Tuna salad is a staple food for most Americans, eaten both as is, or in a sandwich. In India, not so much. However, this was a regular feature in my house growing up. My mother used to whip up an incredible tuna salad for dinner. So for me, this is what we Indians called ghar ka khana, which means home food. I stole my mothers recipe for this tuna salad, giving it my own spin and twist, and making it fit the keto diet. Just dont tell her.

Is Tuna Salad Keto Or Not

In general, fish can be a great option for a keto diet, especially fattier fish like salmon and tuna. When it comes to whether tuna salad is keto or not, it depends how you make it. The classic tuna salad recipecanned tuna, mayo, veggies, and seasoningsis already pretty keto friendly!

You can maximize the fat content by using real, full-fat mayo, and I personally prefer avocado oil mayo. Keep the veggies low carb, like onion and celery, and explore higher fat additions like pecans!

For this particular low carb tuna salad recipe, the relish and pickle juice may be of concern to some, depending on your individual carb tolerance. You can use sweet relish and pickle juice if you want a more noticeable sweet flavor, or you can keep your tuna salad keto by using a dill relish insteadno sugar to worry about. Youre free to nix the splash of pickle juice as well, but I like the hint of sweetness, and the added sugar is negligible!

Olive Oil Or Avocado Oil Mayo

Keto Tuna Salad | Easy Lunch or Dinner Recipe

Above we did say that you can use avocado oil or olive oil in low carb mayo. The only reason most options above were avocado oil is because its difficult to find a clean olive oil mayo. Most companies are cutting their mayo with cheap oils to lower the cost, hence why avocado oil brands are so expensive.

So, either will be fine its just a matter of finding a brand that isnt cutting their high quality oil with a cheap less expensive option.

Best Keto Tuna Salad Lunch Recipe

This is the Best Keto Tuna Salad Recipe I have ever made! Seriously EVER!

If you have been living the keto lifestyle for even just a few months chances are good youve tried your fair share of Keto Tuna Salad Recipes. I know I have. Last week when I was prepping my husbands lunch, I decided to get creative with mine.

My husband can eat tuna salad a few times a week, and he never complains, but I have a hard time eating it more than twice a month. For some reason after eating it once the thought of having it again makes my stomach churn. The only thing I really cant resist about tuna salad is that its ridiculously easy to make on days when Im strapped for time. Otherwise, I would probably never eat it.

Thankfully, I finally found a solution for myself and managed to increase the fat in my new favorite tuna salad recipe! Some days I still struggle to get all the fat I need without a fat bomb or bulletproof coffee, so this has been a lifesaver.

Remember to get creative in the kitchen because you never know when you may discover your own new favorite recipe!

Ive mentioned this before, but Ill say it again . I hate getting my hands dirty when Im cooking. When I was working as a Pampered Chef consultant we started selling these little can colanders. They are great for straining all cans but I used them for tuna more than anything.

Should You Strain The Oil From Canned Tuna On Keto

I often get the question on whether you should buy the canned tuna thats packed in oil or packed in water, and to be honest, it just depends.

While there is nothing wrong with either tuna packed in oil or tuna packed in water, it boils down to what your preference is and what your goals are.

If you purchase tuna in oil and drain the oil, youll also be saving some calories. If youre following a macro approach where you track calories and macros, it would be almost impossible to give you an accurate measure if youre draining the oil and wondering how much oil is left.

Your best bet is to buy canned tuna packed in water if youre intending to strain it anyway.

Should you strain the oil from canned tuna on keto? Theres no need to strain the oil from canned tuna while following a ketogenic diet. However, if youre looking to save calories, then straining the tuna is the better option, and purchasing canned tuna in water would be the best option.
