The Illinois-based company voluntarily recalled two products: 8.2-ounce packs of Bumble Bee Lunch on the Run Chicken Salad Complete Lunch Kits with an August 2011 best-by date and 3.5-ounce Bumble Bee Chicken Salad with Crackers Ready-to-Eat kits with a best-by date of February 2012, according to the Bumble Bee website. The products were sold across the country.

There have been no reports of injury and there is a remote chance of serious health effects, according to the Department of Agriculture.

The products were shipped to distributors and stores in August, so if youve still got any sitting on your shelves, call the company at 507-7828 for a refund.

The recall does not affect tuna, salmon and other seafood products, according to the company.

When Cooperman read the letters and numbers on the can, a company spokesperson told him when it had been packed, but wouldnt decipher the code.

Tim Belanger, spokesman for Bumble Bee, said that for competitive reason the firm doesnt divulge its can codes. Some information gleaned from the codes wed prefer to keep confidential, he said, such as how much tuna the company packs at a certain plant, or in a given time. Nevertheless, Bumble Bee has never really considered putting consumer-friendly use by dates on its cans, Belanger said, because the shelf life of the product is up to five years.

This is not to suggest that you hoard tuna for the year 2000. But the episode does bring up the issue of the freshness of processed foods.
