How Long Does Homemade Ranch Last

Stored in a well-sealed container in the fridge your buttermilk ranch dressing should keep for up to two weeks. Help it stay fresh by not dipping anything directly into the container that youre storing it infor example, a half-bitten carrot. Instead, when you want to use a little ranch, pour out just what you need. This way, you arent introducing any bacteria into the batch.

How To Make Ranch Dressing

Sometimes making the things you love at home from scratch can be a bit intimidating, but I promise that this ranch dressing recipe is worth the minimal effort. It’s healthier , more budget-friendly, and quick and easy to whip up in a flash.

In fact, here’s how straightforward it is:

  • Whisk together the mayo, sour cream, and buttermilk.
  • Blend in the herbs, flavorings, and spices.
  • See? Couldn’t be any simpler.

However, there is one final, very important step that does require a bit of planning ahead and/or patience:

Refrigerate your ranch dressing for four hours to let the flavors come together.

I promise, Homemade Ranch Dressing just won’t taste good until you allow it to chill.

And if, in the process, it thickens too much, you can always stir in a little extra buttermilk before serving to thin it back out.

The Best Homemade Ranch Salad Dressing | Healthy Ingredients | Rockin Robin Cooks

Buttermilk is one of those ingredients that most people don’t keep in their fridge. But I do feel like it’s an integral part of this recipe, as it gives ranch dressing its slightly tangy taste. The good news is that you can easily make your own buttermilk!

Making buttermilk is as easy as using 1 tablespoon of acid for every cup of milk.

    So for this recipe:

  • Add 1 ½ teaspoons of lemon juice to a 1-cup measuring cup.
  • Fill the rest of the way to the half-cup mark with whole milk and stir to combine.
  • Let the mixture sit for five to ten minutes, stir, and it will have thickened and curdled, turning into buttermilk!

    Does Ranch Dressing Have Mayo

Yes. Mayonnaise plays a significant part in creating that distinctive ranch flavor, and it also lends body to the dressing. Lighter options like yogurt are delicious, but yogurt wont give the same smooth texture and full body. Homemade ranch dressing is one of the only reasons I keep a jar of mayonnaise in the refrigerator.

Under ordinary circumstances, Im not mayos biggest cheerleader. Ive made half a dozen potato salads, and none of them with mayo I usually prefer lighter yogurt or vinegar-based dressings.

Even so, there are still places for rich mayonnaise in the kitchen, and classic ranch dressing is one of them.

    • Dried Herbs – this recipe calls for dried dill and dried chives as they will store for far longer than fresh herbs. If you only plan to make enough spice mix to use right away, you can definitely substitute fresh dill, fresh chives or even fresh parsley.
    • Garlic Salt – if you dont have garlic salt, you can substitute a combination of 1 tablespoon dried parsley, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon salt.
    • Onion Powder – this adds a sweet onion flavor without any moisture.
    • Black Pepper – if possible, grind your own as the flavor is much stronger.

    Whats In Ranch Dressing

An often asked question is, Why is Ranch dressing bad for you? Well, when you make Ranch homemade from scratch, the processed mystery ingredients in bottled dressing and spice packets go out the window, making this version not so bad after all.

Heres whats in this homemade Ranch dressing:

    • mayonnaise
    • cayenne pepper
    • kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

This dressing gets its tang from the combo of mayo, sour cream and buttermilk. I use full-fat ingredients, but if you want to create your own lower calorie versions, you can simply sub low-fat mayo, sour cream or give Greek yogurt a try. Buttermilk is naturally low-fat so youre in the clear there.

Fresh herbs are essential here, but I do like to use dried dill in this recipe for its more concentrated flavor. If you dont have fresh herbs, go for dried, a much better option than skipping altogether.

The recognizable taste of ranch comes from the nugget of garlic and dried onion in the dressing. I pretty much always prefer pressing my garlic, but if you dont have a garlic press, simply mash the garlic in 1/8 teaspoon of salt to create a paste then add to the rest of the ingredients. Dont be swayed to add more garlic where it can become overpowering.

It is Ah-mazing! You can whip it up in no time flat and enjoy it immediately or put it in the fridge and let the flavors bloom.

    Homemade Ranch Dressing Ingredients

I truly believe that the perfect balance of complementary ingredients in this ranch recipe is what makes it SO gosh darn good.

    • Mayonnaise. Now I’m going to sound like my good buddy Ina for a minute here and recommend that you use “good quality.” While the flavor of the mayo certainly fades into the background after a suitable chilling time, you still want to enjoy those hints of its underlying flavor.
    • Sour cream. Depending on how decadent you’re feeling, you can use regular, low-fat, or fat-free.
    • Buttermilk. Regular milk will work, of course. But I think buttermilk adds a nice undertone of tang, not to mention creaminess ! And no worries if you don’t have any buttermilk on hand! Simply scroll down a bit for instructions on how to make your own.
    • Parsley and dill. Fresh herbs contribute such lovely flavor and color to this dressing if you have ’em. But if you don’t, no worries…you can substitute the amount of dried herbs instead.
    • Apple cider vinegar and Worcestershire sauce. Don’t leave these ingredients out, because just a tiny amount of each contributes to the delicious flavor of this dressing.
    • Garlic powder and onion powder. While I looooove fresh garlic, I feel like it would overpower this recipe. So using powders instead is the perfect compromise.
    • Salt and freshly-ground black pepper. In particular, don’t skimp on the salt…it’s what makes all of the other flavors in the dressing pop.
