Make Ahead: Tuna salad tastes best cold. After making one, let your healthy tuna salad sit in the fridge for at least 30 minutes and you will see what I mean.

Store: Here is the best part tuna salad can be refrigerated for up to 5 days. It is perfect for meal prep school and work lunches, cold summer dinner, weekend easy lunch. I like to make tuna salad in a large Pyrex glass bowl, then just pop a lid on and refrigerate.

Tuna salad has really grown on me. It is not something I ate growing up in Ukraine but tastes evolve!

Add Sweet Pickle Relish

I really like to add sweet picklerelish to my low sodium tuna salad. The one I use is 65 mg sodium pertablespoon, 130 mg total for the entire recipe. Thats almost half the standardrelish and only adds about 32 mg per serving. I find that is enough relish toenhance the taste I am looking for and since I am generally well within mysodium budget I add it in.

You may leave it out if you want a really low sodium 84 mg version. Its all up to your sodium budget and taste. I have listed both nutritional labels with and without pickles.

If you use store bought pickles, compare labels carefully and find the lowest sodium product available. I say carefullybecause I have found the labels, I hate to say deceptive, but not very easy tocompare in serving size and sodium level. One listed a serving size as 2/3 of apickle! Huh?

I am looking forward to trying somechopped avocado in my next batch of tuna salad and leaving the pickles out.

Canned Tuna Without Salt

Tuna, as you may know, lives in naturally salty sea water, which means its flesh will have a greater sodium level than, example, a land-based meat source. The quantity of sodium in salt water fish will simply be greater. To keep sodium consumption to a minimal, use a canned or pouch version that says no salt added.

A few tuna producers have recently released canned tuna that hasnt had any additional salt added for preservation. How much salt do you actually need for canned foods? Simply search for the ones that say no salt added. The popular brand has 52 mg per 3 ounces. Its not terrible.

However, they all seem to be in 4 or 5 oz. cans, and I have yet to see the no salt added version in any of my usual local shops. Its possible that youll have to purchase it online.

Because I couldnt find it in my local shops, I decided to make a simple preparation at home to minimize the salt.

Dramatically Reduce Sodium In Canned Tuna

A study published in the Journal ofthe American Dietetic Association measured the sodium content in tuna afterrinsing. Researchers found that rinsing canned tuna for three minutes removesup to 80 percent of the sodium. When rinsed, instead of getting 270 mg ofsodium from 3 ounces of regular canned-in-water tuna, youll only get around 54milligrams, or 162 mg for the whole can. If you can find and rinse the no saltadded variety, you can reduce the sodium to just 20 mg per 3 ounces.

To rinse the tuna, I use a fine meshstrainer and a bowl that it fits into nicely as shown in the picture. Just letthe water run over to fill up the bowl and lightly spill over. Gently give thetuna a stir a couple times when the bowl is filled with water to loosen up thetuna. It does not need to be blasted with high pressure water!

I let this run and then drain whilecutting up and measuring out the other ingredients. The timing is almostperfect. I was worried that the tuna would stick in the mesh but it didnt atall. Just turn the strainer over and give it a good whack into your mixing bowland you are all set to mix!

  • Pasta tuna salad: Mix with cooked whole wheat macaroni pasta for healthy tuna pasta salad.
  • Avocado: Love avocado? Substitute mayo with mashed avocado.
  • Egg: Add a few chopped hard boiled eggs my fave too!

Sodium In A Tuna Sandwich

The average fast food tuna sandwich contains 1,293 milligrams of sodium. That’s 56 percent of your 2,300-milligram daily limit. Even worse, if you follow a low-sodium diet, it’s 86 percent of the 1,500 milligrams you should limit yourself to each day. Much of the sodium comes from canned tuna, but the mayonnaise, bread, cheese and other toppings contribute as well. A homemade tuna sandwich can contain less sodium, however, because these versions are often much smaller than fast food sandwiches. The average homemade sandwich with 1 ounce of tuna, two slices of bread and a tablespoon of mayonnaise contains about 500 milligrams of sodium. If you add pickles to the tuna salad, the sodium content is increased by about 60 milligrams per pickle slice.

  • Canned tuna: Canned tuna divides into 2 main categories: packed in oil or water. Then pick from based on your budget: Albacore tuna has less fishy taste and white meaty texture or yellowfin/skipjack/light tuna is tan to pink in colour and has more strong fish taste. Lastly, the texture: chunky or whole.

I always buy canned light tuna packed in water as I do not see a need for extra oil as we drain it anyways. Also chunky one vs. whole because its cheaper.

  • Mayo + plain Greek yogurt: The best combination to get that traditional tuna salad taste but with less calories. Use a mayo made with avocado oil and Greek yogurt with at least 2% fat for the tastiest healthy tuna salad results.
  • Dill pickles: Add a briny taste with sweet and sour notes that really make this tuna recipe outstanding.
  • Celery and red onion: Add crunch with bold earthy and sweet taste.
  • Fresh garlic: Because garlic is always a must in any dish, hands down.
  • Lemon juice: Adds tang and brightness.
  • Salt and pepper: To season, adjust as needed.
