How to Make Creamy Caesar Salad Dressing – Gluten Free

Do you remember the first time you tasted a Caesar salad? I cant say that I do. But I have seen a lot of bad Caesar salads. This classic salad is often poorly made: tired croutons, fake Parmesan cheese, and limp romaine.

At its finest, its a fantastic combination of flavors: tangy, sharp, and savory. When I watched Jamie Oliver make a version of this grilled chicken Caesar salad on Fifteen Minute Meals, I was inspired to rethink it. I adore Jamie Oliver hes the reason I started my food blog in the first place. I adapted his recipe to make it dairy-free.

All the elements here are grilled, including the lettuce. This gives the entire salad a smoky taste that elevates it from a typical Caesar, and the freshly made dressing is zingy and hearty.

Migraine diet notes: Some people might be sensitive to canned fish, smoked paprika, and lemon. Substitute white vinegar and water for the lemon juice. Use 1/4 tsp dry mustard and a bit of mayo instead of the Dijon. It wont be quite as zingy but should still be tasty.

How To Make Honey Mustard Vinaigrette

No one can believe how simple it is to make, too! All you need are a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand ground mustard, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, honey, shallot, garlic, and some salt and pepper.

Just combine into a mason jar with a lid, shake, and serve. If you dont have a mason jar with a lid, you can always give it a good whisk in a bowl. I just love the mason jar because it makes for easy storing in the refrigerator, too.

To Know When Looking For A Bottled Caesar Dressing

Looking for the best store bought Caesar dressing can make you go crazy, especially if you want a product with a rich flavor but also a smooth texture and preferably at a convenient price. Keep the tips below in mind if you want to find the best bottled Caesar dressing.

    • Read the Ingredient List. The label should present the full list of ingredients contained by the dressing. Always check it and see if they are to your liking. Instead of just picking any bottle and then throwing it away because you dont like the flavor, read the label to make sure the ingredients are close to what you desire. Otherwise, you are just punishing your taste buds. Not to mention, youre throwing money out the window.
    • Look at How Much Salt It Contains. Sodium is another ingredient that boosts the taste of this delicious dressing, but unfortunately, too much salt will spike your blood pressure. Many brands contain somewhere between 160mg and 300mg of sodium per serving, so look for a product that doesnt exceed this limit.
    • Ensure It Is Preservatives and Additives-Free. Regardless of what producers may say, as long as the dressing comes in a bottle and has an extended expiration date, then it also contains some preservatives that are meant to keep the product fresh. Still, go for a product that has fewer additives and colorants.

What Kind Of Salad Dressings Are Dairy

Now that you know which salad dressings are generally safe for a gluten-free diet, lets go through the list one more time and see which ones are going to be both gluten AND dairy-free.

    • Vinaigrettes
    • Italian dressing
    • Mayonnaise or vegan mayonnaise based dressings

If you make your own dressing at home, its possible to still enjoy the other types of dressing, as long as you use dairy-free alternatives or omitting dairy ingredients.

For Caesar salad dressing, youd want to omit the Parmesan cheese in the recipe.

In yogurt or buttermilk dressings, youll want to use dairy-free yogurt or make your own buttermilk using dairy-free milk and lemon juice as an alternative.

For ranch dressings, you can find some brands that are dairy-free, where they dont use any dairy at all. Or you can try your hand at making it at home using my gluten-free dairy-free egg-free ranch dressing recipe.

Now that you know generally which salad dressings are good options for your gluten-free diet, lets go more into what ingredients youll want to avoid in bottled salad dressings.

Next, our second battle brand, Sir Kensingtons Classic Ranch, had a healthy tangy taste made with sunflower oil. Is Salad Dressing Gluten Free

Whether salad dressing is gluten free is a confusing topic, because many dressings do contain gluten in additives, while others do not.

When you are at the store, gazing at a bottle of dressing and wondering if it contains gluten, first check the food allergen statement on products to see if it says contains wheat. If there is a statement that says contains wheat, the dressing is not gluten free.

When you look at the ingredient list, check for wheat, rye or barley and ingredients that might contain gluten that are often found in salad dressing. These include:

    • Artificial color

Gluten Free And Dairy Free Caesar Salad Dressing Recipe

Believe it or not, Caesar salad was my kids favorite school lunch!

Running out of gluten-free and dairy-free lunch ideas for your kids lunchboxes? This can be a particular challenge when most traditional options revolve around bread and cheese. Of course you can always use gluten-free bread to make the traditional turkey or peanut butter and jelly, but why not think outside the standard lunch box fare and prepare a fresh salad? Children are often big fans of Caesar salad for the creamy dressing, pleasantly non-bitter romaine lettuce and the crunchy croutons. I love to use Easy Lunchboxes since its easy to keep everything separated the croutons would be a bit mushy if I put them on in the morning!

I usually make this dressing with Parmesan cheese but have had a few people request a dairy-free version. I adapted this recipe, which is a fan favorite, by eliminating the cheese and adding the Dijon mustard. In my opinion, its almost identical. My family gave it the double thumbs up! If you want really traditional, you can top it with anchovies .

The recipes below give you an option of that beloved crunch and the creaminess you get from a restaurant Caesar salad without the use of wheat or dairy. I make the dressing with regular mayonnaise, which is made from egg and naturally dairy free, and the croutons I prepare from gluten-free sliced bread or baguette. With a few key ingredients on hand youll be surprised how easy it is to prepare!

    Caesar Salad Dressing Recipe

    by Tamar· July 24, 2015

If you have a soy allergy, that whole aisle of salad dressings at the grocery store is annoying. Why must they make so many dressings with soybean oil? And some of them are really annoying because they dont specify which they use, listing something like soybean AND/OR olive oil. I dont know why it took me so long to just make salad dressing myself. I think its my reluctance to make everything that we eat, and not wanting to give up on buying basic things like condiments and salad dressing. But then I realized how easy it is to make your own dressing. Added bonus it tastes so fresh. And theres no icky raw egg.

This Caesar dressing recipe is gluten free, and depending on the mayonnaise you use, can also be soy free, egg free and/or seed free. You could try making it dairy free by omitting the Parmesan cheese. However, you may need to make up for it with additional salt or something else. I havent tried making this dairy free, nor experimented with things like nutritional yeast . If you try to make this dairy free, please leave a comment and let us know how it turns out!

Fresh lemon juice is important to this recipe. You can certainly make it with bottled lemon juice, but the taste wont be as fresh and delicious. If youre avoiding gluten and/or soy, be sure to check the ingredients of your Worcestershire sauce. Last time I checked, Lea & Perrins brand was gluten free and soy free.

This dressing is made from organic extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice, apple cider vinegar, hemp seeds, capers, garlic, onion, pepper, and dulse plus nutritional yeast, water, and salt. That is itso fresh and so clean!

Whats dulse? Glad you asked. Its a dark red edible seaweed thats loaded with protein and vitamins B6, B12, C, and E along with potassium, iron, calcium, zinc, and other nutrients.

Gluten Ingredients To Avoid In Salad Dressing

In addition to knowing which salad dressings are generally going to be safe for your gluten-free diet, its also important to know what ingredients youll want to look for in order to avoid them.

You can look at the back of any bottled salad dressing and look for these ingredients. If you find them, youll know youll want to avoid this product and look for something different that is gluten-free.

    • Malt vinegar
    • Soy sauce
    • Spice blend

Some of these ingredients may be an indication of gluten in the product, while sometimes it isnt.

For example, modified food starch CAN be made from gluten, but it isnt always necessarily made from gluten.

Modified food starch can also be made from corn, and if the packaging shows modified food starch , youll know that ingredient is gluten-free, as corn doesnt contain gluten.

The main thing to keep in mind is that if you see one of these ingredients in an ingredients list, they may contain gluten.

If there are details about that ingredient, like more ingredients within parentheses, and these dont contain any gluten-containing ingredients, then you can feel okay about that product being gluten-free.

One of my little secrets is that I carry around a copy of my GFDF Take Along Cards so that I always have a point of reference when I can sneak a peek at the ingredient list of a food.
