How To Make Pasta Salad With Italian Dressing
Step 1 Cook pasta Add salt to a large pot of cold water and bring to a boil. Add pasta and cook according to package instructions. Make sure you cook the pasta to al dente so that it holds up in the salad.
Once the pasta has cooked, drain the water and place the pasta in a large bowl.
Step 2 Add other ingredients Add all other pasta salad ingredients, 3/4 cup of the Italian dressing, and toss together.
Step 3 Set and serve Cover and place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to let the flavors meld together. Before serving pour 1/4 cup of dressing over the salad and toss together. What Do You Put In Your Pasta Salad
Ahhhâ¦Pasta salad. No two are alike. Iâve had some with fusilli, bowtie, macaroni, penne. With oil, with potatoes, olives, dill, capers, tomatoes, garbonzo beansâ¦So many different variations of one of my favorite things. I make mine with orzo, red onions, orange bell pepper, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives, italian parsley, a bit of mint, lots and lots of feta, and greek vinagrette. I love it. What do you like in yours?
How To Make The Best Orzo Pasta Salad
I know its saying a lot to call this the best orzo salad, but every time we have served this to a crowd, it is the first thing to go! Weve got a total winner here.
It couldnt be simpler. Start by cooking the orzo since its small it takes less than 10 minutes. While it cooks, get the rest of the salad ready. I like to make the lemon vinaigrette in the bottom of a big bowl so I can build the salad right on top of it.
The dressing is dairy-free, which makes this pasta salad perfect for picnics or warm weather. Its got a magical combination of olive oil, mustard, fresh lemon and a touch of honey to balance everything out.
When the orzo is cooked, drain it then throw it still hot straight into the vinaigrette. Since we add the pasta warm, it absorbs all the flavors of the lemony dressing.
The final step is to add your favorite vegetables and ingredients. We love cucumber and tomato, so thats a must for us. Were also partial to throwing in lots of fresh herbs. This time, we used lots of chopped fresh mint, but you can play around with your favorite herbs. Parsley, cilantro, dill and basil are all excellent options. In the photo above, you can see we added olives and artichokes. Both are excellent in the pasta salad.
Overcooking Or Undercooking The Pasta
Pasta is the star of this dish, so its important to make sure its cooked just right. Leave it on the stove too long and youll find yourself with mushy pasta take it off too soon, and the noodles are too tough.
An important thing to remember about pasta is that it hardens and gets chewy as it cools. Since its not being served hot or with sauce, the pasta benefits from an extra minute of cooking, but dont let it get mushy.
Follow this tip: For a well-cooked pasta salad, plan to cook the pasta until just past al dente. Adding an extra minute or so of cook time will keep the pasta soft while it cools.

The following are some of my favorite pasta salad toppings: Salami with a kick of heat. Cheeses that are delicious. Tomatoes or some other non-threatening vegetable that is nice to you. When In Doubt Swap It Out
You are limited only by your creativity when it comes to riffing on this dish. Dont have orecchiette? Try fusilli or gemelli. Instead of mozzarella, try cutting small chunks of provolone or Monterey Jack. Swap in whatever you love, whether that means snap peas, cucumbers, or rainbow chard for the vegetables.
Put your extra herbs to work and add some mint or parsley. Play with different acids such as white wine vinegar or balsamic. Try adding a can of chickpeas or cannellini beans to boost the protein for a more filling meal. Swap in different olives like castelvetranoor another briney ingredient, like capers. Be bold and willing to experiment!

Dressing Your Pasta Salad Twice
The secret to making delicious pasta salad in advance is to dress it twice. The first time should be when the pasta is still warm so it can easily absorb the dressing. Only add about half of the amount of dressing you usually would and think of it as a marinade. The pasta, vegetables, and cheeses get time to absorb the dressing and take on additional flavor. They absorb the seasoning from the dressing, ensuring every bite is as flavorful as possible.
The second time you dress it should be right before you serve the salad. Think of this as your final dressing step, adding moisture, shine, and an additional layer of flavor. At this point the pasta salad will have absorbed all of the dressing from the first time you dressed it, so it desperately needs more. This prevents it from being dry and flavorless and gives it a big, bold flavor making it taste as fresh as the first day you made it. It might seem like a waste of time to dress it twice, but its truly worth the extra effort. Trust me.
Can I Use Store Bought Dressing Instead
We always recommend making homemade dressing when you can. Its such an easy yet meaningful addition to any salad recipe. But, we also know that you may not always have time to make it or are perhaps missing a few key ingredients. In that case, opt for your favorite bottled Italian dressing. Youll find several varieties at the grocery store.

What About A Pasta Salad Dressing
Thank you for your inquiry. This is quite crucial. Were in desperate need of a zesty Italian dressing. Using a blender or food processor, it takes around 60 seconds to make it from scratch. You prepared that dressing, you are the pasta salad king or queen. The final step is to Toss everything together, taste, and adjust as needed, and use every self-control muscle in your body to avoid devouring the entire dish before everyone arrives at the party. Id want to provide one more piece of advise.
This is the perfect supper for a busy weeknight.
Cook some spaghetti, put it all together, and youve got yourself a meal.
Ill be there in a jiffy, promise.
Season The Pasta Right Away
The first thing you want to do is to season your pasta right away. This is also true to other kinds of pasta, so you might want to note this one down. Put salt into the water that you will be using to cook your pasta, and the salted water will do its job of seasoning the past from the inside and the outside. The reason behind this is for your chosen pasta to start building flavor, which comes from the salt you just put earlier on. Its a technique that most inexperienced people forget, so their pasta tends to get boring and tasteless. Dont let this happen to you and try our recommendation.

When it comes to making a cold, creamy pasta salad, keep these tips in mind:
- Dont overcook the pasta. Use the package directions of the pasta you choose as a guide, but a minute or two before it should be done, test it. If done, drain the pasta and move onto our next tip.
- Rinse the cooked pasta under cold water before tossing with the salad dressing. If youve ever made pasta salad that turned sticky, not rinsing the pasta before tossing with the dressing could be the reason. The cooked pasta is coated in starches. By removing the starches, the salad wont turn sticky or clump as much.
- Choose lots of colorful veggies and textures to add to the salad. Its just better this way.
- Use a bright and flavorful salad dressing. Since the base of our dressing is creamy, we love brightening it up with some acid from vinegar and mustard. If you love sweeter salads, you can add a bit of honey, as well.
Tips For Making The Perfect Italian Pasta Salad
Dont over cook the pasta. It is important to not over cook the pasta. Cook just until al dente and then drain them and then cool the pasta while in the strainer with cold water until all of the pasta is cooled. This will prevent a soggy pasta salad.
Cool the pasta completely. Just like over cooking pasta will give you a mushy pasta salad, so will noodles that are not cooled all the way. As soon as they are done cooking you want to shock the pasta with cold water to stop the cooking process.
Chop the veggies small. Pasta salad is best when the veggies and meat if you are adding any are chopped small. This gives more veggies and more flavor in each bite of this pasta salad with Italian Dressing.
Let pasta salad sit before serving. You can serve this pasta salad immediately after making it however I find pasta salad is best when it has time to sit in the fridge and all of the flavors are able to mix together. Letting the pasta salad sit for a few hours before serving results in a more flavorful and delicious Italian pasta salad!
