Make The Best Croutons
Stovetop croutons are the best croutons for Caesar-salad making. Nothing against store-bought croutons, its just that stovetop croutons made from leftover bread are infinitely more tasty and easily customizable. Plus, they only take about 10 minutes to toast up and dont require heating up the oven. Croutons for Caesar salad can be made up to a few days in advance and stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
Caesar Salad Recipe Ingredients
My Caesar salad recipe starts with 4 basic components:
- Romaine lettuce Chop it into bite-sized pieces thatll mingle with the other ingredients! You dont want any big chunks of romaine here. Butterhead lettuce would be delicious in this recipe as well.
- Cheese I like to scatter shaved pecorino cheese over my Caesar salad, but a generous sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese would add the same nutty, savory flavor.
- Homemade croutons For crunch! These are so yummy and easy to make just toss bread cubes with olive oil and salt, spread them on a baking sheet, and toast them in a 350-degree oven until theyre golden brown.
- Caesar dressing Traditional Caesar salad dressing is made with raw egg yolks, Worcestershire sauce, and anchovies, but my version is much simpler and just as good. In a small bowl, whisk together Greek yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, a minced garlic clove and capers, Dijon mustard, and black pepper. Youll end up with a creamy, rich mixture that tastes every bit as tangy and savory as the classic version.
To make this recipe extra fresh, I add a few unconventional components to the classic Caesar salad template. First, I pile on a generous amount of roasted chickpeas. They add protein to this recipe, along with lots of extra crunch. Finally, shaved red radishes, pine nuts, and a sprinkle of chives take the whole thing over the top.

Can You Make This A Chicken Caesar Salad
You can definitely add chicken to this salad. You can use grilled chicken, baked chicken, skillet seared chicken or rotissierie chicken. Grilled chicken is best, in my opinion.
To make grilled chicken, use 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts, flatten them out to an even thickness with the flat side of a meat mallet, brush both sides lightly with olive oil, season with salt and pepper and a little garlic powder and onion powder.
Grill on preheated medium-high grill for about 4 minutes per side, or until 165 in the center. Let cool about 10 minutes before chopping.
For baked chicken breasts, it will be the same method to prep the chicken, but for baking youll place the chicken on a rimmed baking sheet and bake in preheated 400 degree oven for about 15 20 minutes.
For skillet seared chicken, youll use the same prep method but skip brushing with oil, then cook chicken in 1 Tbsp olive oil over medium-high heat until cooked through, about 5 6 minutes per side.

Think the Caesar Salad was named for ancient Roman leader Julius Caesar? Nope, that’s just a myth many of us just assumed it seems. This famed salad was actually first made in Tijuana, Mexico, in the roaring 20s by an Italian immigrant, Caesar Cardini, who landed there by way of Canada and the U.S.
When Caesar moved to Canada as a teenager, he had already amassed an impressive amount of experience working in European hotels and kitchens. By the time he was in his early 20s, he’d made his way to California and opened his first eatery, Brown’s Restaurant, in Sacramento in 1919. After a stint back in Italy, he returned with some of his brothers, opened a French restaurant in San Diego, and they did what many entrepreneurial folks during the Prohibition era didheaded to Tijuana. There, he opened Caesar’s Palace.

Also important to the Spanish victory was Cortés’s cultural translator, Malinche, a Nahua woman enslaved in the Maya area whom the Spanish acquired as a gift. She quickly learned Spanish and gave strategic advise about how to deal with both indigenous allies and indigenous foes. The unconquered city-state of Tlaxcala allied with the Spanish against their enemies, the Aztecs of Tenochtitlan. The Spanish gained other indigenous allies, who also joined in the war for their own reasons.
