Taylor emphasizes that you shouldnt try to manage the disease with food alone. Crohns isnt something you can cure with diet you need to have a health care team treating this, she says. But if youre having a flare-up, these are some foods you might want to avoid.

1. Whole grains

The high amounts of fiber in foods like whole-grain bread, whole-wheat pasta, popcorn and bran can cause a lot of traffic through the gastrointestinal tract. That can be irritating to someone experiencing a disease flare, Taylor says.

2. Beans

Beans are a wonderfully nutritious food when youre feeling good, Taylor says. But during a flare, their high fiber content and tendency to cause gas is a lose-lose.

3. High-fiber fruits and vegetables

Some people think they cant eat vegetables with Crohns, and thats not true, Taylor says. But you do have to be careful during a flare. Aim for cooked veggies rather than raw to avoid irritating your gut. And avoid fruits and vegetables with skins and seeds intact.

Many people find that bananas or canned pears are gentler than an apple or bowl of raspberries, for instance. Also steer clear of gassy veggies like broccoli, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. Theyre high in fiber and gas-producing kind of a double whammy, Taylor says.

    Excess inflammation in the gut leads to symptoms of a Crohns flare-up. Most doctors will recommend eating a diet called a low-residue diet, which focuses on foods that limit the amount of solid waste in a persons stool.

    Following a low-residue diet is the equivalent of helping the bowel to rest and recover because the intestinal tract does not have to work as hard to digest foods.

    This diet is recommended only during periods of inflammation. It is a low-fiber approach that does not usually benefit a person with Crohns when they are not experiencing a flare-up.


    Beverages that a person can enjoy when experiencing a Crohns flare-up include:

    • decaffeinated drinks, such as decaffeinated tea or coffee
    • low-sugar rehydration drinks
    • water

    Caffeine can be stimulating to the bowels and worsen diarrhea. If a person typically consumes caffeine in a day, they may wish to try switching some of their usual caffeinated products to decaffeinated ones. This may help them to reduce their caffeine consumption with a lower risk of experiencing withdrawal symptoms.

    Breads and starches

    Low-fiber bread and cereal options will stimulate the bowels the least. Examples of these foods include:

    • breads made with white, refined, or all-purpose flour
    • refined cereals , such as grits or puffed rice
    • white rice

    As a general rule, if a food has more than 2 grams of fiber per serving, it is not a good option on a flare-up diet.

    Dairy products

    When I met my wife who is a vegetarian, I expressed how much I loved the salad, but was upset that it caused me so many gastrointestinal problems.     For people with Crohns disease, the fat in foods like fried chicken, french fries, heavy sauces, and creams is often not fully absorbed in the small intestine. However, fat should only be restricted if youre experiencing fatty stools.

    My wife a few weeks ago brought home a product from the supermarket called, butter lettuce. Of course, I have not heard of this before. We looked at the ingredient statement, and the fiber content was much less.

    I decided to give it a try. I loved it. I was hoping that my body would not react to it. I decided to wait a few days to see how my stomach would act. My stomach did great! Now, I did not eat a lot of the salad, I would say: a half of a serving.

    But remember, slow and steady wins the race! I had to keep that in mind because I started to crave salads.

    I am still trying to find that Happy Medium. Last week I believed I ate too much of the butter lettuce, causing me some issues.
