We love how nostalgic and passionate our loyal taco salad fans are and look forward to introducing it to a new generation of fans with the same build and quality ingredients, Wendys vice president of brand marketing, Carl Loredo, said in 2016 when the salad made its return .
Just like the taco salad from 1982, the current version on Wendys menu includes a bed of chopped romaine lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheddar cheese, and a bowl of its perfectly seasoned and positively irresistible signature chili on the side that contains red kidney beans, pinto beans, and ground beef . Customers are also given tortilla chips, sour cream, and salsa, which the chain promises are of the highest quality. The taco chips are made from whole grain corn. The signature salsa is made with roasted tomatoes, jalapeño, and ancho peppers, Wendys Culinary Innovation team member Emily Kessler told The Square Deal. And its all served on the side, giving customers the option to top or dip their salad as they choose. As for dressings, the chain has four to choose from: pomegranate vinaigrette, Caesar, and both a regular and southwest ranch.

It’s almost time to eat. But first, you’ll need to assemble the taco salad. You’ll distribute the lettuce and tomatoes equally in two large bowls. Then, sprinkle the cheese on each salad. How To Make Wendys Taco Salad
To make the chili, heat the olive oil in a large pot and sauté the onion, bell pepper and celery. Add the tomato paste, chili powder, cumin and garlic powder. Cook for another 2 minutes.
Add your ground beef and cook until evenly browned. Next add your crushed tomatoes, kidney beans and pinto beans. Bring the chili to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 30-40 minutes. Season the chili with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
To assemble the taco salad, place your lettuce in a bowl. Add the cheddar cheese and tomatoes and top with broken corn tortilla chips and the chili. Lastly add a dollop of sour cream and enjoy!

This salad can be prepped in advance and stored in mason jars for weekday lunches. Once the chili has cooled down, pour a couple of spoonfuls into the jar. Then add the cheese, tomatoes, and lettuce, and twist the lid on tight. Store your tortilla chips and sour cream separately and place all of the containers in the fridge. - 3stalks celery, finely chopped
- 1poundextra-lean ground beef
- 2cloves garlic, minced
- 1can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
- 1can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
- 11 can crushed tomatoes
- 1cupbeef broth
- 1bunch romaine lettuce, chopped
- 1tomato, sliced
- 1/2cupshredded cheddar cheese
- Tortilla chips
- Salsa or jalapeños
For the Chili
First, heat a large pot over medium-high heat. Then add the onions and celery, sauteing for about 2-3 minutes until veggies soften. Next, add ground beef and brown for another 2-3 minutes until the meat is nicely browned.
Then add the spices- garlic, chili powder, coriander, salt, and pepper. Stir the ingredients well and cook for 2-3 minutes until the flavors develop.
Add kidney beans, pinto beans, tomatoes, and beef broth, bring the pot to a boil, stir well. Lower heat to medium-low, and then cover with a lid to simmer for 20 minutes.
For the Salad
While chili is cooking, assemble the salad. Simply chop the lettuce and place in a bowl. Once the chili has finished cooking, spoon the chili on top, followed by tortilla chips, sour cream, and salsa. If you like a bit of heat, you can also add jalapeño peppers.
