Summer Salads From Wendys
I have been focused on eating more salads this summer. Its part of my effort to eat better and incorporate more vegetables into my diet. Recently I teamed up with Wendys to learn about their salads and I was seriously impressed. Its easy to be skeptical of salads from a fast food restaurant, but these salads are made with the same ingredients I use at home: fresh green lettuce, sliced vegetables, cheese, nuts, grilled chicken, and delicious Marzetti salad dressings.
Last week I went to Wendys with my friend Shaheen and we got a behind the scenes look at how Wendys salads are made. The staff at Wendys showed us how they hand wash and hand chop the lettuce, fruits, and vegetables each morning. The salads are actually prepped twice a day, in the morning before lunch, and in the afternoon before dinner. Shaheen and I even learned a better way to wash strawberries they place them in a container with water and lightly shake the container to remove the dirt. It is far more effective than just sticking the container of strawberries under running water, which had been the technique we both used at home.
After some quick training, we got to try our hand at making our own Strawberry Mango Chicken Salads.
First, we put a few handfuls of fresh mixed lettuce in a bowl, and then we added crumbled feta cheese, diced mango, and sliced strawberries.

For some reason I had a strange craving for fast food but since Im trying to eat healthy I ended up compromising with myself and ordered a half sized salad at Wendys. I know youre probably thinking its not going to make that much of a difference to my diet but hey at least I tried right?
Okay I didnt really have high expectations for this salad and Ive never tried their salads before. Ive only had McDonalds salads so Im going to have to compare it to those. First of all the pecans were way too sugary and there werent enough apple slices for me. At most there were 4 chunks. Then the chicken was much too dry and tasteless. Usually grilled chicken is pretty good so I dont know what happened there. I did like the pomagranate dressing that they used but otherwise it was below average for me. Im pretty sure Ive had better salads at McDonalds before. However I thought their half sized portion was pretty good for $4.99 and I wonder how big their full sized salads are? Needless to say, maybe I should stick with items that they do well like burgers.
