Support Your Weight Loss Goals In A Healthy Way By Choosing Salad Dressings That Limit Calories Added Sugar And Sodium

Salads make a healthy foundation for any diet, but its all too easy to make a bowl of greens sugar- and salt-laden with the wrong toppings. At the same time, to support this healthy meal habit, you want choices that tantalize your taste buds, says Judy Caplan, RD, author of GoBeFull: Eight Keys to Healthy Living, who is in private practice in Vienna, Virginia.

Although its always the best option to whip up healthy salad dressings at home from vinegar, herbs, and a healthy oil, it is also easy enough to find a healthy, tasty store-bought kind if you read the nutritional facts label carefully.

First off, lets talk fat. Its not the enemy! The truth is, the body needs fat to function, and there are several fats used in the best salad dressings that provide amazing health benefits, including:

Monounsaturated Fatty Acids These are found in olive, canola, and peanut oil, as well as in avocados and most nuts, according to the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.

Polyunsaturated Fats These are found in other plant-based oils, like safflower, corn, sunflower, soybean, sesame, and cottonseed oils, notes Harvard. Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fats that are necessary for proper cell function, according to the National Institutes of Health .

Heres what else to keep in mind:

How Yogurt Can Help You Lose Weight

How to Make Lemon Yogurt Low Fat Salad Dressing Recipe

“While no one food is responsible for weight loss, yogurt can be a great addition to a balanced diet that can ultimately help you lose weight,” says Elizabeth Matchett, RDN, CD, and Nutrition Coach at NapTown Fitness.

There are multiple different ways that eating yogurt contributes to weight loss:

  • It’s rich in satiating macronutrients. “Yogurt is high in protein and can be low in fat, but it is still a good source of energy and can keep you full and satisfied,” says Matchett. Greek yogurt, in particular, is great for weight loss due to its high protein content. Eating protein-rich Greek yogurt helps to control appetite, which leads to consuming fewer calories later on, according to a study published in Nutrition Journal.
  • Yogurt is one of the best probiotic foods. The fermented dairy product also contains probiotics that help foster a healthy gut, which research shows can encourage weight loss and fat loss.
  • You can use yogurt as a nutrient-dense substitute for high-calorie ingredients. “Yogurt can also aid in weight loss as it is often replacing other high-calorie meals, such as a buttery bagel for breakfast. Whether decked out in a parfait, substituted for heavy cream in a sauce or whipped into salad dressings, yogurt is the perfect low-calorie substitute to jazz up your favorite dish and cut the calories!” dietitian Bonnie Balk, RD, a Health & Wellness Expert for Maple Holistics tells Eat This, Not That!

Siggi’s Icelandic Style Strained Non

Not just great-tasting, Siggi’s is one of the lowest-sugar vanilla yogurts on the market. “With just 9 grams of sugar, it barely has any added sugars, as yogurt itself naturally contains about 6 grams. As opposed to most other vanilla-flavored Greek yogurts, with about 15-20 grams per serving, a moderate 9 grams of sugar in Siggi’s is the winner,” says Balk. The Icelandic yogurt is strained more than Greek varieties, which also ups the protein content.

Yoplait Original French Vanilla

How To Make a Basic Yogurt Dressing

It’s not the healthiest yogurt, and it’s not even our second pick , but this is your best option if you’re a die-hard traditional Yoplait yogurt fan. Their Original French Vanilla has reasonable calorie, fat, and protein counts. However, because it is still fairly high in sugar, don’t rely on this container to keep you full all morning. To counteract the high sugar count, we recommend pairing it with digestion-slowing, high-fiber chia seeds.

These Are Very Very Good

Healthy has a bad reputation for meaning bland. Theres no denying that when you strip fat out of salad dressings, you lose a certain element of creaminess on your palette as you munch through a pile of crunchy greens.

But by using a good, thick yogurt in place of mayonnaise and adjusting seasonings to compensate for the loss of fat in the dressings, you can still make very, very good creamy dressings that you can use generously on your salads. I use these dressings far more frequently in day to day life than I do mayonnaise based ones.

Id really love to know what you think if you try any of them! Nagi x
