How We Picked And Tested

OXO Salad Spinner

People use their salad spinners to wash and/or dry all sorts of things: lettuce, berries, spinach, herbs, bathing suits , so its important that a salad spinner be easy to use. Spinners come with either a handle at the top, a pump, or a string to turn the inside basket. That mechanism should work smoothly and shouldnt require too much effort, or your arm may get sore. We found pull-cord-based models, like the Zyliss Easy Spin, to be lacking. User reviews are consistently low and our own editorial teams experience with this style convinced us that the cords are ultimately too fussy to use and, more important, hard to keep clean. Our experts agreed with us. I do not like the ones with the pull string, says Jennifer Chandler. I feel like its waiting for something to break. Georgeanne Brennan agrees, saying, I do like the crank and not the cord. With that decided, we kept to pump-action models, like the Good Grips, and handle-based models where you manually spin the bowl with a crank, ratchet, or rack-and-pinion system.

For our original guide, we soaked and spun one 10-ounce bag of adult spinach in each spinner six times. We weighed the spinach dry, after soaking, after three spins, and after six. Additionally, we washed and spun a pint of raspberries, checking for any bruising, as well as a bundle of dill to see which spinner baskets were most difficult to clean. Wobbliness and ease of use were also evaluated.

Who Should Get This

If you regularly eat salad and youre not taking advantage of a salad spinner, stop being silly and buy this sooner rather than later. A salad spinner will clean greens better than handwashing and with less mess and hassle. It will also dry your greens more efficiently, and the less water you have on your lettuce, the better your vinaigrette will stick.

If you already have a salad spinner and its getting your salad greens clean without too much trouble, theres no need to upset the status quo. But if youre using a small or cheap model, like the IKEA Tokig, consider upgrading. Youll be able to easily clean more greens at once.

Oxo Good Grips Mini Salad And Herb Spinner

Product number: 18047

Smaller than its larger counterpart, the OXO Good Grips Mini Salad and Herb Spinner is ideal for drying rinsed salad leaves and herbs for one or two people. Recently updated by OXO, the Mini Salad Spinner remains a kitchen essential.

With the same patented pump mechanism that makes salad prep so easy, OXO have given the bowl a flat top so its easier to store. They have also improved the brake and non-slip base, and as before, once your salad leaves are dry the crystal-clear bases can be used as a salad bowl.

These small tweaks ensure the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner remains the best weve found.

How the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner works

The one-handed action makes it easy for anyone to use, whatever their dexterity, and the clear lid and sides allow you to see whats going on inside. The wide non-slip base means its more stable than most salad spinners, and theres a brake button to stop the spinning basket when your salad leaves are dry.

Lifetime manufacturer’s guarantee.

How Do You Use A Salad Spinner

The answer to this will depend on the type of spinner you purchase, but as far as basics go, prepare your ingredients by chopping up vegetables, greens, fruits, or whatever you plan to wash and dry in the spinner. Place those ingredients in the basket and run cold water over the basket to thoroughly flush the dirt and debris. Place the basket in the work bowl and affix the lid. Start spinning via crank, plunge, pull-cord, or twist-knob, depending on your style of spinner. Stop once you see water in the bottom of the bowl with dirt or debris in it. Remove your ingredients and move to the next one.

Analysis And Test Results

Our lead tester identified five categories of importance to contrast performance and features between the ten spinners. The five metrics used were water removal, dirt removal, ease of spinning, ease of braking, and ease of cleaning. These factors helped to create a holistic appraisal and understanding of each product.

Why You Should Trust Us

Weve spent 25 hours researching dozens of salad spinners to find the best for testing. We consulted salad experts about their favorite models, speaking to cookbook authors Terry Hope Romero, author of Salad Samurai, Jennifer Chandler, author of Simply Salads, and Georgeanne Brennan, author of Salad of the Day for Williams-Sonoma. Their insight helped shape the criteria we established for testing, and each gave helpful salad-spinning tips. We also looked to reviews by Good Housekeeping, Cooks Illustrated , The Kitchn, the Wall Street Journal , and Epicurious, and considered well-loved models on sites like Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Sur la Table, Williams-Sonoma, and Macys.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

OXO Little Salad and Herb Spinner

There are very few flaws. The only consistent flaw in other editorial reviews is that its not particularly easy to store. Its a large salad spinnerits colander has a 5-quart capacity, and the bowl has a 6-quart capacityand the lid isnt completely flat, but its the only model we looked at that has a locking pump, making it the easiest to stack overall. But thats a small drawback were willing to deal with in light of its many, many excellent features.

We do wish it spun a little quicker, but as we learned in testing, it still does a great job drying greens and its more restrained RPM means its great at drying other things, too.

Last, its push mechanism does take up some room in the bowl, and we wish it could be allocated to whatever you want to put inside. But considering the machines large size, its not really necessarythe Good Grips is still very, very roomy.

The humble salad spinner may seem like an unnecessary kitchen tool, but we beg to differ. There are lots of reasons to keep this gadget in your cabinet. It’s revolutionary when it comes to yielding crispy, fresh greens, as the centrifugal force created by spinning draws the liquid from spinach, arugula, and more, warding off lingering moisture that might make your salad soggy or even moldy. It also provides optimal cleaning without much hands-on time. Sure, hand washing your greens will do the trick just fine, but a salad spinner will pull out dirt particles hidden in ribs and crevices.

The convenience of cleaning and prepping large quantities of greens, vegetables, and fruits cannot be understated. Many models even double as serving bowls and colanders. That collard green gratin just got a whole lot easier, and all the veggies in your antipasto salad can be drained, cleaned, and washed in the same container.

Here are the best salad spinners.

  • Grip on bottom discolors over time

  • Bulky to store

The Best Salad Spinner

  • Weve read through this guide and are still confident in all our picks.

After spending 25 hours on research, interviewing authors of salad-centered cookbooks, comparing 31 models, and testing eight side by side, we recommend the OXO Good Grips Salad Spinner. Its design is sturdier and more convenient to use than any other model we tested, with a wide, flat base and push-button brake. Its unique pump spinner was the easiest to operate, drying both hardy greens and more delicate parsley without bruising. The crystal-clear plastic bowl is big enough to soak a large head of lettuce, but still one of the most compact to store.

Our pick

The pump on the OXO makes it the easiest to use of all of the salad spinners we tested. It also stores better than similarly sized spinners.

Buying Options

The OXO Good Grips spinner has been our top pick since we originally published this review in 2014. Weve found it consistently easy to use and wash, and we like that it efficiently cleans and dries a variety of greens. We pitted the Good Grips against a few new models this year, but it still came out on top, with the most stable base we tested and one of the best brake mechanisms for slowing spinning.

Its pull-out handle isnt as operator friendly as the pump on the Good Grips, but this model cleans and dries greens well, and its brake is as easy to use as our winners.

The best solution is a top-notch spinner that gives your salad base a good wash and thorough dry.

Zyliss Swift Dry Salad Spinner

OXO Salad Spinner

Though the OXO won our hearts, the snazzy Zyliss Swift Dry Salad Spinner gave it a run for its money. While not feeling quite as sturdy as the OXO components, the dishwasher-safe Zyliss pieces were a close second in terms of quality construction. Also, the ridged strainer basketa tweak that is billed by the brand as “aquavent technology” to remove waterdid seem to work efficiently: after 30 seconds of spinning, we collected 3 1/2 tablespoons of excess water from the bottom of the bowl, just a tad less than the OXO, but still a very solid showing.

Like our top pick, the Zyliss also won points for its large capacity, stability, and easy one-handed operation. Though it requires a bit more elbow grease to get going than the OXO, the sturdy pop-up lever on the lid gets the basket moving quickly and vigorously, and the substantial rubber ring around the base keeps it steady on the counter without any need for bracing. And when it comes time for washing, the simple lid pops apart easily for a quick wipe downalleviating any worry about food or mildew building up in the crevices.

Other quibbles were mainly aesthetic: the bright green basket and accents on the lid are eye-catching but might not appeal to everyone and could make it less versatile as a sink-to-table vessel. Still, all in all, this is a great salad spinner, and if you want to give a relative newcomer a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

Dreamfarm Spina Colander And Salad Spinner

Best for small spaces

Cons:

  • no lid sends salad flying

At 21cm, the Dreamfarm is one of the smaller spinners on the test. It is cleverly designed to be a handled colander that flips into a spinner and is operated by pumping the central column, much like an old-fashioned spinning top. Unfortunately, there is no bowl, so you need to do this in the sink. Once dried, tip the leaves into a salad bowl to serve. Rinse the spinner to clean, and to store, the handle slips inside the bowl, all neat and tidy.

The Dreamfarm is sturdy for such a small spinner. It stands firmly on the worktop but does slip around a little without any non-slip material on the base. And, as theres no lid, once up to speed, lettuce leaves fly, so we had to pull back a little. Even so, the leaves were thoroughly dry and undamaged.

We found this is an excellent small salad spinner and perfect for small spaces.
