Why Is It Called Cobb Salad
There are a couple of theories as to how the Cobb salad received its name. Both theories involve a man named Robert Cobb, who owned a restaurant called the Hollywood Brown Derby. The story goes that Robert Cobb had not eaten all day, and at midnight he went into his kitchen and used the leftovers he could find and added in some cooked bacon then tossed it with their French salad dressing.
The second theory suggests that Robert Kreis, the executive chef at the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant, created the salad and named it in honor of Robert Cobb. Either way, I sure am grateful the Cobb salad was created!
Religious Symbolism And Medicinal Use
In addition to its usual purpose as an edible leafy vegetable, lettuce has had a number of uses in ancient and . For example, ancient Egyptians thought lettuce to be a symbol of sexual prowess and a promoter of love and childbearing in women. The Romans likewise claimed that it increased sexual potency. In contrast, the ancient Greeks connected the plant with male impotency, and served it during funerals , and British women in the 19th century believed it would cause infertility and sterility.
Lettuce has mild properties it was called “sleepwort” by the because of this attribute, although the cultivated L. sativa has lower levels of the narcotic than its wild cousins. This narcotic effect is a property of two which are found in the white liquid in the stems of lettuce, called or “lettuce opium”. Although the standard definition of lactucarium requires its production from or “”, it was recognized that smaller quantities of lactucarium could be produced in a similar way from and var. elongata, and that lettuce-opium obtained from or was of superior quality.
Romaine lettuce is one of the symbolic items on the plate as a bitter herb.
Is Cobb Salad Healthy
There are so many different diets out there these days it can be hard to characterize something as healthy or unhealthy. It really depends on what kind of lifestyle you have!
But I can say for certain that this recipe is gluten-free, and low carb.
However, with the bacon, blue cheese, avocado, and olive oil in the dressing, it is not necessarily low in fat or calories. Personally, I am on Weight Watchers and this meal will cost me 15 smart points, which is kind of a lot if youre trying to lose weight .
But I have friends that are doing the keto diet, and I know from talking to them that high fat is a GOOD thing with that plan.
So you just need to know your strategy and eat accordingly. If you want more info on the nutritional value of this salad, you can find it in the recipe card below.

Dont Forget The Cheese
Blue cheese is the classic choice in a cobb salad. The soft marbled blue curds have a characteristic aged moldy flavor from the Penicillium roqueforti strain used during manufacturing. You can use similar types of cheese like Roquefort, Stilton, or Gorgonzola. Try feta or goat cheese for a more mild yet tangy taste. Cheddar and Monterey Jack are popular firm options without the strong taste.
Cooks Note Cobb Salad Recipe:
- If you want a creamier dressing to go with this salad, then look no further than this Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing is a delicious choice.
- Most Cobb Salad recipes include chicken, but I decided to mix things up and add leftover ham from Easter. If you dont like ham, feel free to use chicken or turkey instead.
- I like to put a little extra blue cheese into my dressing. If youd rather not just leave it out, it will still taste amazing!
- I love this Cobb Salad recipe because it uses up leftover ham AND Easter eggs. Woot, woot!
- I hate when I use only some of the herbs I bought for a recipe because the rest usually go to waste in the refrigerator. After all, I forgot about them. Theyre so stinkin expensive! What I love about this recipe is that it uses an entire clamshell of chives, and none go to waste!
- I like to pass the dressing with this salad instead of dressing it on the platter. This way, if theres extra, it wont go to waste because its already dressed.

What Is A Cobb Salad
The original Cobb Salad was developed by Bob Cobb in 1937 for his Brown Derby Restaurant in Los Angeles. It has become a famous American dish and is similar to a Chefs Salad. It starts with a bed of green lettuce with rows of ingredients arranged over the top just like we did in our Salmon Cobb Salad, and it is served with a vinaigrette.

Whats In A Cobb Salad
So, what exactly were these leftovers and why is the salad they made so very, very good? Heres what goes into our classic Cobb salad recipe:
- Chicken. Our Cobb salad recipe features crispy, panko-crusted chicken. Because crispy and fried is always better than not crispy and not fried.
- Avocado. I mean, this salad was born in California. Of course it has avocado.
- Bacon! You can pan-fry it or bake it in the oven, just be sure its nice and crisp.
- Blue cheese crumbles. Roquefort is the classic blue cheese for Cobb saladwe love its rich tangy punch and perfect crumble.
- Hard-boiled egg. We like ours with a nice jammy yolk. You can see our instructions for how to make perfect six-minute eggs.
- Dressing. Heres where our Cobb salad recipe differs from the classicand is better! Instead of the classic Brown Derby dressing we think the best dressing for Cobb salad is a creamy, herby, homemade buttermilk ranch.
- Romaine! Not only is it one of the healthiest lettuces out there its sturdy enough to hold up against ALL of the Cobb salad ingredients that we pile onto it.

How To Make A Cobb Salad
Cobb salad has so many ingredients it can be a little overwhelming to know which ones to tackle first! But, as with every dish, there is nothing to worry about as long as you prep everything in advance.
Here is the order I like to start prepping ingredients for Cobb salad:
I actually like to steam my eggs. They are so easy to peel! See recipe for details.
whether you boil or steam, dont forget the ice bath. It stops the cooking process so you dont end up with chalky, overcooked eggs.
If you are baking your bacon, get it in the oven before prepping your veggies.

Be sure to dry your chicken well before cooking, and make sure to space it out in the pan to get good browning.
And for goodness sake, dont forget the avocado.

My body is trying to help me out by making me crave healthier things, so that I dont die young. Thanks, body. Way to self-preserve. You knew I ate way too much Peach Cobbler last week.
How about that summertime comin at us though, right? Are you feeling it? Were feelin it. 106 degrees on Memorial Day, feelin it. Gah! Give us a break, Sacramento! My parents just got back from a trip to Minnesota, where they canoed the boundary waters Anyway they said it was still pretty chilly there. Sometimes I forget that the rest of the country has actual, like, seasons. Ive been wearing shorts for months. Dont hate me.
I hope everyone had a lovely Memorial Day! I learned that Memorial Day is meant specifically to honor fallen soldiers, while Veterans Day is meant to celebrate all those who have served in the military. Did you know? Im embarrassed that I didnt know that!

What Is The Difference Between Cobb And Chef Salad
A cobb salad is typically made with chopped green, tomatoes, bacon, chicken, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, blue cheese and a vinaigrette dressing. A chef salad is a more generic salad made with more generic salad ingredients such as cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, then meats such as ham, bacon and cheddar cheese.
How To Assemble A Cobb Salad
Start by grilling the chicken and corn at the same time . Once theyre both done, let them rest for a few minutes before cutting the chicken into bite-sized pieces and slicing the kernels off the ears of corn.
While you wait for the grilled chicken and corn to cool down, make the dressing by blending the ingredients in a blender. Slowly drizzle in the oil as the blender runs to it can fully incorporate.
Combine the lettuce and veggies in a bowl and drizzle the dressing on top. Toss to coat, then divide the salad veggies into separate bowls. Top each bowl with the chicken, bacon, eggs, chives, and goat cheese, then enjoy!

Can Cobb Salad Be Made Ahead
You can make all the components ahead, and assemble the salad, with the exception of the avocado.
As Im sure you know, avocado tends to turn color pretty quickly after its been sliced into. So I would save that for just before serving, and pour on the dressing at that time too. That way, the lettuce wont wilt.
So definitely let me know what you think of this recipe, and how you feel about savory dishes here on Baking a Moment. I really like sharing them. Its fun for me to have that variety, and I hope youre enjoying it too!

The Best Order For Preparing A Cobb Salad
Cobb salad is a basic chopped salad defined by its combination of cooked chicken breast, blue cheese, hard-cooked eggs, and crisp bacon. If you have leftovers from meal prep say, cooked chicken or eggs you should absolutely use them. If you dont, prepping all the ingredients from scratch wont take long if you prepare them in the following order:
How To Keep The Dressing From Separating
A salad dressing creates an emulsion by mixing two ingredients that dont typically combine and keeping them suspended. Most dressings are semi-permanent emulsions, meaning eventually, they separate over time. Mustard helps to keep a longer suspension and acts as an emulsifying agent. You can also use a small amount of mayonnaise if storing the dressing for longer than a few hours.
