Koa Wood Bowls And Vessels
After discovering the beauty and rare nature of Koa in 2013, artist Craig Villarrubia was inspired to learn how to work with this exotic wood. He was serendipitously given a lathe. He spent every available hour learning to turn wood and improve his craftsmanship. Time alone on the lathe and the process of transforming logs into Hawaiian art became a very zen and spiritual experience for craftsman Craig Villarrubia.
Each completed Koa wood bowl is personally harvested wood from the Koawood Ranch. After rough-turning a Koa bowl to about an inch thick, he lets the wood dry for several months. Then, he remounts the wood on his lathe for a final round of shaping and sanding. Each piece is buffed and polished to create a beautiful one-of-a-kind Koa wood heirloom.

Wooden bowls achieve a beautiful deep luster and a patina that is only made with years of regular use and proper care. The first small nicks and scratches you put on your wooden bowl are just the first in a thousand which will give your bowl an added character that you will cherish for many years to come.
Wooden bowls can be washed using hot water and dish soap, just as you would pots and pans, but never placed in a dishwasher. My bowls are not sealed or lacquered so that you can create the patina of use that is most desirable .
Here is the old adage for polishing wooden bowls every day for a month, every week for a year, then every month thereafter.

Wood And Water Dont Mix
To start, wooden bowls are made of wood.
After a tree has come down and is no longer growing, wood and water do not make a good combination. Wood is a soft and porous material that will absorb water if any is left sitting at the bottom of the vessel, or if the dish itself is immersed in water.
When it absorbs water it will swell, sometimes resulting in cracks, twists or splits. Hot water is particularly bad for this material.
This means, to preserve your bowl in the best possible condition, it should only be wiped out with a damp cloth or given the briefest of washes in warm, soapy water. Then it should be dried promptly with a soft tea towel.
To maintain the integrity of the wood, the container should be lightly rubbed inside and out with mineral oil, or a healthy oil such as olive, sunflower or coconut. Treat individual serving dishes and any wooden salad utensils in the same manner.
