The Best Canned Tuna For Tuna Salad

To make the best tuna salad sandwich, it helps to start with high-quality canned tuna. We prefer tuna that is packed in extra virgin olive oil, because the oil intensifies the flavor of the tuna.

Both Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods have excellent canned tuna packed in olive oil that work perfectly for this tuna salad. The brands we most often use are Wild Planet Albacore Solid Wild Tuna in Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Genova Yellowfin Tuna in Olive Oil.

If you don’t like the oil that the tuna is packed in, you can always drain it, and add back a tablespoon or so of your own high quality extra virgin olive oil.

If all you have is tuna packed in water, drain it, and add a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil to it. Finding the best canned tuna for your taste may require a bit of experimentation with brands.

When choosing the four recipes, I wanted to see what pops up at the top of a Google search, as well as what some of our favorite food celebrities and bloggers are claiming as their go-to tuna salad. As far as method goes, all tuna salads are pretty much the same: You put all your ingredients in a bowl, then mix them up. Because there wasnt too much variation in the method, I wanted to make sure that the ingredient lists on each of these tuna salads looked vastly different. Here are the salads that I chose.

Food Network: This recipe is not only one of the top results on Google for tuna salad recipe, but it also boasts a 5-star rating and nearly 130 reviews. Upon first glance, the ingredient list reads super classic. No nonsense just a classic deli-style tuna salad. I wanted something basic and traditional to compare with other more untraditional versions.

: This recipe is pretty on par with the classic tuna salad ingredient list, but it also added chopped apples and fresh basil, which are two ingredients that Ive never used in a tuna salad. Chopped apples? And canned fish? Ill be the judge of that, Martha.

Should You Cut Potatoes Before Or After Boiling

I prefer to boil my potatoes whole, then chill in the fridge and cut them after theyve cooled. Its easy to slice through the potatoes and I feel theyre slightly less waterlogged this way.

If you prefer to slice and cube your potatoes first, just remember to reduce the boil time to about 12-15 minutes.

How I Tested The Tuna Salads

I made all of the tuna salads in one day and enjoyed them over the next couple of days. I enjoyed them straight-up, and also tried them with crackers and on toast, although I did not factor in the way that I served them in my final evaluation. I was solely looking at the salads themselves. I used oil-packed and water-packed tuna, depending on what the recipe called for.

After I made all four salads, I didnt feel like there was a resounding winner, because I liked and disliked components of all of them. I determined the winner based on the salad that I found myself most excited to return to in the following days.

Any can or jar of tuna will work in a sandwich. Just make sure you drain the water or oil before mixing with the ingredients for tuna salad.

I prefer using water-packed tuna in tuna salad, because Im already adding mayonnaise to the recipe. I save oil-packed tuna for dishes where the oil matters a bit more, such as in this Salad Nicoise, because oil-packed tuna is richer than water-packed tuna.

That being said, tuna salad is no time to get pickyjust use what you have on hand.

Ingredients You Need For The Best Tuna Salad Recipe

    The BEST Tuna Salad Sandwich

This healthy tuna salad comes together with just a few simple fresh ingredients and pantry staples. The key is to use good tuna and load it up with crunch and flavor using fresh ingredients you may already have on hand. Heres what youll need to make it:

    • Tuna – You’ll need 3 cans of quality tuna , packed in water or olive oil. I use responsibly caught Yellowfin Albacore tuna .
    • Vegetables – Cucumbers, celery, radish, and onions chopped into small bits will add crunch, texture, color, and nutrition.
    • Fresh herbs – Chopped parsley and mint for great fresh, cooling flavor.
    • Olives, capers, or pickles – Pitted and sliced kalamata olives or a handful of drained capers will add a nice briny and slightly salty flavor to this tuna salad recipe. This is a very Mediterranean thing to do, but if you’re not a fan of olives or capers, you can chop up some pickles instead.

How To Make The Best Tuna Salad

When I was little, my two favorite foods were macaroni and cheese and tuna salad and now that Im adult, things havent changed all that much. When it comes to making tuna salad, we do our best to keep things really simple. Let me walk you through how we make it.

Canned tuna: We buy canned albacore tuna thats been caught with hand-operated pole-and-lines. We also prefer the cans with tuna thats been cooked in the can. This tuna tends to be more succulent and retains all of its natural juices and fats. Brands that dont can tuna this way, cook the tuna first and then can it, which means that much of the natural juices and fats get lost. Thats why you will often see tuna canned in water or oil. When the tuna is cooked right in the can, there is no need for the extra water or oil. On that same token, when you buy tuna thats been cooked in the can, there is no need to drain it before making tuna salad.

A note about buying tuna and other seafood: There are lots of options when it comes to canned tuna and to be honest, there are some pretty unfortunate choices available. We try our best to eat as sustainably as possible and find that the Monterey Bay Seafood Watch is helpful in figuring out which species are endangered as well as the best fishing practices to look for when buying seafood.

More simple salads: I love this simple chicken salad, our easy egg salad and when I have avocados in the house, I make this avocado egg salad.

    Broccoli Tuna Salad Ingredients

Thanks to easy pantry staples, this tuna salad is a speedy recipe to make.

    • Canned Tuna: I love to use wild albacore tuna in water, but the choice is yours.
    • Broccoli Rice: The small size of broccoli rice is perfect for hiding in this recipe.
    • Mayonnaise: While you can use a store-bought version, my homemade mayonnaise is super easy to whip up with an immersion blender.
    • Dijon Mustard: A hint of spice complements the mayonnaise and tuna well.
    • Green Onion: Adds a crisp and refreshing flavor.
    • Sunflower Seeds: For little bits of crunchiness in every bite.
    • Herbs: Im using chopped parsley, but feel free to use whichever herbs you like.
