How To Make Oil Free Honey Mustard Dressing

Simple Salad Dressings: Honey Dijon Dressing | Easy Dressing for Side Salad

Like I said, you only need three ingredients to make this oil free salad dressing:

  • Fresh lemon juice
  • Dijon mustard
  • Raw honey

Again, you can swap the honey for pure maple syrup if you like that flavor better, and/or want to keep the dressing vegan. You can also play around with using half Dijon and half yellow mustard if Dijon is a bit too zippy for you.

Combine the ingredients in a bowl then stir it up. Simple! Feel free to add a crack or 20 of black pepper if you like.

I hope you absolutely LOVE this new way to dress a big, fresh salad! Enjoy!

Why Make Your Dressing At Home

Making a low-calorie and healthy salad dressing more imaginative than a little bit of oil and vinegar is not all that easy.

Most published recipes for homemade dressing are high in calories because they contain lots of fat and sugar. While some types of oils are healthy in moderation, overdoing it can be tempting.

Then I thought about my favorite food groupYOGURT.

These Are Very Very Good

Healthy has a bad reputation for meaning bland. Theres no denying that when you strip fat out of salad dressings, you lose a certain element of creaminess on your palette as you munch through a pile of crunchy greens.

But by using a good, thick yogurt in place of mayonnaise and adjusting seasonings to compensate for the loss of fat in the dressings, you can still make very, very good creamy dressings that you can use generously on your salads. I use these dressings far more frequently in day to day life than I do mayonnaise based ones.

Id really love to know what you think if you try any of them! Nagi x

You Need Fat To Absorb The Nutrients From Your Vegetables

Homemade Honey Dijon Dressing

The beta-carotene found in carrots is fat-soluble and so is the lycopene in your tomatoes and so is the zeaxanthin in your kale . This means you must consume it with some fat to get the benefits of these powerful antioxidants. Also, the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K require fat for absorption.

Dont believe me? In a study comparing the absorption of carotenoids from 3 salads with varying amounts of fat , Essentially no absorption of carotenoids was observed when salads with fat-free salad dressing were consumed. And to that I say

Whats the point of eating a tasteless, unsatisfying plate of raw vegetables if youre missing out on the health benefits?

Turns out the salad with the most fat28 gramsresulted in the highest absorption of carotenoids. Thats 2 tablespoons of oil or ~ ½ cup of nuts or ¾ cup of avocado. Were not talking a worthless, decorative light sprinkling here. This is a healthy, flavorful, filling portion of fat.

A similar study looking at salad and tomato salsa concluded, adding avocado fruit can significantly enhance carotenoid absorption from salad and salsa, which is attributed primarily to the lipids present in avocado.

We also use it as a dipping sauce for veggies.

    The Recipe:

    • 1/4 tsp fresh ground black pepper or, to taste
    • Optional: 1 tsp hot sauce

Blend all ingredients till creamy and smooth. Make sure not to blend so long that it gets hot. If too thick, add more water.
