Tuna Salad: A Simple Pleasure

I have memories as a child sitting atop Mt. Chocorua in New Hampshire with my camp friends after a days climb. Lunch was always oranges and tuna or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And for dessert? Well, lets just say a Hershey bar never tasted so good!

And now, in these times, that sandwich brings just as much pleasure . Spare me the bells and whistles Ill get to them in a minute.

Right now, a classic tuna salad sandwich is all Im after. That means canned tuna, mayo, celery, lemon juice, and if you like, red onion. Period. Slather it on some good bread and Im that happy camper again. In fact, Im taking my sandwich out to the back porch to eat in the sunshine.

Mince Your Tuna Salad’s Carrot And Celery

We’ve seen onion and celery in tuna salads before. But carrot? This unique and colorful touch adds something a little different to Epstein’s take on tuna salad. As she noted, “I chose carrot for this recipe because it adds a bit of crunch and sweetness to the dish.” She also explained this veggie’s role in balancing out this sandwich filling or salad topping. “Tuna salad is creamy and I find that a bit of crunch from celery and carrot helps wake it up a bit,” said Epstein.

What’s The Best Tuna To Use

Any can or jar of tuna will work in a sandwich. Just make sure you drain the water or oil before mixing with the ingredients for tuna salad.

I prefer using water-packed tuna in tuna salad, because Im already adding mayonnaise to the recipe. I save oil-packed tuna for dishes where the oil matters a bit more, such as in this Salad Nicoise, because oil-packed tuna is richer than water-packed tuna.

That being said, tuna salad is no time to get pickyjust use what you have on hand.

    Recipe Tips + Additions

How to make a Tuna Sandwich ( with Mayo )

Here are a few tips along with ideas to change it up.

    • Tuna: Use any type of tuna as long as it is packed in water. This will result in the best and freshest taste.
    • To avoid an overall mushy sandwich, consider spooning the tuna salad on toasted pieces of bread. That way the extra moisture from the tuna salad doesnt soak through the bread.
    • For a healthier version, use plain yogurt instead of sour cream and serve it in lettuce wraps rather than between pieces of bread. This will cut down on fat and carbs!
    • Or use mashed avocado instead of mayonnaise in order to use a healthier fat.

Additions: You can add dried fruit like cranberries, or for more crunch try adding chopped apples, celery, cucumbers, and/or red onion.

    Simple Tuna Salad Recipe

Tuna: We prefer to use canned tuna in water. You can also use tuna in olive oil. Make sure your tuna is wild caught. We like this brand. We used canned tuna with no salt added so you may need to add a pinch of salt. I havent tried this with canned salmon but I think it would work!

Greek Yogurt: We like to use plain non fat greek yogurt. You can use full fat greek yogurt or regular yogurt. We havent tried this with nondairy yogurt but I think it would work. Greek yogurt is a great mayonnaise substitute for tuna! If youre wondering what to put in tuna instead of mayo, you really cant tell the difference with greek yogurt!

Carrot/Celery: Feel free to add more or less carrot or celery. You can also omit them.

Dairy Free: I have not tried this with dairy free yogurt, but I think it would work. Make sure that your yogurt is unsweetened, plan yogurt.

Spices: We kept this recipe simple with pepper, onion powder and garlic powder. You could add other spices like dried or fresh parsley, red pepper flakes or whatever you like

Salt and Pepper Add to taste.

Greek Yogurt You can use full fat or low fat for this recipe. Both are tasty!

Dijon Mustard This is my secret ingredient to really delicious tuna salad.
