How to make the very BEST Macaroni Salad! We LOVE this ...

These are the salad’s major add-ins, including cooked and raw vegetables, poultry, seafood, and canned beans. Some need little or no preparation before going into the salad. Others can be lightly cooked. Still others are best sauteed or grilled.

Tip: Choose at least 3 major flavorings. Let one ingredient dominate. For example, combine 1 pound of asparagus with 8 ounces each of sliced mushrooms and cherry tomatoes for a total of 2 pounds.

Ideas for adding cooked vegetables:

These can be boiled or blanched in the pasta water. Just add them to the pot during the last minute of boiling. Drain and cool them with the pasta, or shock them in ice-cold water for a just-right, tender-crisp texture.

  • Broccoli or cauliflower, florets cut into bite-size pieces, stems peeled and cut into 1/4-inch thick coins
  • Asparagus, trimmed and cut into bite-size lengths
  • Carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4-inch coins
  • Green beans, trimmed and cut into bite-size lengths
  • Snow peas or sugar snap peas, strings removed
  • Zucchini, quartered lengthwise and sliced 1/4-inch thick

Ideas for adding raw or canned vegetables:

Raw vegetables add snappy color and texture, while canned vegetables are convenient time-savers.

Flavor tips: For Asian-style pasta salads, consider cilantro, basil, and/or the citrus zests. Dill and mint are usually compatible with creamy-style salads. Rosemary and tarragon are strong flavors, so use just 1 tablespoon of either herb combined with 2 tablespoons of minced parsley.

Can Pasta Salad Be Frozen

  • No, do not freeze Pasta Salad.
  • It does not hold up well in the freezer, as it absorbs the dressing and becomes a soggy mess.

I must say that I am very blessed, and it is a good thing to be able to get things done. I just wish that I had the perfect list and that I could get all the right things done at the right time. In fact, I, like most of you, wish that I could have two of me and then I am pretty sure that I could get everything done that I need to do.

Or, I might just have double the problems.:) I hope that you enjoy this Pasta Salad as much as my family does. And if there is something in the pasta salad that you do not care for, then just go ahead and leave it out.

What Goes Into A Creamy Pasta Salad

What you add to your macaroni salad is up to you, but think about checking these boxes:

  • When choosing the pasta shape, choose something that will hold onto the dressing. Shapes that have nooks and crannies like elbow macaroni, small shells or even spiral shapes work nicely.
  • Add some color and texture with a variety of vegetables. We always end up adding onion and prefer red onion for the pop of color. In addition to the onion, we love celery, bell pepper, and radish. For more veggie suggestions, check below where we share possible variations to the salad.
  • For a little extra brininess, we love adding chopped dill pickle. You could leave this out or swap with a sweeter option like bread and butter pickles or for something different, go for spicy!

There are lots of options when it comes to making pasta salad. Weve already shared a few with you including our Quick and Easy Pasta Salad, this Lemon Orzo Pasta Salad with Cucumbers, and for a gluten-free salad, this Mediterranean Zucchini Noodles Salad.

When it comes to making a cold, creamy pasta salad, keep these tips in mind:

  • Dont overcook the pasta. Use the package directions of the pasta you choose as a guide, but a minute or two before it should be done, test it. If done, drain the pasta and move onto our next tip.
  • Rinse the cooked pasta under cold water before tossing with the salad dressing. If youve ever made pasta salad that turned sticky, not rinsing the pasta before tossing with the dressing could be the reason. The cooked pasta is coated in starches. By removing the starches, the salad wont turn sticky or clump as much.
  • Choose lots of colorful veggies and textures to add to the salad. Its just better this way.
  • Use a bright and flavorful salad dressing. Since the base of our dressing is creamy, we love brightening it up with some acid from vinegar and mustard. If you love sweeter salads, you can add a bit of honey, as well.

How to make the BEST Macaroni Salad! Everyone LOVED this ...

Pasta salad dressing typically is made with either an oil and vinegar dressing or with a creamier base, like mayonnaise.

I tend to go with a vinaigrette style dressing because it is so easy to change up the flavor combinations with different oils and vinegars. It will also keep a lot longer, either in your fridge or at room temperature when serving. It is also a lighter dressing with less calories.

If you prefer creamy Pasta Salad dressings though, you can always add mayo to the recipe usually substituting it for the oil in the recipe. Its such an easy way to mix it up!

This Pasta Salad Dressing is made with a base of olive oil and vinegar and herbs, spices and salt and pepper. Its a simple, versatile four ingredient recipe that is easy to adapt, but delicious as written!

You’ll need about 1 cup salad dressing to coat the salad. The key is to make sure the dressing is thick and emulsified, so the pasta absorbs the oil and vinegar evenly. For best results, use a mild rice wine vinegar or lemon juice. Balsamic vinegar turns the pasta an unattractive brown.

Open the lid of your Instant Pot, and add the Italian dressing and the chicken broth. Add the noodles into the Pot, making sure that all of the noodles are covered by the liquid. Put the lid on the Instant Pot and turn it to HIGH for 6 minutes. Once the cooking cycle is complete, perform a Quick Release.

Pour the noodles and the extra liquid into a bowl, and place in the fridge for about a half an hour.

At the end of the half hour, check on your noodles. They should be cold and should have absorbed the rest of the liquid in the bowl.

Add the bell peppers, feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, and salami. Stir and enjoy! If you like a stronger Italian dressing flavor or more liquid in your pasta salad, you can add ½ cup of Italian dressing into the bowl after tasting and stir.

Pam said, I teach cooking classes across the country, and as often as a possible, I demonstrate pasta salad. Why? Because people make it all the time. But rarely do these sturdy, colorful, economical salads taste as good as they look. They can be dry, bland, oily, sharp or uninteresting.

Since Pam wrote the article, Allrecipes updated the post slightly and credits a different author, but its got the same great tips.
