Chef Salad Ingredients & Substitutions

This section explains whats in a chef salad, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below.

  • Lettuce I prefer to use romaine lettuce, but iceberg lettuce or any other greens will work. Chop right before serving.
  • Deli Ham Chop the ham into bite-sized pieces. If you dont eat pork, you can substitute turkey instead.
  • Tomatoes Any small tomatoes, such as cherry or grape tomatoes, work well. Slice these in half. If you only have large ones on hand, you can just chop those up instead.
  • Cucumbers Slice them into quarter moons.
  • Cheese I used a combination of Cheddar and Swiss, but feel free to use any cheeses you like. Authentic chef salad typically has cheese cut into cubes, but if you dont have block cheese on hand, you can use shredded as well.

Try adding sliced or diced avocado, grated carrots, thinly sliced radishes, or chopped celery.

How Long Does It Last

Chef salad can last for 3-5 days, under the condition that it hasnt been tossed with the dressing. Otherwise, its best to finish the salad within the day its made. Chef salad could last in the refrigerator until the following day, but the lettuce would probably get soggy.

Keeping the lettuce fresh and crispy is the key to a delicious prep-ahead salad. To do so, put the vegetables in a bowl, cover them with paper towels to absorb excess water, then seal the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

For A Recipe That Will Use Up Odds And Ends In Your Refrigerator Look No Further Than The Chef Salad

If youre someone who doesnt like to be hampered down by recipes with lots of tedious rules, then a chef salad is for you. Found on restaurant menus everywhere, theres a lot of debate on where this salad came from. Its a recipe you can easily make at home using ingredients from your refrigerator and pantry.

Chef Tips And Tricks:

  • Keep it healthy! Be sure to taste the chopped salad before adding salt. Ingredients for the chopped salad that already have salt include the olives, artichoke hearts, chickpeas and feta cheese. The fresh herbs and acid also add a punch of flavor so additional salt may not be needed.
  • Pitting Kalamata olives can be labor-intensive however they are available pitted. When purchasing pitted Kalamata olives, I treat them as though they still have the pit. I never take for granted that the mechanical pitting process got all the pitsI look each one over by cutting them in half.
  • This Mediterranean Chopped Salad with Chickpeas is also perfect when composed. Place all the ingredients on a platter in rows which allows diners to choose more of the ingredients they love and less of the ingredients they dont.
  • This salad can also be served over lettuce greens!

Whats The Difference Between A Chef Salad And A Cobb Salad

At first glance these two salads may look a bit identical. First of all, both are main dishes, and both have lettuce. A cobb salad is typically made with chopped green, tomatoes, bacon, chicken, hard-boiled eggs, avocado, blue cheese and a vinaigrette dressing. A chef salad is a more generic salad made with more generic salad ingredients such as cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, then meats such as ham, bacon and cheddar cheese.

One of my favorite healthy meals is a Chefs salad. Its so easy to put together and can be tweaked to use whatever ingredients are on hand .

A traditional Chefs salad includes a bed of lettuce topped with meat , cheese, tomato and a hard-boiled egg.

When making a Chefs salad and serving as a main course be sure to include a good portion of protein. A palm-sized piece of chicken sliced into strips is a perfect example.

To make the most healthful salad, focus on veggies and protein, add a sprinkling of cheese and drizzle with vinaigrette.

Adding fresh herbs to the mix is an excellent way to boost flavor.

To build a Chefs salad to serve 4 you will need:

1 ½ pounds of lettuce or mixed greens6-12 ounces meat 2 hard-boiled eggs, sliced

  • Classic American Salad Recipe

Chef Salad is one of the easiest ways, among thousands, to make a hearty meal. You can easily create it with just less than ten ingredients in your fridge.

I personally have the recipe already ingrained in my mind. It is that simple and delicious, that I make it whenever I feel like slacking off but do not want to compromise nutrition.

In addition, you do not have to grill, bake, or cook anything. All you need are the raw ingredients which makes it extremely time-efficient.

Incorporating this in your weekly meals is a great way to make your household healthier. I highly recommend it and I am excited for you to have a taste of my version of this classic favorite.

A Delicious Salad Inspired By Nan

Ive shared a recipe inspired by Nan a while back her family-famous cabbage rolls. Today, though, its a chefs salad recipe.

Chefs salad or chef salad. What do you call this classic green salad? Ive heard it referred to both ways. For me, its the former. Either way, its delicious and quite special to me.

Growing up and going to grade school, I would often visit my nans during lunch-time break. One of the things that she used to make me was a chefs salad and, boy, did I enjoy it.

It was quite a simple chefs salad, like most are, but it was so tasty and definitely made with love. Shed take so much pride in it and always say I washed the lettuce three times.

I remember her making me a big bowl, piled high, and Id drizzle it with bright orange store-bought French dressing. Talk about good.

Its the combination of iceberg lettuce and French dressing, in particular, that makes this chefs salad nans salad.

Funny thing about food, how the memories that it evokes transcends the actual taste of what you are eating. Know what I mean? I mean, yes, chefs salad is yummy. But, to me, its much more than that. One bite of salad and Im transported right back to her table, with nan smiling over at me.

So, this one is for you nan. Love you, miss you.

How To Make Chefs Salad With Egg

  • Start with crunchy greens. We love a combination of green lettuce and spinach for this salad.
  • Hard Boil your eggs. Gently add your eggs to boiling water and boil for 10 minutes for the perfect, creamy yolk thats just a little bit soft but not at all runny. Rinse with cold water to halt the cooking process, peel and slice.
  • Choose your meat. We love a Chefs Salad with bacon, but ham, turkey or chicken breast, or even roast beef works too. Or use a combination of your favourites!
  • Dont forget the veggies. Thinly sliced onions, ripe and juicy cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and creamy avocados are the perfect addition to this salad!
  • The sky is the limit. If youre a cheese-lover, add some cheese to this salad. If you like fresh herbs, add those too.
  • Add your dressing. Whether you like ranch or blue cheese, a creamy dressing is the perfect way to top off this salad!
  • Classic Chef Salad Vs Cobb Salad:

Chef salad and Cobb salad are very similar. They both typically include, meat, cheese, hardboiled eggs, and bacon. We typically base our decision of which salad to make on our current stash of ripe avocados! Cobb salad calls for different meat and cheese, and includes those avocados. Rather than a creamy dressing, you are most likely to find a vinaigrette dressing on your Cobb salad. Really, we love them both!

    What Is A Chef Salad

Most origin stories for this iconic salad take place at various hotels in New York during the early 20th century. Many say this salad started as an off-menu item where the chef would add cuts of deli meat, cheese and hard-boiled egg to the hotels house salad. Over time, as the popularity of the salad grew, it was permanently added to the hotels restaurant menu. Soon after, chef salads began popping up on menus all over New York.

Chef Louis Diat, of the Ritz-Carlton in New York City, is often credited with putting the chef salad on the map after including on the hotels menu in 1975. While he was certainly not the first to make the salad, the Ritz-Carltons fame helped propel the chef salad to the mainstream.

    Recipe Notes And Helpful Tips

    • For best results choose eggs that are as close to expiration as possible for easier peeling. Try steaming the eggs for even more ease in peeling. I have had a lot of success with this method.
    • Purchase good quality deli meats and cheeses.
    • If you dont like swiss cheese try cheddar, bleu cheese or provolone. It is your salad so fix it to your liking.
    • Sun ripened tomatoes always take this salad over the top but in the winter months I use grape tomatoes. They seem to have the most flavor during the cold chilly months.
    • Homemade Croutons are always a huge hit and really bring out the best that the salad has to offer.
    • Do you have a favorite creamy homemade dressing? This salad is great with ranch, bleu cheese, thousand island, and even Creamy Poppy Seed Dressing.

    How To Store It

A lot of people tend to shy away from making salads as they are unsure how to keep it fresh even as leftovers. However, this should not be the case since they are fairly easy to store.

Knowing how to keep lettuce fresh and crispy is the trick in preserving its tastefulness. To do so, I place the vegetable in a bow and drape a paper towel over it to absorb excess moisture. I then seal the bowl with a plastic wrap and the lettuce can last for up to three days.

    Recipe Tips

    • For additional flavor, you can add seasonings such as salt and pepper. Seasoning the greens and not only the dressing makes the taste of the greens and topping come out.
    • Iceberg lettuce has always been a classic favorite. However, you can use romaine lettuce and other greens such as spinach and arugula for a varied flavor.
    • Herbs are also great in getting an additional kick. A dash of oregano, basil, or parsley not only makes it smell fragrant but also taste exquisite.
