I like just a little to add a little zing to the recipe and it pairs so well with the ham.
    • Sweet Pickle Relish: I love sweet relish in this because it provides both sweetness and a little acidity from the pickle juice. It also naturally pairs well with the beautiful balance of salty ham. If you want a lower carb or sugar free option, sub with chopped dill pickles or dill pickle relish.

This salad already is salty naturally from the ham, but you can also season it with a little black pepper too if desired.

    How To Make Ham Salad

  • Place ham slices and brown sugar in a pot with enough water to cover the ham. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Remove the ham from the water and let it cool to room temperature.
  • Place the ham, red onion, gherkin pickles, pickle juice, and mayonnaise in a food processor. Pulse several times. Taste, and season with salt and pepper.

    • I use mayo and sour cream instead of just mayo. Personally, I think the jarred stuff is nasty, so I cut it with sour cream. The result is a less sweet version with a bit of tang. In this dish, its a perfect match.
    • I use dill vs sweet pickle relish in this recipe. I think we get enough sweet the dill is delicious. Try it!
    • You can pop the pickle into the food processor to chop, but I love the lovely larger bits of dill pickle, so I chop it by hand.
    • You can also use store-bought dill pickle relish if you dont want to chop it.
    • Add enough sour cream and mayo until its as creamy as youd like it to be!

How To Make Ham Salad Spread

    Ingredients

    • Salt and pepper

    Equipment Required

Large food processor or High Speed Blender We love our large 12 cup capacity Hamilton Beach Food Processor. It is the perfect size to get the ham processed into minced meat. However, you can also use a high speed blender like the Ace Instant Pot Blender or if you make a lot of blender recipes, a Vitamix Blender is a good choice.

Large Mixing Bowl or Storage Container You will need to store the Ham Salad Spread in a large mixing bowl or plastic container. You can also freeze some in a freezer safe container if you prefer.

Silicone Spatula I cant express how much I love my silicone spatulas. It makes cleaning out the food processor a breeze! And if you use a blender, be sure to use a skinny silicone spatula that will make clean up a breeze!

    Instructions

In order to make ham salad spread first decide if you want to use a food processor or high powered blender.

Then add the ham, egg, onion, celery and sweet pickle relish to the bowl and pulse 15-20 times to mince the ham. Be sure to use that silicone spatula to scrape down the sides as necessary.

Do not allow the blender or food processor to go on low or high speed. You want to slowly pulse the mixture so that it turns into small crumbles and not pureed.

Once the mixture is ground into mince meat, add it to a mixing bowl or storage container. Then stir in the mayonnaise and mustard until well incorporated.

How To Store Deviled Ham Salad Recipe

This tasty salad will keep in the fridge, tightly covered, for up to a week.

You can freeze leftover ham but I wouldnt freeze this salad. Instead, freeze your ham and then thaw it when youre ready to make the salad.

Frozen and thawed ham tends to give off some water so be sure to drain it well before using thawed ham.

How long does ham salad last?

It has dairy and mayonnaise in it, so it shouldnt be left at room temperature for more than 3-4 hours. Otherwise, itll keep for up to about a week in the fridge. Keep it tightly wrapped.

Is old-fashioned ham salad the same as deviled ham?

They are similar but not quite the same. Deviled ham tends to have a few more ingredients in it, and there are huge variations in the recipes. This deli ham salad recipe is simpler and has fewer variations.

    Is old-fashioned ham salad healthy?

Ham is lean and theres relatively little sour cream and mayonnaise in it. Use low fat mayo and sour cream if you want to keep the fat down. So, its a great low-fat choice. Ham, however, is high in sodium so you might want to look at those numbers if youre watching your daily sodium.

How many calories are in ham salad?

In this old-fashioned ham salad recipe made with full-fat mayonnaise and sour cream, there are about 230 calories per generous 1/2 cup serving.
