Healthy Mediterranean Tuna Salad Recipe

Unlike classic tuna salad, this one has a bit of a Mediterranean flare. First, we ditch heavy mayo in favor of a healthier alternative, my zesty Dijon dressing with lime juice and Early Harvest extra virgin olive oil.

What all goes into this tuna salad? Loads of crunchy vegetables–cucumbers, celery, radish, and onions. Then, for a big extra fresh punch, I use a good amount of fresh parsley and mint. I like to throw in a handful of pitted Kalmata olives for a bit of a Greek twist.

Between the zesty dressing the fresh herbs and the peppery bite from radish and green onions, this tuna salad is one big flavor party in a bowl!

Commercial Vegan Mayonnaise Options

View What Can You Substitute For Mayonnaise In Tuna Salad ...

There are plenty of great vegan mayo options in grocery and specialty food stores. Here are a few great brands to try:

  • 1 cup canola or vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS

ADD the egg to a food processor and process for 20 seconds.

Add vinegar, mustard, and salt and process for an additional 20 seconds.

SLOWLY add the oil a few drops at a time until 1/4 of the oil has been added. When you notice the mayo start to thicken increase the oil to a thin stream but continue to add it slowly.

TASTE and adjust seasonings accordingly .

You can store your homemade mayonnaise in the fridge for up to a week, but do not freeze as the mixture will split.

NOTE: If the mayo comes out runny, slowly add oil in a thin stream while mixing with the stick blender to thicken. If the mayo is too thick you can stir in a little water with a spoon about a tablespoon at a time.

    Ingredients To Make Tuna Salad

    • Tuna: I like to use white albacore as it has a great chunky and firm texture that doesnt disappear when you mix it with the other ingredients
    • Celery: Celery adds a wonderful crunchy texture as well as a hit of freshness.
    • Red onions: I prefer to use red onion in salads as it is much milder than white. Mince it finely so that its not overpowering.
    • Greek yogurt: I use Greek yogurt rather than mayonnaise, to make this wonderfully creamy. Greek yogurt is also a great source of protein and probiotics.
    • Lemon juice: Use freshly squeezed lemon juice for a wonderful zingy taste that cuts through the yogurt.
    • Dijon mustard: Mustard adds some tang and spice and works so well with the other ingredients.
    • Salt and pepper: To help bring out all of the other flavors.
    • Parsley: Fresh parsley really lifts this dish and makes it light and fresh tasting. You can use other fresh herbs like cilantro or dill.

    Is Tuna Salad Healthy

Tuna on its own can be a wonderful healthy protein option. It is also nutrition rich, containing B-6, B12, vitamin A, iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium and omega-3 fatty acids.

Which kind of tuna to choose? There are a couple of kinds out there, white albacore and chunk light. I mostly turn to responsibly caught Albacore, it’s higher in heart-healthy omega-3 fats.

And then there is the choice between tuna packed in either olive oil or water. If you’re concerned about the fat content, your best bet will be tuna packed in water. I’ve used both in the past, but I do prefer to add my own extra virgin olive oil, that way I can use an olive oil I love , and I can also control the amount.

Mercury levels in tuna can be a health concern, which is why my family consumes tuna no more than once every two weeks.
