How To Make Caesar Salad

Now, I know caesar dressing can be a bit controversial. Theres so many stances you can take on the subject creamy vs. non-creamy, anchovies or not, and is there seriously supposed to be raw egg in this.

Im actually onboard with all of them . But, I have to say, a caesar vinaigrette with anchovies is by far my favorite.

And, its so easy to make. The secret is anchovy paste. Ok, its not actually a secret, but its quite a time saver and gives you the flavor youre looking for from the anchovies without having to actually chop up those squishy little filets.

This recipe makes enough for 1 really big salad or two average sized ones.

How To Make Honey Mustard Vinaigrette

No one can believe how simple it is to make, too! All you need are a few ingredients that you probably already have on hand ground mustard, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, honey, shallot, garlic, and some salt and pepper.

Just combine into a mason jar with a lid, shake, and serve. If you dont have a mason jar with a lid, you can always give it a good whisk in a bowl. I just love the mason jar because it makes for easy storing in the refrigerator, too.

Is Salad Dressing Gluten Free

Whether salad dressing is gluten free is a confusing topic, because many dressings do contain gluten in additives, while others do not.

When you are at the store, gazing at a bottle of dressing and wondering if it contains gluten, first check the food allergen statement on products to see if it says contains wheat. If there is a statement that says contains wheat, the dressing is not gluten free.

When you look at the ingredient list, check for wheat, rye or barley and ingredients that might contain gluten that are often found in salad dressing. These include:

  • Artificial color

What Makes This Recipe So Good

Every now and then I get an intense craving for a Caesar salad: the crisp romaine, the creamy dressing so rich with umami, the crunchy croutons and creamy, aged parmesan. Ill settle for a bowl almost anywhere!

The trouble strikes when were in the middle of a Whole30 and heavy sweet potatoes and avocados and eggs no longer sound appetizing. I need cool and refreshing and crisp, and a big Caesar salad would fit the bill so perfectly. Except, you know, that aged parmesan. Notexactly Whole30 compliant.

But ever since my vegan days, Ive been working tirelessly at winning substitutions for cheesy flavor and tang in recipes. From my paleo and vegan broccoli cheese soup to my paleo and vegan queso blanco, I simply refuse to let the cheese craving go! Ive experimented with tahini and lemon, nutritional yeast and pimentos. I no longer settle for simple, yet massive, amounts of nutritional yeast, nope. Its gotta be complex and nutty and rich and perfect to hit the blog.

I came up with this Whole30 Caesar dressing by tweaking my beloved Whole30 immersion blender mayo and my favorite Caesar dressing from my pre-paleo days. Easy and flavorful = Whole30 heavyweight.

And when it comes to Whole30 date night? This Whole30 Caesar dressing has you absolutely covered. Pair a bowl of crisp lettuce tossed in this Whole30 Caesar dressing with a seared steak and a steamed sweet potato and wham bam thank you maam. Love is totally in the air.

Creamy and salty with a punch of garlic whats not to love?

Well, the high-fat content for starters. Then the calories per serve can be a bit off-putting as well as the preservatives and artificial ingredients often used in store-bought varieties.

This lighter caesar dressing can be made at home in minutes and stored in your fridge for up to five days.

This is a very simple recipe that uses Greek yoghurt as a base ingredient as opposed to mayonnaise, reducing the fat content compared to a regular caesar dressing. You will need a food processor to create this recipe, although a hand blender will suffice.

Now that you know which salad dressings are generally safe for a gluten-free diet, lets go through the list one more time and see which ones are going to be both gluten AND dairy-free.

  • Italian dressing
  • Mayonnaise or vegan mayonnaise based dressings

If you make your own dressing at home, its possible to still enjoy the other types of dressing, as long as you use dairy-free alternatives or omitting dairy ingredients.

For Caesar salad dressing, youd want to omit the Parmesan cheese in the recipe.

In yogurt or buttermilk dressings, youll want to use dairy-free yogurt or make your own buttermilk using dairy-free milk and lemon juice as an alternative.

For ranch dressings, you can find some brands that are dairy-free, where they dont use any dairy at all. Or you can try your hand at making it at home using my gluten-free dairy-free egg-free ranch dressing recipe.

Now that you know generally which salad dressings are good options for your gluten-free diet, lets go more into what ingredients youll want to avoid in bottled salad dressings.

Substitutes For Anchovies In Caesar Dressing:

You might be wondering what you can substitute for anchovies in Caesar dressing. There are a few solid options!

If you dont want to open a whole can of anchovies, you can buy anchovy paste. Its a little more palatable since you dont have to see the actual anchovies.

Alternately, you can also use fish sauce in place of anchovies. Red Boat brand works really well and its Whole30 compatible!

Another option is Worcestershire sauce, but Ive never found a brand thats Whole30 compatible.

For the vegan chicken pieces you can use whichever ones you prefer. I like Quorn pieces, Oumph!, Dopsu. Or if you dont want the added vegan chicken simply leave it out!

The best vegan pamersan in my opinion is the Violife one. It grates well, slices well and taste really good. If you want those classic parmesan shavings you get in a caesar salad I would go for that one!

Although this salad is super simple to make it does require a bit of cooking for the vegan chicken and homemade croutons. So lets get to preparing it!

Gluten Free And Dairy Free Caesar Salad Dressing Recipe

Believe it or not, Caesar salad was my kids favorite school lunch!

Running out of gluten-free and dairy-free lunch ideas for your kids lunchboxes? This can be a particular challenge when most traditional options revolve around bread and cheese. Of course you can always use gluten-free bread to make the traditional turkey or peanut butter and jelly, but why not think outside the standard lunch box fare and prepare a fresh salad? Children are often big fans of Caesar salad for the creamy dressing, pleasantly non-bitter romaine lettuce and the crunchy croutons. I love to use Easy Lunchboxes since its easy to keep everything separated the croutons would be a bit mushy if I put them on in the morning!

I usually make this dressing with Parmesan cheese but have had a few people request a dairy-free version. I adapted this recipe, which is a fan favorite, by eliminating the cheese and adding the Dijon mustard. In my opinion, its almost identical. My family gave it the double thumbs up! If you want really traditional, you can top it with anchovies .

The recipes below give you an option of that beloved crunch and the creaminess you get from a restaurant Caesar salad without the use of wheat or dairy. I make the dressing with regular mayonnaise, which is made from egg and naturally dairy free, and the croutons I prepare from gluten-free sliced bread or baguette. With a few key ingredients on hand youll be surprised how easy it is to prepare!

What Can I Use Instead Of Anchovies

Homemade Caesar Salad & Dressing Recipe w/ Shrimp, Chicken or Salmon (Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free)

As I mentioned before, the anchovies are what give this caesar dressing that classic caesar flavor, so I dont recommend skipping them! That said, if you just cant get behind anchovies or cant find any there are a few substitutions you could try.

  • Worcestershire sauce: Since Worcestershire sauce is made with anchovies, this is probably your best substitution. This recipe already calls for Worcestershire sauce, but if youre skipping the anchovies I would add 1-2 more teaspoons.
  • Fish sauce: Fish sauce is typically made from fermented anchovies, making it a good substitute for the anchovies in this dressing.
  • Capers: If you need a vegan/vegetarian substitute for anchovies capers would be a good option. Theyre similar to anchovy paste in that theyre soft and oily and have a salty and umami flavor.

Ingredients For This Dairy Free Caesar Dressing

  • Whole30-compatible mayonnaise: By using a store-bought avocado oil mayonnaise, you wont need to worry about the sauce breaking or forming a proper emulsion! The Whole30-compatible brands I use are Primal Kitchen Foods and Chosen Foods. Theres even a vegan Whole30 mayonnaise from Primal Kitchen if youre avoiding eggs. If you want to make your own mayonnaise, heres my homemade mayo recipe.
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Nutritional yeast: I love using these yellow flakes to impart a cheesy flavor to the dressing in place of the parmesan cheese. My favorite brand is Bragg. It will add a yellowish hue to the sauce, though.
  • Dijon mustard: Check the labels to make sure the ingredients are Whole30-compatible .
  • White wine vinegar: I like the combination of fresh lemon juice and vinegar to add the proper tartness to the dressing. You can use red wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar in place of white wine vinegar.
  • Coconut aminos: I use this in place of Worcestershire sauceit adds savoriness and sweetness to the dressing.
  • Red Boat fish sauce or flat anchovy fillets in olive oil or anchovy paste: I know some of you are skeeved out by anchovies, but they add a punch of umami and saltiness thats irreplaceable. That said, you can easily use fish sauce or anchovy paste if you dont have any anchovy fillets in your pantry.
  • Garlic: Even if you love garlic, one small raw garlic is plenty in this dressing.

Who doesnt love a really good Caesar Salad?! Its one of our faves. But the dressing can be a hassle. Raw egg. A can of oily anchovies. Short shelf life. Caesar Salad Dressing Recipe

Dairy

If you have a soy allergy, that whole aisle of salad dressings at the grocery store is annoying. Why must they make so many dressings with soybean oil? And some of them are really annoying because they dont specify which they use, listing something like soybean AND/OR olive oil. I dont know why it took me so long to just make salad dressing myself. I think its my reluctance to make everything that we eat, and not wanting to give up on buying basic things like condiments and salad dressing. But then I realized how easy it is to make your own dressing. Added bonus it tastes so fresh. And theres no icky raw egg.

This Caesar dressing recipe is gluten free, and depending on the mayonnaise you use, can also be soy free, egg free and/or seed free. You could try making it dairy free by omitting the Parmesan cheese. However, you may need to make up for it with additional salt or something else. I havent tried making this dairy free, nor experimented with things like nutritional yeast . If you try to make this dairy free, please leave a comment and let us know how it turns out!

Fresh lemon juice is important to this recipe. You can certainly make it with bottled lemon juice, but the taste wont be as fresh and delicious. If youre avoiding gluten and/or soy, be sure to check the ingredients of your Worcestershire sauce. Last time I checked, Lea & Perrins brand was gluten free and soy free.
