How to Make Tomato Basil Mozzarella Salad

Traditionally, Caprese salad combines slices of tomatoes, mozzarella, fresh basil, salt, pepper and a drizzle of quality extra virgin olive oil. Here in the United States, you might see Caprese salad with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar or maybe tossed with a little basil pesto. While we love balsamic and adore pesto, when making Caprese salad in our kitchen, we keep it classic.

Salt And Black Pepper

The salt you sprinkle on your salad is just as important as the rest of the ingredients.

Use kosher or coarse sea salt, but whatever you do, dont use table salt! Regular table salt is too salty. A large flake salt like this flaky sea salt is perfect!

Top off the caprese salad with a nice crack of ground black pepper to add a bit more to the already beautiful flavor profile of the dish.

How To Make It

  • Whisk together 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 1 tsp kosher salt, ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil, and a ¼ cup of red wine vinegar.
  • Slice 1 medium red onion into strips as shown. Also, slice the cherry tomatoes into halves and give the basil a light chop.
  • In a large bowl combine the pint of cherry tomatoes, cup of drained fresh mozzarella balls, sliced onions, and basil leaves.
  • Right before serving, whisk the dressing one more time and pour half of it onto the salad. Give it a toss, and if needed add a touch more dressing – it’s better to under-dress the salad. Serve right away so that the Italian tomato salad does not get soggy.
  • So that’s how to make a delicious salad with cherry tomatoes and fresh mozzarella.

    • Use good quality extra virgin olive oil.
    • Only 1 tsp of kosher was used, adjust accordingly.
    • Cherry tomatoes can be substituted with regular-sized tomatoes cut into bite-sized pieces. Ditto for the fresh mozzarella balls.
    • To ensure a better salad, wait until the last minute to dress the tomatoes.
    • Start off by dressing the salad with only half the dressing. It’s better to use too little than too much. The rest can be served on the side.

    • Prepare the tomatoes: If you are using small cherry tomatoes, simply chop them in half or quarters. For larger tomatoes, chop them into even-sized smaller cubes.

Make sure to use a sharp knife, so you dont squash the tomatoes too much. Then transfer the tomato to a large serving bowl

    • Prepare the mozzarella: Drain the liquid from the bocconcini and then slice each ball in half and transfer to the bowl with the tomatoes. If you have a large piece of mozzarella, simply chop it into small cubes you need around 1 cup chopped.

Some people believe that tearing the mozzarella rather than chopping it will yield a better texture. Feel free to experiment.

    • Chop the avocado, garlic and basil: This is best done last to prevent them from turning brown quickly . I diced the avocado and then just roughly chopped the larger basil leaves . Then add it to the salad bowl.
    • Add the dressing: Finally, add the olive oil, balsamic , and salt and pepper and toss gently to thoroughly combine.

How Long To Reduce Balsamic Vinegar

Tomato, Olive, and Mozzarella Salad with Basil Vinaigrette Recipe ...

I had to make this a separate answer, how long to reduce balsamic vinegar because it can be a little tricky. It often takes about 30 minutes, but depending on how much you are reducing and how high the heat is you could do it in just 10 minutes as well. The important part is not how long to reduce it, its how to watch it. Notice where the vinegar hits on the side of the pan when you pour it in and keep an eye on how it reduces down.

    Substituting Cherry And Grape Tomatoes

In most recipes cherry and grape tomatoes are interchangeable, though there are some subtle differences. Cherry tomatoes can range in size from quite small to golf ball size. Grape tomatoes are usually smaller and less sweet than cherry tomatoes. Grape tomatoes are also meatier, with a thicker skin.

Cut the tomatoes in half for this salad, or even in quarters if your cherry tomatoes are on the larger side. You could also use full sized tomatoes, just cut them into 1-inch cubes. You can also cut this recipe in half it makes a lot and serves 8, which might not be what you need.

    Tomato Basil Mozzarella Salad

    By Alice Currah

2011 has been a roller coaster of a year for my family and I, one I wish I could have stepped off of before the year began. The year started as a blur, my mind in a complete fog. We buried dad New Years Eve and the following months would prove to challenge me in unexpected ways which Im still dealing with and slowly processing. Mom moved into our cozy home, a home my husband and I bought eleven years ago. When we bought this place it was a complete fixer, pink bathroom tile included. It was a sellers housing market back then and even the dumpiest of homes commanded premium dollars. But we were newly married with a determined vision. Together, we would roll up our sleeves and work on remodeling our house one room every year as our budget allowed. The sweat equity would eventually pay off as years went by. All my cake decorating experience would serve me well when it came to smoothing out drywall puddy. As a contractor friend once told me, if you can frost a cake smooth, smoothing drywall will be a cinch for you.

The simplest version of mozzarella tomato basil salad is simply olive oil and salt. Again, quality matters, so use the highest in quality olive oil that you can. Olive oils vary widely, so try to find one that fits your budget that you also like the flavor of. Or you can, drizzle with some homemade balsamic reduction. Heres are some notes about topping with a reduction:

    • It adds a tangy pop. Balsamic drizzle steps up all the flavors a notch!
    • Get store bought, or make at home. To make homemade balsamic reduction, you simply simmer balsamic reduction for about 10 to 15 minutes until it reduces in about half and makes a syrupy drizzle. Dressing For Caprese Salad

The Dressing that everybody thinks of as Caprese Salad Dressing is a balsamic glaze, also known as balsamic reduction. It has an intense sweet-tangy flavour so you do not need very much of it just a drizzle otherwise it will overwhelm the salad.

So we need second Dressing for Caprese Salad to provide more flavour that we can toss through the whole salad before drizzling with the balsamic glaze. Many recipes just use plain olive oil, but I prefer to use a simple garlic-herb vinaigrette because it has more flavour, I like the look of the little specks and also, its healthier .

While balsamic reduction is quite simple to make , Ive used store bought here. Its not that expensive, and it has a shelf life of years and years!
