Tuna salad can be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to a week. And of course, sandwiches are just one of many dishes you can make with tuna salad.

Mix in some macaroni for an easy pasta salad side dish, or pack it into avocado halves or scooped-out tomatoes for a gluten-free lunch. A few spoonfuls of tuna salad with crackers is also one of my favorite afternoon snacks.

There is a simple reason for this: it’s easy. All you need is a can opener, mayonnaise, two slices of bread, and voila! You have yourself a tuna fish sandwich.

Let’s consider the creation of this phenomenon for a moment. Until the 20th century, most Americans had absolutely no idea what tuna even was, as companies focused mainly on catching and packing sardines. However, after a poor sardine catch in 1903, certain California fishermen began to go after fish thriving in abundance off the West Coast. One such fish was the albacore tuna. Its mild flavor earned favor with everyday Americans, and albacore soon became a regular part of the national diet .

That still begs the question: How exactly did the tuna salad sandwich, as we know it today, come into being? The answer lies in the 19th century. American women, who had until then been in charge of the home, and, therefore, the food, were beginning to enter society at large. Their needs, coupled with the familiarity of recipes inspired by their kitchens, gave rise to the tuna salad sandwich.

Tuna salad is so easy and requires very little prep.

  • Drainflaked tuna and place it into a medium bowl. Use a fork to gently separate the pieces.

    If youd like to cut some of the calories, replace some of the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt. It will have a slightly more tangy flavor but still, just as tasty!

    Sometimes you just want a really good, old-school tuna salad. This is my go-to recipe. I start by draining the tuna well so its not watery this is important! then I add a generous scoop of mayonnaise and lots of seasoning. From there, I stir in a spoonful of pickle relish for tangy sweetness, celery for crunch, and scallions for onion flavor. Finally, I add a squeeze of lemon juice and fresh parsley to brighten the whole thing up. The result is a classic tuna salad thats fresh, flavorful, and easy to make. Its the only tuna salad recipe youll ever need.

    This is something we always did in the pizzeria and how I was raised. Rinsing it helped get rid of the liquids it was packed in.

    The most critical thing is making sure the liquid is pressed out with it. If not, youll end up with watery tuna fish after a day or two in the fridge.

    When Im yearning for a little something extra or looking for a late-night snack, I make a Grilled Tuna and Cheese Sandwich with the Sweet & Spicy flavor of StarKist Tuna Creations. Its the perfect sandwich when I want something savory yet sweet.

    I dont know about you guys, but Ive been in kind of a lunchtime rut lately. My daily routine is basically get up, get some work done, workout before lunch, make a quick green smoothie for lunch, and then work some more until its time to call it quits for the day.

    This week I decided its time to break the cycle, so I threw together this super simple Mediterranean chickpea tuna salad, and now Im kicking myself for staying stuck for so long! With just 5 ingredients, it could NOT be any easier to make. And you mayo haters , youll be thrilled to hear that this is a tuna salad WITHOUT mayo.

    How To Make This Recipe

    Let me show you how easy it is to whip up this yummy lunch! Once you have all of your ingredients out and ready to go, tuna fish salad is as easy as stirring everything together in a large bowl.

  • Tuna. Drain the cans or pouches of tuna. And then transfer it into a bowl and use a fork to separate the pieces.
  • Mix-ins. Add the chopped hard boiled egg, diced celery, chopped sweet pickles, diced onion and mix well. These all add great flavor and crunch! You can also add in your own favorite including dill pickles, green onion or even diced cucumber. Feel free to leave out any ingredient you dont like.
  • Dressing. Gently fold in the mayonnaise. Stir in more or less, depending on preference. Add a little salt and pepper to taste and serve cold. If youve got fresh herbs on hand, like parsley sprinkle them in. Also, feel free to get creative and stir in a dash of your favorite spice mix.
  • My favorite way to serve tuna salad sandwiches is on fluffy, buttery croissants, but I also often enjoy this salad mixture with whole wheat bread or crackers.
