What Kind Of Dressing Works With Spring Mix Salad

One thing to keep in mind with any spring mix salad recipe is that the greens are generally pretty fragile. To avoid overpowering them, a light vinaigrette dressing works best. I opted for a blueberry vinaigrette for this one. With blueberries in both the dressing and the salad itself, its light and sweet and fruity!

Classic Bread Stuffing Recipe

Ready-to-go salad mixes are all the rage these days, judging by the amount of shelf space devoted to them in supermarket produce sections. One of these popular mixes is mesclun, also known as spring mix or mixed baby greens. This blend contains 10 or more varieties of tender, young lettuces and other greens, some of which may be familiar to you and others that probably arent. So for all you curious types who have been wondering which leaf is the Lollo Rossa and which is the Tango, heres a little guide to some of the greens youre likely to encounter in a bag of spring mix.

What Is In Spring Mix

I love to eat spring mix salad since it has more variety than plain old romaine lettuce, which is my second choice. It usually has a mixture of baby romaine, baby mustard, red oak leaf, arugula, and other assorted varieties of greens. The greens are picked when they are young, meaning they are tender, delicate, and mild.

You can pair just about anything with spring mix. But for this Spring Mix Salad, we wanted it to be incredibly simple with ingredients you might already have on hand. Heres what youll need:

  • Spring mix: Of course! Again, pair with another green like romaine to round out the flavors and textures, if you prefer
  • Onion or shallot: Use shallot for a delicate flavor, or red onion for a more bold choice! To round out the spicy flavor, you can soak it in cold water while you prepare the rest of the salad.
  • Carrot: Carrots are stable for weeks, and theyre great in salads. Peel them into long ribbons for an interesting texture!
  • Feta cheese: Salty cheese takes a salad from blah to irresistible! Substitute goat cheese or Parmesan shavings.
  • Chopped nuts: Use whatever you have on hand: good choices are pecans, walnuts, pistachios or almonds
  • Sliced apple : Add a pop of sweet with a sliced or diced apple!

How To Make Homemade Creamy Balsamic Salad Dressing

My favorite salad dressing to pair with this Spring Mix Salad is easily my creamy balsamic dressing. Its super easy to make, comes together with just a few shakes of a jar, and tastes insanely delicious. This homemade salad dressing is made with simple ingredients that you probably already have laying around: plain Greek yogurt, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, honey, salt, and pepper.

If you have the ingredients and literally one minute to spare, I highly recommend making this dressing. If its not a possibility, feel free to swap it out for any kind of salad dressing you like. Consider using this Honey Mustard Dressing, Yogurt Blue Cheese Dressing, or Jalapeno Ranch.

Fresh Express Among 10 Salad Brands Recalled Over Listeria Risk

Fresh Express is recalling 10 brands of salad mixes sold in 19 states after listeria was found in a sample test of one of the products.

The meal-kit provider’s recall involves Fresh Express and private-label salad products produced at its plant in Streamwood, Illinois, Fresh Express announced Monday.

Listeria can cause serious and, at times, fatal infections in the young, elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. An estimated 1,600 Americans get listeriosis each year, and about 260 die, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The potentially tainted products were sold by retailers in 19 states in the Northeast and Midwest, as well as in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Manitoba. The U.S. states include: Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

The recall includes all use-by dates of fresh salad items with product codes Z324 through Z350. Product codes can be found on the front of packages below the use-by date.

The Ultimate Ginger Lime Dressing

Now let’s talk dressing. I love making dressings at home and usually have at least 2 in rotation at all times. Our go-to is Matt’s Shallot Dressing and is what we put on pretty much everything, but this salad felt like it needed something a little different. Something with some zing. With some spice. With a little sweetness mixed in.

And I came up with the most delicious ginger-lime dressing! Even better is that it’s only 6 ingredients!

  • Olive oil
  • Tamari
  • Lime juice

It’s perfectly salty, has a touch of sweetness, is tart, bright and adds just the right amount of zing!

  • May Support A Healthy Pregnancy

Spring mix also provides several essential nutrients required for a healthy pregnancy. A study that enrolled 374 pregnant women from eight health centers in Ethiopia indicated that poor or inconsistent intakes of dark leafy greens, dairy, and fruit produced higher risks of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as preterm birth, low birth weight, and stillbirth. It appears dark leafy greens may play a role in healthy pregnancies.

Spring mix also contains 15% of the daily recommended intake of folate. Folate has a well-established role in preventing birth defects early in pregnancy. The range of additional micronutrients in spring mix supports fetal development and healthy gestational weight gain.

Substitution Ideas For Our Spring Mix Salad

One of my goals, when I share my recipes, is to help you make them your own if you don’t have the exact ingredients. So I love to be able to give you substitution ideas when I can. This spring mix salad is a perfect example of recipe that you can totally customize based on what you have on hand. Here are some of my ideas:

    • Spring mix: if you can’t find spring mix, any green will work! You could do kale, arugula, spinach, romaine, or anything else you love.
    • Apple: if you can’t find green apple, a red apple would work, but you could also use peach, nectarine, or pear.
    • Blueberries: I think blueberries work really well with this salad but strawberries would be good, chopped cherries, or even dried fruit!
    • Crispy Chickpeas: the chickpeas are here mainly for protein, so I think you could really swap them with whatever protein you’d like. Maybe grilled chicken, grilled shrimp, baked tofu, etc.!
    • Mint: feel free to swap the mint with whatever fresh herbs you’d like basil, parsley, chives or even cilantro!
    • Pistachios: again, pistachios can be swapped with whatever nut or seed you’d like!

And for the dressing, I think this lemon-basil vinaigrette would be DELICIOUS! I hope you love this salad and enjoy it all season long.

Did You Knowcalifornia Lettuce Farmers Are Required To Have Traceback Systems In Place

Geoffrey Zakarian’s Spring Radish Salad | The Kitchen | Food Network

If a lettuce or leafy greens product is suspected of causing people to become ill, it may be necessary to remove it from marketing channels. Lettuce farmers in California and Arizona ship approximately 130 million servings of leafy greens every day to stores and restaurants throughout the U.S. and Canada. This makes it a very large undertaking to trace and recall products when there is a need.

Thats why lettuce farmers who are members of the Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement are required to have a traceback system in place. Under the LGMA food safety program, farmers must keep track of the exact field where all the lettuce they ship was grown and then be able to trace it to the first customer who receives it.

In a 2020 survey, LGMA members reported they are able to track product from the field where it was grown to this first customer in less than 2 hours. This is a critically important step in the supply chain. But unfortunately, its not always possible to track product all the way to the consumer who eventually eats it because the U.S. produce industry is complicated and involves many handlers, wholesalers, brokers, stores and restaurants before it gets to your table.
