Santa Rosa Plums Are Beginning To Turn Purple: Lost A Bunch
This prolific bunch of Santa Rosa plums paid the price of losing 10 plums when one of the branches broke from being weighed down. In a workplace, this would be like reducing the headcount.
Even after I added a bamboo stake to support the partly broken branch and taped it with duct tape, Mother Nature decided to downsize our fruit salad tree.
Santa Rosa Plums are ready to harvest late in July. By this time the skin would have tuned purple, gives a bit, and pulls away from the branch with a slight twist. Plums should be picked with the stem attached to them.

Fun Blenheim Royal Apricot Facts:
- Blenheim Royal apricots have been grown in the Santa Clara Valley region of California since the 1900s. Its name traces its roots to the Luxembourg Gardens of Paris and the Bleinheim Palace in England. It is a good choice for a mild climate and has a fragrant aroma and is sweet and tart.
- Blenheim apricots ripen from the inside out and take longer to mature than other apricots. These soon-to-be pale-orange apricots are ready for fresh eating around late June.
- These are great dried or canned, as savory stuffing for duck and pork. Fruit tarts, anyone?

May 9 201: Safeguarding The Unripe Fruits Until Harvest Time
To protect the unripe fruits from being poached by predators, I cut strips of aluminum foil and hung them on the branches with Christmas decoration hooks.
This may deter the birds who are frightened by the shiny aluminum strips fluttering in the wind, but will this keep the hungry squirrels out? This will remain to be seen.
What Is A Fruit Salad Tree
So you love fruit and want to grow your own, but your gardening space is limited. Not enough room for multiple fruit trees? No problem. Fruit salad trees are the answer. They come in four different types and bear up to eight different fruits of the same family on the one tree. Sorry, it doesnt work to have oranges and pears on the same tree.
The other great thing about fruit salad trees is that the fruit ripening is staggered so you dont have a giant harvest ready all at once. How did this miracle come about? Grafting, an old method of asexual plant propagation, is being used in a newer way to accommodate multiple types of fruit on the same plant.
Grafting is used to add one or more new cultivars onto an existing fruit or nut tree. As mentioned, oranges and pears are too different and wont graft on the same tree so different plants from the same family must be used in the grafting.

Fruit Salad trees are grafted fruit trees in which each branch grows a different fruit. You may have heard of multi-grafted apple trees but what about a single tree that produces a full range of different stone fruits peaches, apricots, nectarines, and plums?! Thats what we call a fruit salad tree because from one single tree you can make a whole fruit salad. Stone fruits are all closely-related members of the genus Prunus . Thats why they can all be grafted onto the same tree.
Fruit salad trees are perfect for packing as much production as possible into small space gardens. You can even grow them in large pots on decks and patios. They prefer full sun in rich, fertile, somewhat acidic soil with good drainage. Zones 5-9
The varieties of fruit included on each fruit salad tree are:
Peach ‘Redhaven’ – An all-purpose, highly productive, self-fertile, freestone peach variety with a low level of fuzz on the red-blushed skin and delicious, sweet, firm, juicy yellow flesh. ‘Redhaven’ is the most widely planted peach variety worldwide because of its productivity and flavour. Flowers are pink and fragrant. Resistant to bacterial leaf spot.
Nectarine ‘Red Gold’ – An all-purpose, highly productive, self-fertile, freestone nectarine with dark red and gold skin and sweet, tangy, and juicy yellow flesh. ‘Red Gold’ is one of the most widely planted nectarines because of its productivity and flavour. Flowers are pink.

The fruit salad tree showed more promise with an explosion of beautiful blossoms in the garden. Although these were short-lived, it was a sign of good things to come.

The so-called fruit salad tree sprouts as many as seven varieties of fruit in one tree. The combinations aren’t quite as diverse as bountiful fruit bowls apples and peaches, for example, can’t mix. But the trees combine several members of fruit families into one.
A citrus version grows oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, tangelos, lemonades and grapefruit. A stone fruit tree yields peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines, peachcots and peacherines. The trees can be planted outside in small back yards , or kept in a pot. Most are self-pollinating so no partner trees or pollinating bees are needed.
“Houses are getting bigger and lots are getting smaller,” said Lisa Bradford, a sales associate with Tsugawa Nursery in Woodland, Wash. “We think that’s what’s making these multiple fruit trees more popular.”
New Trees, Old Concept
Tsugawa Nursery offers stone fruit salad trees, which it buys from Dave Wilson Nurseries in Hickman, Calif. Durling Nursery of Fallbrook, Calif. offers multiple citrus fruit trees. And James and Kerry West of the Fruit Salad Tree Company offer an ambitious line of mixed fruit trees through their orchards, based in Emmaville in New South Wales, Australia. The Wests have just begun marketing their trees to the United States through online shipping.
Fruit salad trees may be growing more popular now, but the technique used to craft them grafting is nearly as old as fruit tree growing itself.

When To Plant Fruit Trees
This will depend on how you buy them and where you live
- Bare rooted trees will always be planted in mid to late winter
- Potted varieties can be planted at any time of the year. The best time is in early autumn, the soil is still warm, so you will get some root growth before winter, and the trees will have time to settle in before the first summer. You can also plant in early spring.
- In warmer climates where you get wet summers, spring can be a good time to plant.

The rootstock for the Fruit Salad trees is the new KRYMSK 1/VVA-1 which is a dwarfing rootstock that should result in trees 8 ft. tall and will help the grafts produce good-sized fruit starting at a young age of just 2-3 years.

Fun Fantasia Nectarine Facts:
- So far, this is the only nectarine that made its debut on the lower branch. It is the late bloomer of the stonefruit quartet.
- Harvest time will be around late July/early August to the first half of September.
- Here’s a quick and easy salad recipe for the hot summer days: toss sliced fresh nectarine, chopped green onions, fresh mushrooms, fresh dill, a dash of salt and pepper, vinegar dressing and serve in lettuce cups.

So What Is A Fruit Salad Tree
A fruit salad tree is a multi-grafted tree of several fruits from the same family on one tree. Here are some quick facts about this special kind of tree.
- A multi-grafted apple tree can have Anna, Dorsett golden, Fuji, and Gordon on the same tree because these belong to the same family of apples.
- You can have a 3-in-1 cherry tree, 5-in-1 citrus tree with lemons and key limes, tangelos, pomelos, mandarin oranges, or a 4-in-1 plum tree with four varieties of plums.
- But you cannot expect to find a combination of lemon, apple, and cherry grafted on the same trunk because these do not belong to the same family of fruits.
I chose a 4-in-1 stone fruit salad tree for my garden. Babcock white peach, Late Santa Rosa plums, Blenheim apricot, and Fantasia nectarinesthese colorful labels with pictures of the four stone fruits reassured me that one day soon I will be harvesting these juicy fruits from this tree in one-quarter of the space.
The multi-grafted fruit tree is also self-pollinating, which means each type pollinates each other and prolongs the harvest season.

Grow A Fruit Salad Tree: A Tree That Grows 4 Different Fruits
I have always been obsessed with a “fruit salad” treea multi-grafted tree that produces four or more different fruits on one tree trunk. The thought always fascinated me the hybrid tree would make an interesting subject for my garden. Here is why:
- First and foremost, I would not need an orchard to produce peaches, nectarines, plums, and apricots and worry about what to do with the bushels of fruits.
- A multi-grafted fruit salad tree is ideal for limited garden space and takes up a fraction of the area.

Where To Order Fruit Trees In Canada

Living in Prairie Canada, with a shortseason and low zone , I have a heck of a time finding good places to orderfruit trees. There arent all that many places that carryultra-hardy trees to begin with, and even fewer nurseries are willingto ship trees by courier or by mail.
Over the years, I have made a list of Canadian nurseries that have a good reputation, and who will ship fruit trees. I have personally ordered from most of these companies at some point in the last 10 years, and have been happy with the service I have received. Of the ones I have not personally ordered from, all but one have received good reviews from fellow growers that have ordered from them before. Only Prairie Hardy Trees is too new to have much of a reputation, but Ive placed an order for this spring, and well see how it turns out.
