Amish Sweet And Sour Dressing

SWEET AND SOUR SALAD DRESSING!! MY GRANDMOTHER’S RECIPE!!

When I think of an Amish salad dressing, I think of Amish Sweet and Sour Dressing. The celery seed-laden dressing with vinegar and oil has long been one of my favorites.

The first time I ever remember eating this style of sweet and sour dressing was at a Dutch Pantry restaurant on a garden salad of mostly iceberg lettuce when I was a child. Despite my lack of enthusiasm for food in general during much of my childhood, I still remember eating this dressing.

As an adult, I used to order it every time I ate at a Dutch Pantry, which was much more often than in my childhood as I passed one on the way home from work every day. I also purchase Bob Evans Colonial dressing by the pint as well as in their restaurants. Or, I ate it when I went on fairly frequent trips to the Amish Country of Ohio. Then, I moved to an area that lacked any Dutch Pantry, Bob Evans, or an Amish Country. So, I bought the recipe of one of my favorite Amish Country restaurants and started making my own.

It stores very well in the refrigerator. A batch usually lasts me a couple of months when I make Amish Macaroni Salad for a crowd and even longer if I dont. I have no idea what the actual shelf-life should be I am just relaying my experience.

Oriental Salad Recipe With Sweet & Sour Dressing

This recipe is very easy and makes a lot. You can easily double or triple it to serve more without much trouble. It travels well and is great for potlucks and barbecues.

I prefer to make this salad a few hours in advance omitting the ramen noodles. I like them to remain crunchy. When youre ready to serve, add the ramen and salad dressing and toss. Thats it.

This is a healthy and versatile salad that goes well with any main dish. As well, to turn it into an entree salad add protein like grilled chicken, steak, or shrimp.

Basic Sweet And Sour Vinaigrette

Salad dressing is one of the things I learned to make early in my life. This vinaigrette is what my grandma and mom would “whip up” for every type of salad known to womankind. It is great for potlucks and picnics because it is vinegar based, and it can be remixed with nearly any type of ingredients you care to use. It is foolproof! The basic version is also easy to remember.

Spinach Salad With Homemade Dressing Video

Start Video Transcript

Hi, Kristy in the Rada kitchen, today Im sharing a recipe for a homemade salad dressing to go on a spinach salad. This is a recipe out of our Unforgettable recipe book. It has 100 years worth of traditional, unforgettable American recipes. From 1900 to 1990, they might be recipes you enjoy now, you might find some surprises in there. I also like how the book describes what was happening in each decade with interesting, fun facts. You will need a fourth cup of chopped onion. This spinach salad is from the 1960s. Spinach salad back in the 1950s was made with a hot bacon dressing, but in the 60s Americans discovered they could make a lot of things in their blender. They made a sweet and sour dressing for spinach, and this recipe became the rage even for those who didnt normally like spinach salad, so it was a big hit. Thats in this book, theres lots of tidbits about each decade.

Were going to add this to our bowl of spinach. Were going to add 2 cups of croutons. Just gently toss it to mix it. Then were going to add our fresh made sweet and sour dressing. And what else I like to do with this salad is when youre ready to serve it put it on a plate and add some fresh raspberries for nice color. Enjoy this blast from the past salad and many more from our Unforgettable recipe book.

~ Pa Deutsch Sweet & Sour Salad Dressing~

If you live in or around a region in Pennsylvania influenced by a Pennsylvania Deutsch community, you know all about this drizzly, creamy-yellow, sweet and sour, onion-and-celery-laced oil-based salad dressing. So as to avoid any confusion, it is different from Amish sweet & sour salad dressing, which is a thicker, similarly-flavored mayonnaise- or salad-dressing-based concoction . How do I know this stuff? I’ve lived my entire life in Pennsylvania .

You say Pennsylvania Dutch, We say Pennsylvania Deutsch:

Let me make it clear that Pennsylvania Dutch cookery does not belong solely to PA and it is not Dutch either. The term “Dutch” was the early English settlers slang for the German word “Deutsch”. So: When most people incorrectly say “Pennsylvania Dutch”, they should be saying “Pennsylvania Deutsch”, crediting the Germanic or German-speaking immigrants from Germany and Switzerland for this cuisine. The majority of these people were either Amish, Mennonite or Brethren, all of which were considered “Anabaptist”. They were fleeing the mountains of Switzerland and southern Germany to avoid religious persecution and established several communites in the Lehigh Valley. Why? Thank William Penn for his free-thinking, open-door, equal-opportunity-for-all of any religion or race politics. Pennsylvania set an example for the other colonies, who all had established an official “State” religion. Pennsylvania. The first to welcome people of all beliefs and walks of life? You betcha.

This Sweet & Sour Salad has the perfect amount of tang and the perfect amount of sweet!

I originally shared this recipe in July of 2010. It was one of the dishes I had served at my moms 80th birthday party. It was such a fun party and had a vintage theme to it.

If you would like to check out the rest of the menu and the decor head on over to the party post here. You can check out the recipes for some of the other food I served here quiche, pink lemonade cake, and salads

Todays salad recipe was a nice addition to the salad buffet at the party.

It is also an easy one to add chicken to and make into a main dish. I did not use chicken in it for the luncheon. The recipe also calls for cheese but I forgot to add it for these photos! But you should add it.

The dressing has a nice sweet and tangy flavor to it.

For the party I used grapes but it also works well with mandarin oranges and pineapple or you could use all three.

The recipe also calls for bacon or ham. I used bacon.

I prepped as much as I could the day before. Cut up the onions, the fruit, cooked the bacon, sliced the mushrooms, grated the cheese and made the dressing. It only took a few minutes before the party to throw it all together. The only thing I cut up at the last minute was the avocado which I didnt want to turn brown. The recipe calls for a combination of lettuce and spinach.

Sweet And Sour Dressing

Every good salad needs a good salad dressing. When I fix my favorite Strawberry Salad, I always use this Sweet and Sour Dressing recipe to go with it!

When you see the ingredients all together, it looks like an odd mix: orange juice, vinegar, sugar, mustard, onion flakesbut trust me, once everything is combined into this dressing, the flavor is amazing.

Its tangy, sweet, and sour, and it complements most salads beautifully. Its a great dressing where you need a kick of flavor, and it mixes so well with fruitier salads too!

How To Make Sweet And Sour Salad Dressing

This is such an easy salad dressing recipe, and you can prepare and store in the refrigerator until youre ready to use it.

  • Stir all together all the ingredients except the oil.
  • Place in a food processor or blender and blend for about one minute.
  • Slowly drizzle in the oil so it emulsifies.
  • Transfer to an airtight container and store in the fridge.
  • Stir or shake before serving.
  • My favorite salad to serve with this dressing is with our Strawberry Salad, sugared almonds, and homemade croutons! Its just perfect!

    What Makes A Good Salad

    (2 Pack) Maple Grove Sweet

Typically, really good salads have contrasting textures. For instance, crunchy lettuce, nuts, and/or croutons paired with something creamy like avocado or the salad dressing. Chewy craisins or other dried fruit is good too.

As well, stand-out salads have one bold flavor and a hint of sweetness. Sometimes an ingredient hits a couple of different of these qualities. For this salad, the dressing serves both bold flavor and slightly sweet. Another example, if you add blue cheese to a salad it would definitely be a bold flavor as well as have a creamy texture.

Now, when youre thinking about putting a salad together, remember these very versatile rules for the best possible salad.
