A recent study by the University of Toronto has found that many popular salad dressings contain unhealthy ingredients.

The study analyzed 34 different salad dressing brands and found that most were high in calories, sugar, fat, and sodium.

These include Krafts Catalina Dressing which is made with 23 grams of sugar per serving. This can be harmful to your health if you are trying to eat healthier or lose weight.

When it comes to burgers, most of the options at Wendys have American cheese. How many calories can you save by leaving the cheese off?

Lets figure it out.

Since we know the nutrition for a Jr. Hamburger as well as a Jr. Cheeseburger based on the graphic above, we can do some quick math to figure out the nutrition for the slice of cheese .

When you find the difference, youll see that one slice of American cheese at Wendys is 40 calories, 3g fat, 1g carb, and 2g protein.

If you want to go for a Daves Triple, which has 3 slices of cheese, you can save yourself 120 calories & 9g fat by asking for no cheese.

That monster of a burger still would have nearly 1,000 calories, but Im not judging.

And while its tough to say exactly how many calories are added by condiments, we can always estimate how many there are.

But if you want to definitively save some calories, ask for condiments on the side!

Something like mustard wont be adding a ton of calories, but mayo can end up adding 100s of calories to your burger. Asking for it on the side allows you to control how much youre using, but you can of course just leave it off altogether.

Ive always wondered what the best salad dressing to use at Wendys is. I finally decided to find out.

On my next trip through the drive-thru window, I tried their three dressings, ranch, honey mustard, and blue cheese. The first thing I noticed was that all three of them were a little too sweet for me.

However, if you love a tangy salad dressing, go with either the honey mustard or blue cheese varieties because they have a good mix of both flavors and dont have as much sugar in them as ranch does.

Wendy’s Southwest Avocado Salad Copycat Recipe

You may have heard cautionary tales about some fast food salads that end up containing more calories than cheeseburgers that are offered the same menu. Well, this is decidedly not one of those situations. According to Wendy’s nutrition information page, the Southwest Avocado Salad itself contains 420 calories, in addition to 140 calories in the packet of dressing that comes with it. That’s 560 calories all told, which is not bad at all. In fact, in other words, it’s a perfect light lunch.

“I would say this is a complete meal,” says chef, recipe developer, and registered dietician Kristen Carli of Camelback Nutrition & Wellness, adding, “It is delicious.” And the salad will taste even better when you make a copycat of the Wendy’s original at home with the freshness of the ingredients you will have at your disposal, as well as the chance for you to customize the dish a bit. And if you don’t like things spicy, for example, that’s absolutely no problem at all, because as Carli says, “It would be delicious with a little less heat. I would omit or take down the jalapeño liquid for a slightly milder taste in the dressing.”

And if you want to make it even more of a delicious meal in a bowl, why not add some tortilla chips or even a bed of rice?

    I have been focused on eating more salads this summer. Its part of my effort to eat better and incorporate more vegetables into my diet. Recently I teamed up with Wendys to learn about their salads and I was seriously impressed. Its easy to be skeptical of salads from a fast food restaurant, but these salads are made with the same ingredients I use at home: fresh green lettuce, sliced vegetables, cheese, nuts, grilled chicken, and delicious Marzetti salad dressings.

    Last week I went to Wendys with my friend Shaheen and we got a behind the scenes look at how Wendys salads are made. The staff at Wendys showed us how they hand wash and hand chop the lettuce, fruits, and vegetables each morning. The salads are actually prepped twice a day, in the morning before lunch, and in the afternoon before dinner. Shaheen and I even learned a better way to wash strawberries they place them in a container with water and lightly shake the container to remove the dirt. It is far more effective than just sticking the container of strawberries under running water, which had been the technique we both used at home.

    After some quick training, we got to try our hand at making our own Strawberry Mango Chicken Salads.

    First, we put a few handfuls of fresh mixed lettuce in a bowl, and then we added crumbled feta cheese, diced mango, and sliced strawberries.

    If youre looking to maximize your protein with the fewest calories, a side of chicken nuggets will likely suit you well.

    If you were to order a 6 piece chicken nugget for your side, youd be looking at 270 calories and 15g of protein.

    However, an option that is surprisingly more appealing is the side of chili. A small cup of chili has only 240 calories and 16g of protein, which may be more appealing to you than the chicken nuggets!

    And if youre looking for a filling side a baked potato may be a great option for you. While you can top it with a wide variety of options, a basic baked potato has roughly the same amount of calories as a small fry, but Im willing to bet will fill you up way more.

    Wendys Old-Fashioned Hamburgers has five salads available on its menu. They are entree sizes large enough to count as a meal. The types of salads change from year to year, giving customers a chance to try something new. Wendys uses flavorful Marzetti dressings to top them off.

    It helps me to use less dressing while still feeling like Im getting plenty of flavor. Its one of my go-to moves to save some calories whenever I eat out at a restaurant.

    If you want to use dressing, I have nothing against it! At around 150 calories, using a packet of dressing is surely not going to ruin your diet. That being said, a little goes a long way. Even if you use half of the dressing packet, youll save around 70-80 calories, which can add up over time.

    Depending on the type of salad you get, you can also use alternatives for dressing. My go-to is always a Southwest salad wherever I go, and instead of salad dressing, Ill use hot sauce or salsa! The caloric impact is very minimal, and the flavor is even better than a salad dressing in my eyes!
