Egg Salad Is A Good Source Of Protein

Recipe: Diabetes-Friendly Spinach Salad | WebMD

Eggs are a good source of protein. One large egg has 6 grams of protein. Thatâs more than what you would get from eating one chicken breast, which has 4 grams of protein. The problem is, that eggs are high in cholesterol and fat. Cholesterol and fat can be bad for people with diabetes because they can raise blood sugar levels too much. So if you have diabetes, you should choose foods that are lower in cholesterol and fat to eat on a regular basis. Egg salad is an excellent choice for lunch or dinner because it contains only about 3 grams of fat per serving, which is less than the amount found in one chicken breast.

Egg Salad Contains Sugar

Egg salad also contains sugar, which is not good for people with diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends that you keep your added sugar intake to less than 25 grams a day. If you have diabetes, itâs important to limit your sugar intake because high levels of blood sugar can cause complications from the disease. This includes problems like nerve damage and kidney disease.

Can I Make My Own Salad Dressings

You can make your own sugar-free salad dressing at home if you want to try it out. One good mix is lemon juice and olive oil. This is super basic, but it goes with just about any salad.

You could also try a Greek yogurt dressing, with some herbs and minced garlic, or a balsamic vinegar dressing, which is once again basic, but very tasty and perfect for a wide range of different salads and sides that need an extra kick of flavor.

Picking Out An Avocado

Mediterranean Salad

Avocados take several days to ripen. Most avocados you find at the grocery store will not be ripe yet. Typically, people buy an avocado a few days before they plan to eat it.

An unripe avocado will have a solid green color, a few shades darker than a cucumber. When an avocado is ripe, it turns a deeper, almost black, shade of green.

Turn an avocado around in your hand before you buy it to check for any bruises or mushy spots. If the avocado feels really squishy, it might be overripe. An unripe avocado feels hard, like an apple. Leave it on the kitchen counter for a few days until it softens. You should be able to squeeze it like a tomato to test the ripeness.

Diabetic Salad Recipes

Avocados are low in carbohydrates, which means they have little effect on blood sugar levels. A recent study published in Nutrition Journal evaluated the effects of adding half an avocado to the standard lunch of healthy, overweight people. They discovered that avocados do not significantly impact blood sugar levels.

Part of what makes avocados a good choice for people with diabetes is that, although they are low in carbs, they are high in fiber. Many other high-fiber foods may still spike blood sugar levels.

How Much Carbohydrates Are Diabetics Permitted To Consume Each Day

On average, individuals with diabetes should try to consume around half of their calories from carbohydrates. That indicates that if you regularly consume roughly 1,800 calories per day to maintain a healthy weight, carbohydrates may account for about 800 to 900 calories. At 4 calories per gram, it equates to around 200225 carbohydrate grams per day.

Follow The Below Directions

  • Wash lettuce, cucumber, and broccoli well with water, then chop them.
  • Place the chopped vegetables in a large, deep bowl and mix well.
  • Mix the dressing ingredients well, then add them to the vegetables and stir well.
  • Patients with diabetes type 2 should include fruits and vegetables in their diet because they have a high content of fiber. Fiber helps reduce the level of blood sugar and lipid, hinders sugar absorption, and gives the feeling of fullness for a long period of time.

Beyond blood sugar control, research demonstrates omega 3 intake may improve some of the many cardiac issues that people with diabetes face. For example, an increase in omega 3 intake was associated with improvements in vascular function and arterial stiffness, which can reduce your risk of a cardiac event.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a similar study, citing the protective benefits of omega 3 fats on vascular function.

A study of over 5000 nurses found higher fatty fish intake to be associated with lower cardiovascular risk and mortality among women with type 2 diabetes.

Similar results were found when it came to fish intake and heart failure those who ate the most fatty fish has the lowest risk for heart failure.

In adults with prediabetes, higher fish consumption has also been shown to improve LDL and total cholesterol levels. Optimal fish intake was between 18 g to 93 g per day.

As common sense may tell you, and science shows, baked or broiled tuna is better for your cardiac function, whereas fried fish may worsen cardiac markers and contribute to the development of heart disease.

Omega 3 fats are also thought to ameliorate some of the kidney and vision complications common to patients with diabetes.

One recent study noted that increased omega 3 intake helped preserve kidney function in 50% of patients studied. Of the 350 patients studied, 36% saw an improvement in glomerular filtration rate

It also seems to help improve glucose metabolism and reduce fatty liver in the obese.

Lettuce is rich in antioxidants, which are useful in protecting against oxidative damage. This is great because when you have type 2 diabetes, increased production of free radicals causing oxidative damage can occur.

    Finding Out I Have Diabetes

About two and a half months ago, I visited my family physician for my yearly physical. When I returned to get my results after completing a series of tests, my doctor looked at my file and said, I dont have great news for you you have type 2 diabetes.

The news took a couple of minutes to sink in. Although a bit shocked, I cant say it surprised me that much. Ive spent the better part of the past 48 years eating whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. I never worked too hard at taking care of myself. My body was bound to turn on me at some point.

When I told my parents, my mom reminded me, almost apologetically, that we have diabetes in the family. I told her that given my track record with food, I cant put all the blame on my genes. No I own this.
