In addition to a lifetime supply of paper towels, 20 pound bags of sugar, and all the discount books you could ever hope for, Costco also carries a decent selection of Jewish and kosher foods. And yet another perhaps unknown fact about the super-store is that co-founder Jeff Brotman, of blessed memory, is Jewish.
We recently perused the aisles of our local Costco location to scout out the most awesome Jewish products.
What we discovered is that you can easily cater your next Kiddush, bris, or synagogue luncheon with all the quintessential Jewish foods they offer. Please note: Each location carries different products based on the region and some of these may not be available where you live.
Smoked salmon/lox: Not only does Costco carry smoked salmon, but they carry several different varieties including their own Kirkland brand and a wild smoked salmon cream cheese spread from the company La Terra Fina. Good thing they also carry bagels!
Smoked whole white fish: You dont need to order whitefish for your next brunch or bris from a caterer or appetizing shopjust head to Costco where they are selling an entire smoked whitefish for less than $20.
Bagels: Selling their own brand of bagels in plain, whole wheat, everything, and cinnamon raisin, you dont need to schlep to the bagel store after all.
Rugelach: Yup, Costco is churning out their own flaky rugelach in raspberry, chocolate, and cinnamon flavors.

Blue Hill Bay Whitefish Salad Recipes
1/4 medium yellow onion, finely chopped |
1/2 whole smoked whitefish |
1 hard-boiled large egg, finely chopped |
3/4 cup mayonnaise |
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice |
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper |
Steps:
- Place the onions in a small bowl and cover with cold water. Let soak for 15 minutes. Drain.
- Meanwhile, using a small knife and your hands, remove the skin, bones, and any brown bits from the whitefish and discard. Flake the whitefish into small pieces into a medium bowl, checking again for any bones.
- Add the egg and onion to the whitefish and mash together with a fork. Stir in the mayonnaise and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Product Review: Bluehill Bay Smoked Whitefish Salad
As I have mentioned in previous posts, I love Sunday brunch food, especially of the Jewish variety. I grew up with lox and the occasional special treat of a whole smoked whitefish at my grandparents house. While I still love whitefish, several years ago, I tasted its cousin in salad form. When I first tasted it, I could not believe how good it was. My only complaint was that the container was small and there wwas not enough! This complaint is certainly not applicable to the whitefish salad at Costco as it is sold in a 32-ounce container!
This whitefish salad is delicious. It has a strong, pure taste of smoked whitefish, without any filler added. It is salty, but not overly so, indicating that the salt is from the whitefish itself, rather than from a salt shaker. The texture is very soft and smooth, with a consistency akin to very finely mashed tuna salad. There are no discernible bones, and only a few dark flecks of skin .
Although very tasty, this whitefish salad has a very strong flavor, so, despite the small portion size, one to two portions is satisfying. It is rich, but will not leave you with a heavy feeling. I find that I like to eat it with a relatively bland or sweet side dish,much as challah, bagel, noodle kugel, or vegetable soufflé.
Although I think I still prefer whitefish in its original variety, this whitefish salad is a special treat as well!
How To Serve:
As a meal: Whether for fancy brunches or casual weekday meals, whitefish salad is a natural fit: serve it on bagels with lettuce, tomato, and red onion, alongside omelets, or roll it into a wrap with cucumber, tomato, carrot, and/or bell pepper.
As an appetizer or hors d’oeuvres: Whitefish salad makes great party fare. Offer it on crackers, toast points, or blini, or alongside a platter of crudités. Or spoon it on cucumber or radish slices, or into halved cherry tomatoes. As a plated appetizer, try it with a salad of fanned avocado slices and supremed grapefruit or orange sections.
