How To Make Tuna Salad Without Mayo
I have a confession I despise mayonnaise!
I never liked it growing up and its one of the few foods I still cannot tolerate as an adult. So I would often make tuna salad with mustard instead of mayo and it was fine! But eventually that got old, so I had to start thinking outside of the box. I love my Mexican Tuna but was craving something different!
If you have ever had canned tuna, you know it can be a bit of a strong flavor, but it pairs really well with citrus and other Mediterranean flavors. So using a lemon based dressing instead of mayo is the perfect way to switch up your usual tuna salad.
I am always looking for ways to add in more veggies, so instead of just the usual chopped celery and onion, I decided to add in lots of Mediterranean veggies right into the tuna salad for texture, crunch and to make it more filling!

Avocado & Tomato Salad
Don’t confuse this with guacthere’s way more depth of flavor, which makes it one of our favorite summer sides of all time. But the real beauty? You’re totally welcome to eat it with chips.
Swap out the veggies
If you have extra veggies in the fridge that need to be used, you can totally switch up this salad. Replace the cucumber with some sautéed zucchini or add in some chopped grilled asparagus. Replace the jalapeño with bell peppers for a milder, sweeter crunch or give it more of a Mediterranean vibe with oregano instead of cumin and some feta!
What can I serve with this?
Since this avocado salad is simple and straight forward, it basically goes with everything. Serve it along with some baked salmon, grilled chicken, or keep it all veg with a portobello burger!
How long does this keep?
Avocados love to go brown on us quickly, so this dish is best served straightaway. The lemon will help prolong the browning, but only for so long. Any leftovers can be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a day.
If you really need to get a head start, you can toss everything together except for the avocado and store in the refrigerator up to a day, then add the avocado right when ready to serve.

What Youll Need To Make Summer Avocado Salad
Be sure to choose perfectly ripe avocados for the salad. A ripe avocado should yield to pressure when gently squeezed with the palm of your hand. If your avocados ripen before youre ready to use them, pop them in the fridge this will significantly slow down the ripening process. If you need to speed up the ripening process, place the avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana and fold the bag shut. Let the fruits sit together overnight on the counter and the avocados will ripen quickly.
Tips For Making This Recipe:
- Wondering how to tell if an avocado is ripe? Just hold it in your palm and squeeze gently. Ready to eat avocados will be firm but yield slightly to gentle pressure. Dont squeeze it with your fingers though that can cause bruises.
- Because this is such a simple salad, presentation means a lot. So try and cut all your ingredients to be roughly the same size.
- Soak the red onion slice in a little water, for a couple of minutes, before mincing. This will remove some of the raw onion taste.
- Avocado does not refrigerate well. So if you are not eating it right away, wait to add the avocado until just before serving.

Avocados Add Morewow To Any Dish
Another great way to incorporate avocados in salads is to add them to pasta salads! When preparing salads for meals or as a vegetarian option at a dinner party, avocados can make pasta salad more substantial. Their rich texture moistens quinoa or bow tie pasta salads as well as adds good fats and nutrients to help make you feel satisfied but not guilty.
Can I Make This In Advance
I like to make this tomato avocado salad an hour or two in advance, so the flavors have time to set in. However, I do not recommend making this more than several hours in advance. The lime juice does help slow the browning of the avocado a bit, but avocado will brown fairly quickly, making it a much less appealing side. If you need to save a little bit of time, you could combine the other ingredients and then add the avocado just before serving.

How To Cut Avocado For Salad
For avocado salad, I think the avocado looks best if sliced into either strips or large dice. Since the avocado will break down slightly as its tossed with the other ingredients, you want large chunks for easy eating.
To cut an avocado, slice in half then remove the pit. I do this by firmly placing my knife into the pit and then turning it slightly so that it gives to release. From there, I slice the avocado right in its shell, then use a spoon to remove the avocado from the skin. This tip works really well if the avocado is ripe, but not overly ripe.
