Best For Foodies And Ww Followers: Blue Apron
The OG meal kit, Blue Apron burst onto the scene in 2012 and started a trend. What still tends to set Blue Apron apart is its innovative meal options. From Pork Lo Mein to Caribbean Spiced Chicken Thighs, the seasonal-based menu is diverse to say the least.
The company has also partnered with WW to offer six point-calculated meals that range from 0 to 15 SmartPoints.
To maximize the health benefits of a meal kit, Cassetty recommends keeping an eye on the portion sizes. “Since starchy carbs are often a less-expensive component of a meal kit, you might find the portion exceeds your needs,” she says.
Delivery options: Choose two to four meals per week for two or four people. The “Wellness for 2” kit includes carb-conscious and WW-approved meals .

With salads you might be eating hidden calories in the dressing. Just because it is a salad, it does not automatically mean it is low in calories. There can be some ingredients that are high in calories . For weight loss eating healthy alone will not be enough if you are still eating too many calories.

How To Choose A Protein
Consider the salads theme
The first thing you need to do is think about the cultural or regional flavor profile the salad company had in mind when they created the blend. Some of our most popular salad kits fuse flavors from around the world with new, out-of-the-box ingredients, Taleyarkahn says. This gives you a direction to start riffing in.
It can be as easy as simple word association the clues are often right in the flavor name. For example, Southwestern Cheddar, Mediterranean Crunch, Italian Balsamic these all allude to a very specific type of cuisine, which should lead your mind to a natural accompaniment.
Stop and think, whats the first food item you picture when you go to that kind of restaurant? Which ingredients in that dish are your favorites? From here, you can let your imagination run wild with the characteristic flavors as your guide.
Generic Eastern-inspired flavors pair well with teriyaki baked tofu or chicken. More regional ones work well by marinating chicken in a satay seasoning or pork in lemongrass, and grilling it as a topper.
Mexican-inspired blends can be topped with black beans, adobo-dusted grilled chicken, popcorn shrimp, or taco-seasoned turkey or ground beef crumbles. Maybe even roasted peppers and onions for good measure to make it a warm salad. Add in a bit of seasoned rice, top with a dollop of creamy, naturally high-protein Fagein lieu of sour cream, and you have yourself a burrito bowl-salad hybrid set to satisfy.

Meal Prep Roasted Mushrooms
Roasted mushrooms bring a delicious umami flavor to any dish and can easily stand in for meat in lots of recipes. So having a big batch on hand gives you freedom to riff all week. Don’t worry about overcrowding the pan. As the mushrooms cook, they will release all their water, shrink and then finally crisp up in the olive oil. To keep this recipe versatile, we seasoned with only salt and pepper — but chopped garlic or shallots and fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary are delicious additions.

Fresh Express Chopped Kit: Sunflower Crisp
This salad from Fresh Express has the expected ingredients of green and red cabbage, romaine, kale, carrots, onion vinaigrette, and sunflower seeds. It swaps out the bacon for some shredded sharp Romano cheese blend, though, and there is a lot of vegetarian-friendly, nutrient-rich edamame, both of which played surprisingly well with one another. There is also the addition of toasted quinoa to the little baggie with the latter two crunchy ingredients, but honestly, this was a pretty pointless addition and did nothing for the salad nutritionally or flavorwise. On the other hand, the edamame was an assertive newcomer, deeply toasted, salty, meaty, and with a robust earthiness that was pleasantly surprising. Extremely crunchy, it took longer to chew which is better for satiety and made this feel most like an entrée salad.
The downside of all this is that the top-billed ingredient, the sunflower seeds, became a shrinking violet, underrepresented in quantity and flavor. The edamame’s greatest match was the thick dressingthe only one of the batch to have actual onion pieces in it. It sadly wasn’t viscous enough to hold the edamame suspended in the toss , but it sure was delicious. Tangy with the flavor of real onions as opposed to the more subtle onion powder, it at least hugged the greens well.

Worst: Crispy Chicken Salad
A green salad with chicken may sound like a healthy meal, but descriptions like crispy and crunchy are red flags. These words are code for breaded and deep-fried, which can turn that healthy-sounding salad into a calorie bomb. Whats worse, research shows that eating a lot of fried foods can raise your chances of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
Copycat Homemade Salad Kits
Weve all purchased the pre-made salads from our grocery store. Either the bagged salad kits, or a pre-made container of salad in the deli section. We do this not because it tastes better than making a salad ourselves, but because its convenient!
Heres the segment I recorded for our local TV station, Studio 5!
If your goal is to eat more veggies, pre-made salad kits are the way to make it happen. When we prep food to make it easy and convenient, we are more likely to eat healthier!
So, I headed to the grocery store, and I took a photo of every single salad kit they had. I wanted to see the ingredients and copy them at home. These are some of the salads I copied:
Then, I decided to copy the salads I saw at the store and portion all the salad toppings in their own containers. Then, keep on hand an extra large container of greens. That way, eating a salad every day can be super convenient. Plus, they are packaged perfectly for taking on the go!

Gochujang Chop Salad Kit
This Korean-style salad is full of amazing flavors, but the gochujang vinaigrette holds a special place in our hearts. This salad would pair perfectly with our Korean Turkey Burgers with Kimchi.

Worst: Salad With Fat
So, go with a low-calorie, fat-free dressing, right? Think again. To make up for flavor, theyre often loaded with extra sugar and sodium. Fat makes salads tastier and healthier. Your body needs it to take in and use certain vitamins, like A, D, E, and K. One study found that people got fewer antioxidants called carotenoids when they ate salads with fat-free dressing, compared with reduced- or full-fat dressing.
Worst: Salads With Mayonnaise
The word “salad” in the name doesn’t make it a healthy choice. Tuna, lean chicken, and boiled eggs can be good sources of protein, but that benefit is canceled out if you drown them in mayo, which is loaded with fat, salt, and calories. For a healthier version, use a small amount of light mayonnaise and some fat-free sour cream or plain yogurt. And a bit of mustard — which has no fat or sugar — can kick it up a notch.

Pro Tip #1 Add More Produce
Once the innards are removed from the main compartment of the salad kit, the remaining lettuce and greens are quite wimpy in my opinion.
If you are like me and prefer to belly up to a salad the size of a semi, my first suggestion is to add more greens. Whatever suits your fancy. My favorite additions are baby spinach, coleslaw mix, or shredded angel hair cabbage which adds extra crunch.

Wilting Before Your Eyes
Pre-packaged salad leaves can stay looking fresh for 5 days in the fridge. However, appearances can be deceptive as the moment something is picked it begins to lose nutritional value.
In some foods, the nutrients can stay around for months like apples and carrots. Others like thin delicate salad leaves once separated individually lose a significant amount of nutrients every hour after being picked.
Pre-bagged salads are packaged along with a mixture of gasses known as modified atmosphere. This keeps them looking fresh and giving a shelf life of up to a week.
If you check the back of a packet of leaves it will say something like packaged in a protective atmosphere. While that sounds nice and helps keep the leaves looking great it doesnt protect the nutrients.
Once you open a salad bag the leaves often wilt very quickly, this is a true indication of just how much nutrition remains.
People think a few salad leaves on their plate is healthy, whereas it can be more damaging for people to think they are getting nutrition when theres next to no value in lots of prebagged salads. Only dark green leaves, like rocket or spinach, contain any notable amounts of nutrition.
Its nice to think when something is prewashed its done exactly as you would at home. With fresh water for a few seconds. However the reality is factories that make salad leaves dunk them in an industrial bath of water mixed with chlorine that isnt changed for hours.

Our thoughts: Holy jalapeño! If you like heat, this salad is for you. The veggies were chopped into a nice size and remained fresh and crunchy. The diced cheese was different from the shreds you normally find in most salad kits. The fried jalapeño slices deliver the spice, and provide an additional crunch to the included taco strips.

Meal Prep Steamed Vegetables
When it comes to prepping for the week ahead, we love cooking off lots of veggies so we can reach for them instead of something less healthy in the scramble of making a weeknight meal. Blanching a vegetable in boiling water and then plunging it in an ice bath is great when you’re making just one kind. But for a large-scale production, our go-to method is steaming. You can use the same water for multiple batches, steaming one vegetable after the next. The result: a rainbow of perfectly cooked vegetables at the ready for grain bowls, pastas, salads, frittatas and more.

Three Top Weight Loss Meals
Now that youve read through the list of the 12 best foods for weight loss, lets discuss how to combine them into meals that aid your fast weight loss experience. The trick is to create meals with a variety of nutrients while keeping carbs and calorie counts low and fiber content high.
Meal idea #1: Oatmeal With Berries And Yogurt
Hot oatmeal is an ideal breakfast food during cold winter months, and overnight oatmeal dishes are great any time of the year. Combining oatmeal with yogurt brings a full prebiotic and probiotic profile to the day. Adding berries brings in vitamins, minerals, and weight-loss supporting anthocyanins.
Meal idea #2: Black Bean Soup
Black bean soup combines the fiber, vitamin, and mineral content of beans with the mineral and protein content of chicken. This dish usually includes rice and corn. However, you can make a lower-carb version by omitting those ingredients or switching them out for a high-protein, low-carb alternative such as quinoa.
Meal idea #3: Meat And Vegetable Skewers With Cabbage Salad And Walnuts
This meal is one of my favorites. It combines the high protein qualities of lean meat with fiber, vitamins, and minerals from cabbage and walnuts. The bell peppers in the skewers provide fiber and vitamin C, too.

Healthy Salad Hint #4
A single serving of protein is usually about 3 to 4 ounces. If you add a large 6 to 8 ounce piece of chicken breast you’ll need to account for the extra calories that you add. Adding more protein typically means adding more salad dressing, which will also boost the calorie and fat content of your salad.

If you’re sick of throwing away another container of spinach at the end of the week because you didn’t know what to do with it, you’re not alone! We can have every intention to load up on more veggies on our weekly grocery run, only to toss out limp greens, peppers, and cucumbers before the next trip rolls around. That’s why we love prepackaged salad kits!
“Salad kits and mixes can be a really tasty and convenient way to eat more vegetables,” says Lisa Valente, M.S., R.D., Nutrition Editor at EatingWell and CookingLight.com. “Serve them as part of a meal or enjoy them on their own, depending on how many substantial components are included. But, some dressings and toppings in these kits can have a fair amount of sugar and sodium. A quick flip of the bag to look at the nutrition facts panel will let you know what you’re getting.”
We raided the Trader Joe’s produce section to find the healthiest salad kits and help you and your family get in your daily dose of greens. These salads were deemed “healthy” based on sodium, sugar, and saturated fat content, plus their ratios of indulgent-to-healthy toppings.
