If you do decide to follow a shake diet plan for a week, choose wisely. As the name implies, protein shakes are high in protein, but usually not much else. They’re typically designed to help you meet increased protein needs during periods of intense exercise when it can be hard to get enough protein through meals alone.
On the other hand, meal replacement shakes are designed to mimic a complete, low-calorie meal. In addition to protein, they also contain carbohydrates, fat, vitamins and minerals in balanced proportions to help you meet your daily needs of both macronutrients and micronutrients.
Relying on protein shakes alone can set you up for nutrient deficiencies, whereas meal replacement shakes usually contain everything you need, at least for the short term.
But, not all pre-packaged meal replacement shakes are the same. Some are high in sugar, while others are high in artificial sweeteners â neither of which are desirable. Drinking these shakes may help you lose weight in the short-term, but the benefits end there.
If you opt for a pre-packaged meal replacement, make sure to check ingredient lists and choose ones with the least amount of additives and sugar.
Which Meal To Replace
There is no one right way to do this, so choose the meal that works best for you. If mornings are such a rush that you often skip breakfast, make your protein shake the night before, or purchase premade protein shakes. Make sure you read the labels and find one that has 30 to 40 grams of protein and no or very little added sugar. Pay attention to the sodium count as well.
If you generally snack or indulge in fast food at lunchtime, try substituting a protein shake for that meal. If a shake alone doesn’t seem filling enough, add a piece of fruit and a small handful of unsalted nuts. People who get home from work very late might find it helpful to replace dinner with a protein shake. You may have to experiment to find what works best for you, and it might even be different meals on different days so don’t be afraid to be flexible.

Heres a sample meal plan you can use while on the protein shake diet:
- 1/2 avocado or 1 cup Greek yogurt
- 2 cups kale
- 1/2 cup raspberries
You can also add in an extra serving of protein here if this is too difficult. Just split up your protein shakes with 1-2 servings of the protein powder for 5 total meals.
Protein Shake Diet Results
Like with any diet youre on it can become repetitive and up feeling a little boring by the end of the week.
You need to stay motivated and stick to the plan if you want to lose weight while youre on the protein shake diet.
Keep in mind a high-protein diet will be more satisfying than other kinds of diets. Studies have found protein to be quite satiating so you shouldnt feel overly hungry throughout the diet.
The protein shake diet is very simple to follow and is easy to stick to since theres low effort required.
One thing I found over the years is the more effort required for the diet the less likely they are to stick with it.

If youre determined to make the necessary changes to live a longer and healthier life then the protein shake diet will help get you started.
Although I dont recommend going on it longer than one week because then it can start to mess with your bowels.
Try to have some activity while youre on the protein shake diet to increase your results.

So I gave up all processed foods and mainly ate just green smoothies, fruit, salad vegetables, and nuts/seeds and avocados.

Meal replacement shakes also tend to be lacking in fiber, which is important for keeping you healthy and preventing constipation.
In addition, replacing meals with protein shakes or meal replacement shakes may be convenient, but it doesn’t teach you how to make healthy choices on your own.
