Ive been eating tuna salad as long as I can remember. Grandma made it, Mom made it and now Im hooked and I turn to it for lunch time and time again.
Canned tuna will forever be one of those things I just truly appreciate. Its easy to store, its inexpensive and it always perfect for quick recipes.
Of course canned tuna is pretty bland as is but when you add some tart fresh lemon, rich and creamy mayo, and some fresh herbs it becomes something thats even fit for a fast dinner.
And who doesnt love those little bits of veggies dotted through for textural contrast? Its just simple food at its best!

Im strictly a mayo kind of gal, but if you prefer Miracle Whip or light mayo, go for it. Ive never tried it with yogurt, but Greek yogurt might work, especially if you add a little lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
To toast or not, its up to you, if you’re turning this into a sandwich. Sometimes, Im in a toasty mood and crave a little crunch, and sometimes I just want the comfort of soft bread.
No bread in the house? My better half always prefers tuna salad on saltines, but you could make some of these biscuits or homemade soda bread.

You might think you dont need a recipe for a tuna salad, especially an easy tuna salad, but I really wanted to share this one with you. Its healthy, delicious, extremely quick, and looks quite impressive, dont you think?
I know what youre thinking. Who needs a recipe for a tuna fish salad?
Well, I guess youre right you dont. But one of my favourite types of recipes to post are those that hardly need a recipe.
Because if youre like me its sometimes IDEAS you need. What to have for dinner when youve got precisely zero time to shop that day and a maximum half hour to get the meal on the table.
Mr. Scrummy and I have been having this easy tuna salad for dinner regularly for a couple of years now. We started off having it on warm summer evenings, but now its in our regular meal rotation all year round.
And in fact Mr. Scrummy says hed be quite happy to eat this meal every single night!
Im not sure how long it would take for him to get bored of it if he did do that, but it really is VERY GOOD. And trust me, its the simplest thing. As long as you have a can of tuna fish in your pantry, you can make it with salad ingredients that youve probably got in your fridge most of the time.

- For a bit of extra flavor, you can add 1 to 2 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish to the recipe.
- I like a bit of green in my salad, so I finely chop the leaves at the top of the celery stalk and mix them in as well. You could also add finely chopped parsley or some of your favorite herbs like dill or chives.

You could do something similar with a tortilla, too. Just place cheese in the center, top with tuna salad, fold it like a burrito, and grill it to seal it. But theres more! Make a wrap with pita or flatbread and add some greens and sliced tomatoes or cucumbers.
You could also serve this as a true salad on top of greens with some extra vegetables to round it out.
Tuna salad makes a simple mid-afternoon snack when paired with crackers or spread onto celery sticks. You can also take the virtuous route and top your greens with a scoop of tuna salad for a healthy lunch.
What Can You Add Into Tuna Salad
Adding things into your tuna salad can really make it delicious. Here are some ideas of how I like to jazz up my tuna salad:
- I love adding nuts into my tuna salad recipe. My husband prefers almonds, while I love cashews.
- I also ALWAYS have to add chopped pickles. If you dont have pickles to chop up, we also love to add in relish as well.

Sometimes you just want a really good old-school tuna salad. This is my go-to recipe. I start by draining the tuna really, really well so its not watery this is important! then I add a generous scoop of mayonnaise and lots of seasoning. From there, I stir in a spoonful of pickle relish for tangy sweetness, celery for crunch, and scallions for onion flavor. Finally, I add a squeeze of lemon juice and fresh parsley to brighten it all up.

How Do I Make Classic Tuna Salad Lighter
To make classic tuna salad light swap out the mayonnaise with a ripened avocado. The creamy texture of the avocado is similar to mayonnaise without all the calories.

The best kind of tuna for tuna salad is tuna packed in water, not oil. You dont want extra oil in your tuna salad.
Look for cans of wild tuna that are labeled, pole and line caught to be sure that other species werent harmed when the tuna was caught. My favorite tuna is Whole Foods 365 Everyday Value brand Skipjack Wild Tuna in water, which is labeled as pole and line caught one at a time. Not only is this tuna responsibly caught, the tuna tastes like its higher quality and it seems like you get more tuna per 5 ounce can than other brands. I also love that the only ingredients are skipjack tuna and water.
