My favorite tuna is Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value brand Skipjack Wild Tuna in water, which is labeled as pole and line caught one at a time. Not only is this tuna responsibly caught, the tuna tastes like its higher quality and it seems like you get more tuna per 5 ounce can than other brands. I also love that the only ingredients are skipjack tuna and water.

The Best Canned Tuna For Tuna Salad

To make the best tuna salad sandwich, it helps to start with high-quality canned tuna. We prefer tuna that is packed in extra virgin olive oil, because the oil intensifies the flavor of the tuna.

Both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have excellent canned tuna packed in olive oil that work perfectly for this tuna salad. The brands we most often use are Wild Planet Albacore Solid Wild Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil.

If you don’t like the oil that the tuna is packed in, you can always drain it, and add back a tablespoon or so of your own high quality extra virgin olive oil.

What Can I Mix With Tuna Instead Of Mayo

For making a tuna salad without mayonnaise, there are a few different options depending on your dietary needs. The most common substitute is using Greek yogurt. Personally, I dont like using all Greek yogurt because it gets too tangy. Instead, I use a combination of Greek yogurt and mayonnaise. You could use a combination of Greek yogurt and sour cream as well if you dont want to use mayo.

Another dairy-free option is to swap in mashed avocado for the mayo. Make sure to season the avocado with salt and pepper to make sure it has plenty of flavor. You could also use vegan mayo for a dairy free option.

How To Make Tuna Salad Without Celery Or Eggs

Tuna salad is one of the easiest salads to make and it can come together in a flash. Much like in my chicken salad recipe, this one obviously doesnt use celery or any ingredients like eggs.

In fact, the only things that are in this tuna salad are canned tuna, onion, red pepper, dill, mayo and a bit of whole grain mustard, a splash of vinegar and a few dashes of tabasco sauce. All thats required is to mix it all up and then enjoy right away or save for later!

So, to begin with, we need to prep your tuna. I recommend simply using canned tuna in brine. For tuna salad, the brined tuna is all thats needed as the ones packed in olive oil tend to a) be more expensive and b) be pretty flavourful on their own so they dont typically need to be a part of a dish like tuna salad. Save the oil-packed kind for something like a salad Nicoise.

Open the cans and then drain the brine from the tuna by pressing down on the lid over the tuna flakes and pouring it into the sink. Then add it all to a large mixing bowel

Next, you need to add half of a finely diced onion. Any kind of onion will do I call for a yellow onion in the recipe because that is what I typically have on hand at home but a red onion or a white onion will also work great here.

You can even sub in a finely diced shallot or some sliced green onions. Anything you have on hand will do this recipe is great to riff on and you dont need to follow it to the absolute letter!

    What Makes It Vegetarian

    While the dish may be called “tuna salad,” there is actually no tuna involved in the recipe. Its all made up of your favorite vegetarian alternative: chickpeas! Chickpeas provide great protein and fiber options for those who dont eat meat . According to Healthline, there are actually 14.5 grams of protein and 12.5 grams of fiber in one cup of cooked chickpeas, which is a lot for a little legume. Jawad said the chickpeas have a really great texture that mimics tuna and when you mash the chickpeas into a chunky consistency and mix them with similar ingredients, it resembles tuna salads texture.

    The salad also calls for all the regular ingredients you would have in your typical tuna salad. The celery and shallots give it that bite and crunch you normally get, as well as a nice and light tahini lemon dressing that combines everything together really well. While it may seem weird to you at first, dont knock chickpeas instead of tuna ’til you try it.

    First Let’s Talk Tuna

    When I was a kid, tuna came in cans sold by a small number of very big companies, and it was inexpensive. Today, those cans remain, but they’re joined by much pricier options, some imported and some domestic, some in jars and some in cans or tins, almost all packed in olive oil. The quality of some of these fancier tuna products is significantly higher than that of the mass-market stuff, but I wanted to find out just how important the difference is in tuna salad.

    I bought just about every brand I could find of oil-packed tuna, along with a couple of water-packed samples, then whipped up tuna salad using each kind.

    Here’s the good news: For a classic mayo-dressed tuna salad, it really doesn’t matter what kind of tuna you use, since the quality differences are entirely covered up by the mayo and seasonings. Oil-packed gives you a slight texture advantage, but even water-packed works.
