How To Make Tuna Salad Without Mayo

I have a confession I despise mayonnaise!

I never liked it growing up and its one of the few foods I still cannot tolerate as an adult. So I would often make tuna salad with mustard instead of mayo and it was fine! But eventually that got old, so I had to start thinking outside of the box. I love my Mexican Tuna but was craving something different!

If you have ever had canned tuna, you know it can be a bit of a strong flavor, but it pairs really well with citrus and other Mediterranean flavors. So using a lemon based dressing instead of mayo is the perfect way to switch up your usual tuna salad.

I am always looking for ways to add in more veggies, so instead of just the usual chopped celery and onion, I decided to add in lots of Mediterranean veggies right into the tuna salad for texture, crunch and to make it more filling!

How To Cut An Avocado

Avocados are one of the BEST ingredients to add richness and creaminess to a dish!

To cut an avocado, all you need is a good quality chef’s knife. That’s all. No fancy avocado slicer or other weird one-use kitchen gadget.

  • Cut the avocado in half lengthwise.
  • Gently twist the two halves together to separate.
  • Insert a knife into the pit, and gently twist to remove. Be careful not to cut yourself!
  • Dice the avocado while it’s still in the skin by scoring lines horizontally and vertically. Make sure not to pierce the avocado skin with the knife tip.
  • Scoop the flesh out of the skin using a large spoon.

If you need to speed up the ripening process, place the avocados in a brown paper bag with an apple or banana and fold the bag shut. Can I Make This In Advance

I like to make this tomato avocado salad an hour or two in advance, so the flavors have time to set in. However, I do not recommend making this more than several hours in advance. The lime juice does help slow the browning of the avocado a bit, but avocado will brown fairly quickly, making it a much less appealing side. If you need to save a little bit of time, you could combine the other ingredients and then add the avocado just before serving.

How To Cut Avocado For Salad

For avocado salad, I think the avocado looks best if sliced into either strips or large dice. Since the avocado will break down slightly as its tossed with the other ingredients, you want large chunks for easy eating.

To cut an avocado, slice in half then remove the pit. I do this by firmly placing my knife into the pit and then turning it slightly so that it gives to release. From there, I slice the avocado right in its shell, then use a spoon to remove the avocado from the skin. This tip works really well if the avocado is ripe, but not overly ripe.
